games that every one hate's but you don't hate.

I have a ton of nostalgia for Castlevania 2.. The combat and the level design is nowhere close to castlevania 1's, but i really like exploring the world and progressing through it. I feel like most of it makes sense without a walkthrough, its mostly the crystal shenanigans that would stump someone without a guide.

Thirded, use the retranslation mod and the only reason it is not the best of the NES trilogy is because Dracula's Curse exists

What the rushed story lacks it's made by an unique Metroidvania-like exploration and a Real Time battle system i loved to death

Kingdom hearts chain of memories, both versions. Sure, it's not the best Kingdom Hearts game, but it's far from the worst. I liked the idea of using cards strategically to win battles and to create different versions of a world.

I remember screwattack put it on the top 10 worst mario games

Many didnt know its very much still got the mario dna, it was made by some of the same people that made mario bors (the arcade game), and it was based on a concept Miyamoto and Tanabe had for a sequel to smb

Another misconceprtion is that mario 2 jap was left there because it was too hard, no one who worked for nintendo of america at the time ever said this

Might have already said this, but i think mario 2 aka mario usa is second only to mario 3 on the nes for how good it is, not sure why anyone would call it bad.

Also 100% agree about sonic cd being the best of the classic games.

Rengoku: The Tower of Purgatory (PSP)

A must for Souls fans and eccentric Japanese game development. High weirdness quotient with a strong "liminal spaces" aura––also super fun. Panned upon release and then neglected, but finally getting positive attention on YouTube:

I have a few.

Bart's Nightmare
SMB 2: The Lost Levels
Zelda II: Adventure of Link
Starfox Adventures

When I first played Mario 2: Lost Levels on Super Nintendo, I wasn't mad or upset. I was challenged and had a fun time with it. Now, every Mario rom hacker has created Mario Kaizo levels which makes the Japanese Mario 2 a walk in a park.

I have a weird soft spot for Virtual Hydlide. It’s a horribly flawed game that’s ugly as sin and runs like ass but it gives me strange warm feelings whenever I play it. Also in some ways it’s super impressive for its era. A giant action RPG in a full 3D world with a procedurally generated map and dungeon layouts. You can even enter a custom world seed of your choice.

In a modern context… Imagine if Skyrim or Breath of the Wild generated a unique world map every time you started a fresh game? It’s a fantastic idea but the technology of the time (not to mention the capabilities of the platform) just wasn’t up to the task.

Fun fact: Did you know that Virtual Hydlide uses an engine originally intended for making golf games? It really helps to explain why that game looks the way it does. Pebble Beach Golf Links and Virtual Hydlide run on the same tech.

Billons of worlds, That's a "Billion" with a "B", as in "Bullshit!"

Sorry, couldn't resist quoting the Nerd

You are totally making me want to play virtual hydlide

I've got two: Drakkhen and Ancient Magic, both for SNES.

I saw someone mention Virtual Hydlide, and I assume this is a similar case of fitting certain specific tastes while completely ignoring others. The atmosphere is constantly overbearing, the calm music being interrupted by ruthless random encounters, and yet it's simple enough to keep you wanting to explore. And we can explore the mysterious world where dragons live alongside humans like no other SNES game has allowed us to before. I think this was the first open world game on a console. Let me know if you know for sure!

ancientMagic_r.png

Is it another RPG? Is it really basic on a system that already has lots? Of course, because you just want that straightforwardness sometimes! Some say there's not much to like in this, but to me there's nothing to dislike. The plot really stands out too, easily being stronger than FF4's and even resembling modern games. Some might recognize the game's composers, Miyoko Kobayashi and Masanori Hikichi, from Terranigma, and the tunes here are about infinitely listenable as well.

Digimon World 4, a lot of people hate it cuz it's not the typical "world" game people used to but i don't care this game slaps, and the gameplay is good and I like the dungeon crawling aspect of it, the music characters and aesthetic of this game is unmatched i will forever love this game no matter what

Very nice topic! I have a penchant for "hated" games as, most of the time, I love quirky and flawed yet engaging ones. I played a lot of them but just a few spring to mind right now.

