Why do people enjoy horror games?

For me it’s the atmosphere and often the story. Especially older titles or games that try to emulate the look of them I find gorgeous , something about realistic graphics that don’t scratch my brain in the same way, like if I wanted to see scenery like that I’d go outside go on a walk, or watch a horror movie.

Often horror media is able to touch upon themes others can’t, somehow making a safe space to tackle things like that . For me it’s the fact I’m put in the drivers seat, I’m the one that has to make the decision for whether my character or those they care about dies, and how the game is able to warp the player’s perspective of that, making them feel completely helpless.

Well it's the most thrilling I can get. I'm too scared to do thrill rides or rollercoasters but I can work up the nerve for a horror game I get rewarded for my bravery even if I know hundreds of others have experienced it I join in their ranks than just be a watcher for some channel. But I do admit my favorite series is probably seen as an easy horror game I enjoy that control is pulled away from me so I get to enjoy an interactive horror movie at my pace for as long as I want until I turn the next page.

I like the set and setting of horror games. Personally, i feel like a lot of atmospheric horror games put a lot of thought into the games environment and setting than regular games.

I'm against the jumpscares in games only if its done right. Cry of Fear is a great example, it adds to the tension and is done in a way that builds up.

Also, I like watching people die in different ways. Much like watching slasher films (Manhunt is a good example but it does get tedious after a while).

After a long hard day at work all I want to do is play a game where you're weak and helpless and there's constant anxiety from being chased around by terrifying monsters.

I too wondered why? Why you watch or play horror? Until I decided to download a game called silent hill 1 that game changed me forever you are talking about lasting effects to this day my hair had few white hairs there and there but after playing silent hill 1 it became much more noticeable.

It made me feel human and alive! Yes it really did make me feel so alive like fighting for my very own existence or virtual existence.....the radio signals followed by whatever sounds monsters makeI my eyes wide open pressing on R1 and ready to shoot the living heck out of anything that comes near the cryptic riddles that are always written in blood which makes me ask "who's blood is this?" The genuinely disturbing scenes that can be quite shocking.

Overall I play horror games to get scared it also explores some narratives that other genres usually don't do after playing silent hill 1 I became better at dealing with horror still lickers terrify me with their human like sounds.....

One thing I should note is playing horror games with someone else reduces the scare factor for me I like to play alone and in solitude usually prefer empty room and especially at night headphones also help the horror experience and most importantly don't consume to much horror games at once you will devleop a big time resilience against getting scared which can ruin the whole experience so consume it in a formulated manner 1 horror game once in a while although for me I don't think anything can scare me more than silent hill 1 made me sleep on the couch just to keep an eye on the room door to make no romper jumps me , and made me keep the light on for one night never had done that before , made me hallucinate hearing the radio signals when I was in the bathroom didn't even dare to look myself in the mirror and even doubted to exit the bathroom for moment , one time I was in a building to take a class the hall was quite dark something made a sound I stared into darkness and the sound was heard again and again I ended up drawing my pencil prepared to fight whatever was making that sound luckily the teacher came in pretty fast so it was just matter of seconds.

Overall how can I not want to experience such a experience again? Its awesome and I mean it never had a game do me like that silent hill 1 made me realize my mind was making up a lot of fears by itself man I cant wait to try silent hill 2 see if it has the same effects or more? Time will tell....

Any of y'all ever play Penumbra: Black Plague? It was made by Frictional Games (of Amnesia fame). I remember playing that game with a bunch of my friends huddled around the computer and getting so freaked out and paranoid trying not to get caught by the monster.

I love the style and feel of low poly horror but I'm bad at survival games.
Just don't think you are super man and try to kill everything that moves I know it can make you anxious or scared to move in a place where there is enemies but you gotta deal with it.....I got too cocky in the hospital in silent hill 1 ended up wasting my shotgun ammo , I tried to fight dogs (hellhounds I call them) at the school entrance wasted all my pistol ammo and had to melee my way through most of the school and I hate being so close to grey children...

That’s tha spirit!

I like the tension that comes with a good horror game. The atmosphere and art design that darker games have also tends to drag me in even if I never set out to look for a scary experience in the first place. I also think you can do more interesting things with horror or similar genres from a story point of view since you get to go crazy with how horrible your villains are, it makes it more satisfying when the protagonist manages to escape/beat the bad guy

I only like horror games when it's mixed in with the action genre like Dead Space or Resident Evil 4. I don't really care for horror games with average joe protagonists and limited resources.

I mean that's what makes horror horror? You can't shoot everything? The sort of game that has every bullet matter.

If you like games like dead space I think system shock 2 is good for you.

Basically I like the excitement that even though my character is strong my opponents are horrific creatures that are stronger or could outnumber me at any moment. Maybe both! I've been curious about System Shock thanks for the recommendation.
