Why do people still use Kega Fusion for emulating Sega Genesis games?

I may be one of the fossils Clippy outed himself as, and I never use it. It sounds pretty bad in comparison to the easy alternatives like BlastEm or Genesis Plus GX, and I think that's already an excellent reason to drop it. IIRC even on Windows 10, it had problems going full screen till you fiddled with compatibility settings.

I also barely play any SEGA games so that helps.
It's actually got basically 100% functionality of all genesis games, the problem with it is mainly with the sega cd, it's 32x support is still one of the best.
That and the compatibility issue it has in windows 11 because of it's age, though that can be fixed.

Yes it's not as dominant as it used to be, but it's proof of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", it just works.

We've used it forever and it works. I won't stop using it until it stops working, basically. The last time I changed an emulator it was probably when I moved to Duckstation, and that's because it was just so blatantly better than the previous PSX emulators in every way that it couldn't be denied. Better compatibility, more options, no plugins to fiddle with, just the obvious definitive Playstation 1 emulator. Every console should have one like it.

I figure its the same reason people like me still occasionally go back to ZSNES. It was one of the first to get it right, and it's held up over these years. Fusion is ten times more accurate to its system than ZSNES is to SNES though. Just kinda similar with how they have fancy guis and they've been around forever. And like some others have stated. Once you get used to one program it's hard to switch unless there is a really good reason to.

ZSNES is probably more about the GUI, there's no other reason to go back to zsnes but it's gui is completely unique in comparison to others.

As i said kega fusion just works and has near 100% compatibility, so there's no reason for alot of people to jump from familiarity especially if they don't care about the sega cd support, which is the biggest problem it would have for most people, especially since both ares and retroarch have usability problems for alot of us, some of us dislike blast em for various reasons, same with picodrive.

What's wrong with the Sega CD support anyway? It's worked fine with every Sega CD game I've ever thrown at it. You just have to turn on the Perfect Synchro option (some games freeze without it).

Audio can desync, i never experienced it personally but it apparently can happen especially in FMV games.

Every time someone uses Kega Fusion. Just use, https://github.com/jsgroth/jgenesis/releases/tag/v0.10.1

I can't stop

BTW, for anybody searching for an alternative, I highly recommend Ares (https://ares-emu.net). It's both actively developed and open-source.
for MONTHS my dad has been asking me to find a way for him to play Loadstar again because he never beat it. every emulator i tried would not work or just would not play this one game specifically but THIS one? ....thank you for this ::weirdasshands

Ares is a cycle accurate emulator, that means it's as close as possible to a original genesis in functionality, if you run into something like that again look into cycle accurate emulators.
Ares has a issue with filters for alot of people but if you want one that just works, ares is one of the best.

I bet people would remember BlastEm if they ever put out a new release.
Picodrive would also probably have a better rep if they didn't require you to compile from source for a non libreto version.

I still keep Fusion around because I have always just preferred dedicated single-platform emulators with comfortably fully-featured UIs, and no one had made a good enough standalone version of GenesisPlus GX, BlastEm or any other more accurate solo emulator that fits that bill, at least that I have been able to find.

I am absolutely loathe to use RetroArch, that UI is just so fiddly, convoluted and user-hostile that it makes me hostile towards using it in return.

I know, but hear me out. Many people were still using PCSX2 1.6 till they started putting out new stable builds last year. That was some 6 years out of date. They really should.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

To be fair i used the nightlies for pcsx2 and had problems with them on occasion so for most people if it works why change it.
Same reason fusion is like that.

I think we can come to conclusion and finally cut the shit. Some like the the nostalgia of the emulator or the look, some like new fancy things, etc. We can finally end the argument once & for all. I'll agree if it ain't broke, don't fix it attitude, because I'm sure that specific emulator has a special place in everyone's heart.

Fusion is like that because it isn't developed any more. There is something to fix. Just hear the sound on another Mega Drive emulator and you know strides have been made since Fusion.
The point i was making is fusion works, if it works and every game you care about works on it, why change it?
I upgraded...kinda, because i switched to linux, but overall there's no real reason for most people to use any other emulator for genesis emulation if it's still working, heck i have a specific butter knife that i've had for 35 years, is dull as hell and has obvious knicks in it, but it is uniquely designed, fits my hand perfectly and just works great at what i use it for, my sister and i live together to pool resources and she has bought probably over 100 sets of knives but even she'll sometimes use it.

Familiarity is worth more than gold for some.

Every emulator (and every version of them) has it's pros and cons.

Just use what fits your situation.

There is no nearly definitive modern emulator for Sega Genesis and it's addons, like for example Duckstation for PS1 (and it has some bugs left too).

I used Kega Fusion, and was the best in it's time, now if I want something that it cannot give me, there's Genesis Plus GX (but it doesn't have 32x and it's own GUI) and the new contender Jgenesis.

If I had any problems with Kega (and they're few), it would probably have to be trying to run the games in full screen

I still remember Sega was porting their games to Steam and they ran absolutely terrible (and this was pre- Genesis Classics release) and Kega was a life-saver for me when I was just getting back into playing the Genesis
