Beautiful sprite art

Lost Ruins doesn't get mentioned enough! Can't see your attachment btw! But I remember some mild funniness with the sprites.

Iconoclasts was a blast from what I remember although I've forgotten most of the story. I did like the ending too.
Birdman twist at the end
Yeah, my internet shit itself for the last 3 days apparently
there you go

I loved the original Shantae on GBC too

Great game too

In the hunt if I'm not mistaken? I never actually got to the end of it before but this looks great. Nowadays 2d games hardly have this more mature/darker/horror tone. Are there any others you'd suggest.

I really love Irem's Ninja Spirit. It's a bit old now but fantastic, slightly mature tone ninja style game. Pretty neat for 1988

Also without it, shinobi non grata wouldn't exist

Also love Irem for Undercover Cops.... It's so gritty looking you can almost feel the dust flying everywhere

Yes the bottom game is In The Hunt, I think one of the levels before the last. As for games with this type of scifi horror spin, I can think of R-Type, Baraduke, and Lifeforce.

As for more horror stuff, Splatterhouse is a pretty obvious one. Night Slashers is also a pretty good one, that one's got more of a slasher B-movie vibe, but it's still good looking for a DECO game.

And I agree, Irem is pretty good at the grungier style than other devs.

SOS!!! I have fond memories of this but never managed to beat it. What a great soundtrack too. Great use of mode 7.
OG Clock Tower - 👍
Scooby on Megadrive/genesis great game like a Lucas arts game. I played and beat one of the chapters years ago.
All great picks

SOS has rather haunting visuals, even though the game isn't strictly horror. For a disaster game, I'd say it's a 10/10 for being dead serious. Clock Tower is extremely haunting in its beautiful pixel art, but then it's also an actual horror game this time.

I liked The Firemen, they're good devs.

This boss legit scared me back then.

Aeshi Nero's sprite there doesn't give it justice though, it's merely the tip of the iceberg

It's actually a much more massive machine.

The Sonic Advance sprites are very expressive!

Despite the small screen of the console it's indeed a good expressive sprite.

Strangely, I always felt like Modern Sonic from the Adventure/Advance/Sonic X era had a different style from what we saw from Unleashed onwards despite being fundamentally the same character. I'm also not that fan of Classic post-Gens because he doesn't feel like an actual evolution from the one from Sonic Jam.

I watched a video of all critical attacks and GBA FE were quite great looking.

Probably the Pokemon series. Gen 3 has gorgeous sprites and the Gen 4/5 style is amazing as well, but I have a soft spot for the Gen 1 and 2 sprites because they're the only ones I can personally even come close to replicating despite not caring for the watercolor art and janky 90s aesthetic.

Edit: I tried to insert some sprites and screencaps but it didn't look too hot.
