I’ve been playing Pudding: Lyre Knight recently, and I guess that could count. At first, it looks like a good old Touhou inspired shmup, but you can’t actually shoot anything. You have the “lyre shield,” which reflects enemy bullets but also hurts you when you use it. Your companion, Cygnus, hates it.
Instead, she’d much rather you get in her “Happiness Ring,” which protects from all attacks but also fills up a very suspicious heart-shaped bar on the left.
While there is a big bad boss in this game, it seems almost incidental compared to the menace of your cute companion here. I’ve seen two endings so far, and the most disturbing one comes from listening to Cygnus and finishing the game inside the Happiness Ring.
Definitely a game you can’t judge by its cover; it creates an impressive amount of narrative depth out of what looks like a simple gimmick-based shmup and a cute waifu.
