Why do people enjoy horror games?

For me it’s the atmosphere and often the story. Especially older titles or games that try to emulate the look of them I find gorgeous , something about realistic graphics that don’t scratch my brain in the same way, like if I wanted to see scenery like that I’d go outside go on a walk, or watch a horror movie.

Often horror media is able to touch upon themes others can’t, somehow making a safe space to tackle things like that . For me it’s the fact I’m put in the drivers seat, I’m the one that has to make the decision for whether my character or those they care about dies, and how the game is able to warp the player’s perspective of that, making them feel completely helpless.

Thanks for the share also I'm sorry for constantly misspelling "the", stupid virtual keyboard is uncomfortably laid out.

Well it's the most thrilling I can get. I'm too scared to do thrill rides or rollercoasters but I can work up the nerve for a horror game I get rewarded for my bravery even if I know hundreds of others have experienced it I join in their ranks than just be a watcher for some channel. But I do admit my favorite series is probably seen as an easy horror game I enjoy that control is pulled away from me so I get to enjoy an interactive horror movie at my pace for as long as I want until I turn the next page.

I like the set and setting of horror games. Personally, i feel like a lot of atmospheric horror games put a lot of thought into the games environment and setting than regular games.

I'm against the jumpscares in games only if its done right. Cry of Fear is a great example, it adds to the tension and is done in a way that builds up.

Also, I like watching people die in different ways. Much like watching slasher films (Manhunt is a good example but it does get tedious after a while).

After a long hard day at work all I want to do is play a game where you're weak and helpless and there's constant anxiety from being chased around by terrifying monsters.
