Did you have an MP3 Player?

I bought a Sony Walkman MP3 player like 5 years ago collecting dust. Part of why is it requiring priority software to put music on it and I left windows behind awhile ago and don't think Sony even really updated their software for it. Thinking about getting a new one recently that I can copy and paste music onto for playing in the car. I currently use my phone and play what I have in amazon music or bandcamp with nothing downloaded so when I travel through amish country I sometimes completely lose my connection and music. Granted I would be looking into one with blue tooth/wifi built in or speakers since my main use case for one would be while driving. Maybe also while mowing the grass like what I used my old Sony Walkman for.
how old is it...? the one i posted (nw-a45) is from 2017, so like 8 years old. i can drag and drop songs onto that just fine via micro SD

Think I have a whole other issue with my old Walkman. It's only 16gbs :p

Serious: In the 90s, as a kid with limited means, I had one of these cheap junk players. It did what it needed to do, and honestly, for what it was, it was sufficient. It was around $15-20, and of course, the knockoff Apple earbuds sounded like listening to music through an empty soda can... barely recognizable, but it was mine.

Malkavian (Insane): Oh, I endured the tin can symphony for three miserable months before upgrading. Like waiting for the perfect moment to toss that junk into the fire. But hey, at least it gave me a taste of true sound... distorted, broken, and useless. Cheers to survival and better headphones.

16 GBs are still nice for MP3s.

On the other hand is this really necessary to have .ogg or .wav for earbuds?
idk why ur comparing .OGG to .WAV
.OGG (Vorbis) is a lossy file and .WAV is lossless

comparing OGG to MP3 is a much better example
.OGG is way better than MP3 in terms of quality to size comparison when compressed. the only reason MP3 is still widely used now is because everything is compatible with it.

the difference in file size between OGG and WAV is INSANE, we're talking like 40mb on OGG to 400mb on WAV

also yes it is necessary. if you have good earbuds (IEM/In Ear Monitors) and good ears (like me), MP3 files do NOT cut it. the higher the quality and clarity of the audio, the nicer it looks and feels to me

I know it's popular nowadays to spit on Apple (rightfully) but we can still agree that the original iPods were quite class.

And I miss that glossiness they got back then.

PS: To stay relevant on the subject it belonged to my father but I could use a bit of it.
I did have the white iPad nano, but I gave it to my wife many years ago when I got fed up with iTunes.

I remember going to school as an 11-12yo with one of those mp3s that looked like a usb stick. could only contain like 50 or 60 songs but I remember it being more than enough for what I listened to back then

Even just fifty songs feel sufficient nowadays. I don't think I could even name twenty-five songs I truly love anymore. My tastes have shifted, or perhaps my connection to music has changed over time. Sometimes less is more when it comes to what really matters.

I mean, I get your point, and decades ago people in an entire lifetime probably couldn't listen to even 1/10th of the music we can easily access since internet became commonplace. But then again, I'd probably ended up getting so burned if I only listened to the same songs forever, although there's still some stuff from my teenage years that I never grow tired of

Yeah I had a few of them and it was awesome. All these pictures make me think about how this stuff was less standardized and more companies were making these products. It's fun too see all their strange shapes and UIs with some unknown brand name on the front from God knows where lol.

It's kinda fun that this also used to happen with point and shoot cameras back then. Any random company was releasing them, and also as marketing gifts and such

Growing up I had these two, I never joined the iPod bandwagon back in the day. ::cirnoshrug

yeah born in the late 90s we had that most of us then haha, even if the idea is nostalgic and cute I find it nice that we can stream most stuff these days without that

i much prefer owning my music tbh. streaming has got me annoyed as hell now lol

I had an iPod Touch. I jailbroke it so I could play GBA games on it, and eventually it just kinda died after several years of use. Now I have a Samsung Galaxy which I deliberately keep the phone part turned off and mainly use as an MP3 player, an eBook reader, web browser and video player, and a rotating collection of cheap burners I use as actual phones because holy crap, Straighttalk, I do not want to hear about what sports team is being thrashed, how close we are to nuclear Fifth Indo-Pakistani War or the latest in a string of annoying group texts from my roommates when I'm listening to motherfucking Death Grips.

I have been anti Apple most of my life and never bought an Apple product until like 2 years ago I bought an Apple TV to try out games on Apple Arcade. Ended up getting bored with it and giving it to a friend. But I couldn't remember what my first MP3 player was just the vague shape of it until you just posted a picture of it! The SanDisk! Think after that I got a phone that I loaded up with mp3s.

I used to listen to spotify on my phone but then I started looking to cut subscriptions out of my life and Spotify decided to raise their price when I was looking for any reason to drop someone. I still stream through Amazon music and Bandcamp but only stuff I have purchased and have downloaded onto my PC, just need to get a new MP3 player to play my music while driving instead of streaming through my phone. Will have to make sure whatever one I do end up getting supports FLACC since that's the format I download my bandcamp songs in while Amazon is still mp3.

I remember my cousin got a hot pink one when I was little and I thought she was super cool and mature and grown up just because of that lol, I think I was like 8 and she would have been 11-12

I still have my old pink one that my Godmother gave me.
It scratched up to hell somewhere.
I would use it when the power got cut off to help me sleep as a kid.

I still keep backups of the music I like on SD cards, just in case I lose power or if the song I like listening to becomes lost media, I have a backup. That has happened before to a couple of covers I like, so now I make backups just in case.

I also want to note that I got this cool speaker from my work that can run on a Micro SD, so no Bluetooth devices are needed, which is neat.

I use my phone for music, but play it off the MP3 files on the go. Never understood Spotify.
