Extremely Weird And Obscure Games

My answer to any question starts with a spectral force game… there’s quite a bit of great IF games on J-PS2, some got English psp ports, they’re really rough but run better emulated.

Ah, but did you know that they also released this one on the PS2?

That's right, the exclusive demo for
METAL GEAR SOLID 2
SONS OF LIBERTY

Steambot Chronicles
This needs highlighting: The Japanese knew the game as Poncotsu Roman Daikatsugeki Bumpy Trot.

Say it out loud. It's lovely.

Around here at the time, the demo was the main reason people bought ZoE, and once MGS2 came out proper, ZoE could be had pretty cheaply in the used bins almost immediately.

That's the joke, really. There was a very brief period of time where the excitement over MGS2 was so great, people bought a completely different game just to be able to play a demo of it. Konami/Kojima definitely knew what they were doing.

It's a piece of PS2 trivia that's a bit lost to time. Obscura for sure; you just had to be there.

Same thing happened with Tobal No.1 and the FFVII demo a couple years prior, too.

And I thought ZOE was the only one. The more you know.

There's gotta be a list of these reverse-parasitic games. Like, games sold on the merits of their bonus materials, and not the game itself.

Square specifically did it with other titles as well at the time. FFVIII demo with Brave Fencer Musashi, Xenogears with Parasite Even, and I think Vagrant Story had... like Chocobo Racing or something? It's been 30 years so it's all fuzzy.

I'm seeing many games in this thread that I never heard of but they never reached the USA so that's made them even more obscure than they may have been in Japan.

YES! Had it not been for CD Romance, some years back, I would've never known of this!

Shotgun Copman for PC is a 2D platformer where you cannot jump, only move using shotgun blasts, trying to arrest Satan. A very peculiar game, It doesn't really make sense.

I dont know what I originally said in this thread, its almost 50 pages long, but in case I didnt say it the first time, Operation Darkness, the really cool but janky WW2 tactical rpg with vampires, witches and historical figures from Success (the Cotton guys).. for real, you can get Frankenstein to punch a Tiger tank to death, or Jack the Ripper to mess up a dozen ubersoldatens... and this is from the mid xbox360 days

Funny thing is I literally just found out about this game (I wasn't paying attention to new releases in the 360 days). Too bad it's stuck on the 360.

oh man its good.. I bought it for like 15 bux just cuz it was from Success and I was shocked to see one of their games on the 360.. spent the next month playing and learning everything about it and had a blast.. its like the ultra janky precursor to Valkyria Chronicles.... with vampires, witches etc.. edit- mines still digitally stuck on my 360, but you can "find" it if you can emulate 360

I just scrolled through all 49 pages just to remember what weird game it was I posted but it turns out it was actually a thread talking about the steam release of Milano's Odd Job Collection. I kind of hate it when shit get's merged around here.

Anyway instead of just complaining I guess I'll contribute too.
