Honestly, I have a love/hate thing with these sprites.

Haha I do too! XIII sprites are great, but I much prefer Garou style sprites. I have to say I think a part of it is that they did slightly change the designs for XIII, Terry is a bit too bulky, and jeans a bit flarey, I wasn't massively in love with this design.

The KoF '94 Re Bout and NGBC sprites are weird like with SFII HD/Hyper SFII TFC... I always felt like these were from MUGEN or flash fangame...

Yes! I never thought of it like that, they do look like they're from a flash game. You've managed to make me dislike them even more lol.

I couldn't stomach the street fighter HD "sprites" at all, and they were terribly animated.

Yes! I never thought of it like that, they do look like they're from a flash game. You've managed to make me dislike them even more lol.

I couldn't stomach the street fighter HD "sprites" at all, and they were terribly animated.

Garou and SFIII worked because they got smooth animations.

They thought it was a good idea to upscale without taking into account that the original choppy were made because of technical limitations.

Then they went a bit too smoothly in SFV while Guilty Gear Xrd got the lesson better.

Side note but on the topic of guilty gear, I always thought Chipp got less and less badass with each game. Look at his PS1 design!

I also think the sprite work in under night is fantastic / well animated. It obviously takes a leaf out of GGX's book.

Chipp looks younger and thinner now...

And yes, high resolution aliased sprites (which almost look 3D there) will always look better than the weirdly blurry ones from.

The infinitely looping animation at the bottom is superb! Took me a while to give Darkstalkers a proper chance due to focusing on alpha 3 and guilty gear X for years. But it's such a good fighting game and gorgeous too

I'll post a bunch more of these as I make them, since as far as I know no one made animated GIFs from the ripped sprites from Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax (or I just couldn't find them on the net). On a side note, French Bread as always is the top dog when it comes to modern 2d pixel sprites.

Lost Ruins doesn't get mentioned enough! Can't see your attachment btw! But I remember some mild funniness with the sprites.

Iconoclasts was a blast from what I remember although I've forgotten most of the story. I did like the ending too.

Although I have been really into Irem's scifi horror-inspired sprite background and enemy design lately.

In the hunt if I'm not mistaken? I never actually got to the end of it before but this looks great. Nowadays 2d games hardly have this more mature/darker/horror tone. Are there any others you'd suggest.

I really love Irem's Ninja Spirit. It's a bit old now but fantastic, slightly mature tone ninja style game. Pretty neat for 1988

Also without it, shinobi non grata wouldn't exist

Also love Irem for Undercover Cops.... It's so gritty looking you can almost feel the dust flying everywhere
