DOOM THREAD

I like DOOM 3, i know its different but it's still a decent game. The Dark Ages is awesome, i don't get the hate at all.
I personally see Doom 3 as a separate franchise. The only things it shares with Doom is the name.

As for the Dark Ages I'm simply not fan of the parry system, that you have less air movements than 2016/Eternal and that they're overdoing with cutscenes when Doom isn't about story.

I could also argue that the price is too high.

Yeah the price is high but i bought it on fanatical for 58 so i didn't pay full price. I think the game feels more classic and similar to the old doom games aside from the parry system and i love that it's not eternal part 2. I love that this doom trilogy consists of 3 completely different games because AAA games are mostly the game style, big open world generic games.

I'll be honest, seeing how The Dark Ages is seen as inferior to 2016 and Eternal I would rather wait until it is at <= 40.00...

On the other hand I got a bajilion of good Megawads to try for classic Doom on DSDA, I have Legacy of Rust and the Doom 64 bonus map pack linking this game to 2016 (and to an extent Dark Ages).

Doom (or at least Doom I) was intended to be as much of a horror game as it was intended to be an action game.

Doom III focuses more on the horror while Nu-Doom focuses more on the action, in that sense, you can say both reimaginings of Doom have as much yet as little to do with the original vision.

Intended or not the ultimate product is still a fast paced game.

Even PSX Doom which was slower and more horror focused still felt more dynamic than the cheap jumpscare corridor simulator that Doom 3 was...

Doom 2016 is also the actual sequel to Doom I/II/64 whereas Doom 3 was a reboot.

Doom PSX soundtrack or the original PC soundtrack? Personally I prefer the PSX version over the PC version. To be fair it was the first version I played so I don't know if that makes a difference at all but yeah I'm curious to know who prefers what...

I know it's a bit of a sin (hah!) to say this, but I never liked the original DOS soundtrack. It feels weirdly out of place for what's happening on screen, and I think that it distracts from the action rather than enhancing it.

Yeah I find the PSX soundtrack a lot more immersive and changes the feel of the game. I have music turned off in GZDoom anyway. Would LOVE to be able to play it with the PSX soundtrack over it instead.

I've never listened to the PS1 rendition so I'll get to you in an hour or so.
Better off playing it mate to get the feel for it.

Alrighty then.

Whenever i run Hexen on Steam, i play it with the N64 music mod. I just prefer that version because it sounds more epic to me.

Both versions have Iconic OSTs but the PC (MS-DOS) version is the Original even though it is composed of Yamaha YM3812 aka SoundBlaster but it doesn't sound bad despite the limitations of the sound chip, but the PS1 version feels more ambient and dark, but it's good too.

The original games just lean more into power fantasy then horror imo.
That is a good observation, actually.

You are pretty tough, pretty fast and able to pack a ridiculous punch, so I can see where you are coming from with that. At the same time, however, I feel that the multiplayer effectively works against that on every version, making it so you don't have the ability to tank much damage or even battle for too long before you are added to some other dude's frag count.

Hell, most people I knew favored rocket jumps and suicidal runs because of this. Could be its own debate, honestly.

That's a fair point too. The player's very much a glass cannon, with most of the demon's having fairly low damage attacks compared to the player to compensate for this. Once you move over to deathmatching, you really start to feel the Glass in Glass cannon however.

It's not *all* power fantasy in single player either, in all fairness. Certain maps lean more into a feeling of horror or vulnerability. Doom 1's "Halls of the Damned" and Plutonia's "Hunted" both come to mind.

Uh... there's no "one Doom PC soundtrack". The fact that Doom used MIDI for the music meant that what people heard with one sound card was insanely different from what other people heard on a different sound card. ::cirnoshrug

Just sayin'.
