Reminder that Persona 3, 4 and 5 are one to two decades old, as much as people love those games, it isn't healthy that atlus ever since persona 4 arena has just been putting all the attention on those 3 entries, focusing the last 20 years of persona on to re-releases, remakes, ports, improved versions, spin-offs and different types of adaptations, all for just these 3 games, in this last example the only one being well received and well made was the 20 or so episode persona 4 anime (which it's sequel based on p4 golden never got dubbed), it shows that even well before the sega buyout, atlus didn't actually try to move on from these entries, and as much as i like the spin offs like dancing all night, and also specific versions like p4 golden on vita or p3 portable on psp, it just isn't good for a series spanning three decades to not only not acknowledge it's past and most of the time ignore it (being the last time p1 and p2 received attention were 15 years ago and the p2 japan exclusive version that never got localized on ps1 also didn't get localized when given a second chance on psp)
As much as ff7 external material gets crapped on or not being generally liked aside from crisis core and as much as they ruined cloud's character after the original ff7, square enix at least even before ff7 has tried to experiment with the series, giving other entries additional material while also not just focusing only on the popular ff's like the ones were nomura had the most contributions (you know, the ff's of which the characters appear in Kingdom Hearts), all the while releasing new entries and different spin offs, all of varying quality, yes, but all with different stories and main characters.
Persona just isn't a series where you could milk the same games forever because much like ff7 mentioned above, it gets to a point where it gets tiryng, even worse since unlike ff in which some entries had follow ups or spin off stories (not to mention crossovers like dissidia), persona at most in the last 20 years has had two versions for two games that actually expand the story, one mode in a prior game that also tried to expand the story only to being liked by no one and be left in the dust until the remake of p3 came out (paid dlc btw), a fighting game that never came to pc, three dancing spin offs, two of which don't have a story and the one who has it it's an 11 hour rhythm game story mode that is a sequel to persona 4, a musou based on persona 5, a few crossovers with other franchises and two spin offs locked to the 3ds, one of which was also one of the very lasts important 3ds releases.
I know persona is an extension of smt, but 1: persona got actually more popular than smt with each passing entry
And 2: at most with other smt series you would get a re-release, sequel or improved version like devil summoner: soul hackers or the ds smt, meanwhile the persona part of the brand, not even all of it, gets the most attention, it has gone to the point where kingdom hearts iv, a game that was announced almost half a decade ago and hasn't received any significant news since, has a more likely chance to drop than a persona 6, not to mention GTA VI, we are more likely to have that live action show be made than a new setting or characters in a game that isn't locked to asian mobile users, all while the stories of p3, p4 and p5 have round up and been finished for years, in essence: it's the modern dragon ball effect.
Btw, isn't it weird that a niche series like sly cooper got a better treatment in just 12 years, than persona on it's last 20 years, you can dislike the 4th sly game story as much as you want, but at least the sly series on it's 12 year run knew how to tell a story, continue it and finish it, even with the unnecessary 4th game at the end, all the while getting all the kind of privileges a popular series like persona has had just in it's original run, not to mention there was a huge gap between 3 and 4, and while it was bad story wise, the gameplay in 4 was easily the best in the series, all the while resembling the trilogy but in a next gen style, that and the cooper gang didn't show up for unnecessary, corporate or boring crossovers, they just showed up awhile back in some questionable playstation crossover games, appeared in R&C rift apart, had a few re-releases on ps3, ps4, ps5 and ps vita, an animated short, two separate manga, and a cancelled movie that actually got a trailer back in 2014, and that was it, in the end, ignoring the 4th game's story, it's best to end your series on a high note if it's a continuous story, or if it's self-contained, try not to milk the material with as much non-canon fluff as possible, because if there's drought, there's also pollution