  • P.N.03: I was never a fan of tank controls in action-adventure games, but I often ended out overlooking them if games really managed to grab my attention. Here, the use of such a control method seems really odd and quirky, like most of the elements of the game. Yet, I really got addicted to it back then. Getting used to the awkward control became a challenge itself and, after a while using the z-button for 180° or quick 90° turn became second nature. The music was fantastic, I loved the minimalistic graphic design and mecha design, plus the main character had such great charisma in just design and movements alone even if she spoke just a few (even if important) lines of dialogue.
  • Disaster: Day of Crisis: I've seen if often memed and spoofed, even at the time, due to a lot awkward game design choices and writing. I remember it was absolutely hated in a game forum I often read years ago. Yet, its blend of genres and b-movie feel really charmed me, so much that I ended up completing it in every mode or unlocking everything that was possible. It seemed like an 80 action movie, with all their over the top antics, action sequences and one-liners mixed with a disaster movie. It had A LOT of questionable choices in terms of gameplay but I couldn't help playing and replaying it. So good!
  • MadWorld: I remember getting it at a shop together with Metroid: Other M, both at 9.99. I didn't see much of coverage of Madworld at the time so I basically got it for the artstyle at first. Then, when starting to play it, I really got into the narration style and gameplay, with the combination of wacky moves and hyper gory outcomes, outlandish designs and gritty atmosphere. It seems like an 80 OVA in underground comic book form. I've often see it hated due to the graphical style in black and white, that induced eye strain for some and made things difficult to navigate for other, or the gameplay noted as too repetitive or too awkwardly reliant on the wiimote. I just had a blast playing it, I just have to find a good "wii to hdmi" adapter to have fun with it again.

This guy really spoke to me
Although he's wrong about crash 3 (the best one)

Its funny how the internet consensus changes because Screwattack and AVGN praised it as the best one now its one of the worst while 2 was always beloved and stayed beloved, weird isnt it?

I actually used to not like 2 because of how linear it is but then came to apreciate it as its own entry
In fact nowdays I really like when a series has games that are distinct from one another, like Silent Hill 1-4 and Final Fantasy pre-13, or the ps2 metal gear solid or devil may cry
Sometimes Im in the mood to play dmc1 sometimes 3, sometimes Im in the mood to play mgs2 sometimes 1
They invoke different feelings, they play differently, they got their own

I've always said it, a game can be linear and be great, it's only bad when the game itself doesn't live up to the standard.

Chaos Legion is a blast. A game doesn't have to be perfect to be fun. CL is a prime example.
My only issue with CL is that they made it waaaaay grindier in terms of XP and such when bringing it to the west. It is a very solid game but man oh man when you go from the JP to the western version it is night and day!

Dragon Quest Infinity Strash

The game is an adaptation of a Dragon Quest manga, and players expected a RPG or at least an Action RPG.

It turned out to be some kind of Souls like game where you only fight bosses, with a roguelike mode which allowed you to farm equipement which you could use to beat said bosses way more easily.

It was pretty expensive for what it is but I loved it.

7 saga was so meh to me it felt like a slow RPG to me. i mean i beat the first boss under leveled.
its not unusual to get to the end of a game at a low level. i was talking to a friend one day and i found out that i got to safer sephiroth 15 levels lower than i was supposed to be. level 50 to the recommended lv 65.

PN03 and Madworld are unpopular?? Platinum is definetly not ashamed of Madworld they even reference it in bayonetta! Pn03 always looked at the very least decent I should try it

When I heard about the game, I was hype, being a turtle fan (even though I don't like PG'games that much) and didn't look at any trailers or info.

When I started playing the game, it was... weird. Instead of going though the stages, you were in an open world / arena doing missions that would pop up, before fightint a huge boss.

That's when I realized that was a multiplayer oriented game. Most people seem to not have realized that for some reason and hated it. Because, yeah, as a solo game it sucks really really bad, but with 3 other players who know what they are doing ? Oh boy, probably the best TMNT game I ever played. It is highly designed for multiplayers, most missions rely on good teamwork (which was absolute fire with 3 players and a headset), and defeating ennemies and especially bosses would drop ressources to upgrade your scrolls (basically the equipement for this game). In that regard it felt like Monster Hunter since you need some specific boss' drops to upgrade the scrolls you wanted.
We would spend hours farming bosses and trying out different builds.

It's really a shame that it was so hard to find players because you could only join a team before they started a mission, you couldn't join during it, which made it way too hard to find 3 players (you would have to wait with a room opened doing nothing but waiting for 3 people to join, which didn't happen that often...).

the game still had its issues, mostly due to the fact that the game was obviously rushed, but I'm still frustrated today because a Monster Hunter like TMNT game was such a good concept.

Also, bring Anarchy Reign on modern consoles.

I didn’t play this but I played the one before it. In 2014. That one was definitely mediocre.
Agree on anarchy reign.

I think my picks would be:
Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance: i think is overhated, and the music while not amazing is passable

Sonic CD: I've seen some mixed opinions around, mostly that is not a good sonic game (like for example from Scott the Woz) but i think is pretty fun.

Sonic Riders Zero Gravity : I've have a lot of nostalgia about this game, then i saw i was mostly a lot inferior than Sonic Riders, but to be honest when i replayed it, i think i still prefer Zero Gravity.
