Who Deserves a Spot

@Nebulon_Galaxy makes a good point. It is the highest grossing in terms of raw sales, that is a good measure of "iconic"

People KNOW Tetris, even if they never played it, i think it has more popularity than Mickey Mouse and probably in-line with pac-man and mario
Completely agree and it surprised me how the number of raw sales back that up O_o

Sorry all, but I can't help but be obsessed by numbers >_< I think they are fun ^_^

So it looks like pac-man should earn a spot for gross money, but street fighter II put up some crazy revenue as well for a single game O_o

Hm... I wonder if mario should be replaced with pikachu ::thinking

Now I wonder if sonic even deserves to be up there... sorry sonic >_< ::huhsonic

Now seriously, honestly i would put R.O.B, he only had two near-shovelware games you were literally better playing with another person, but let's be real, he was the Trojan Horse gaming needed to save gaming in the USA

I'd say Adol Christine from the Ys series. The original Ys was one of the major inspirations for the first Final Fantasy, and we wouldn't have the jRPG genre without it.

In terms of how strongly of a gaming icon then probably either Pikachu or Solid Snake. Pikachu since how hugely well known it is and/or Solid Snake to represent an icon for games for more adult audiences and shooter/action games (and also that period in the late 90s/early 00s where those kinda games started gaining more traction and prominence)

Well no, JRPGs existed before Ys. Dragon Slayer also from Falcom is actually considered the first Action RPG. And even further back, Dragon and the Princess on PC-88 which released a year after the first Wizardry but a year before Wizardry got Japan releases. It’s technically the first true JRPG. On top of that, it’s clear that Wizardry (and possibly Ultima) had more of an impact on both Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, so if anything created the JRPG genre, it was the former. Many mechanics from Wizardry are still staples in modern RPGs and as much as I love Ys, it did not have that kind of motion. The stuff Wizardry pioneered in games included buffs, debuffs, a party limit (though a limit of 4 was normalized by Gauntlet, but Wizardry was the first to have more than one character), class hierarchies, permadeath and even alignments among other things. Even the battle command screen we’re so used to seeing, Wizardry.

The top down perspective could be a Ys inspiration though, though it could also be Ultima, which also had a top down perspective similar to what Final Fantasy would do in overworlds.

That said neither Wizardry nor Ultima have any recognizable characters outside maybe Werdna (who doesn’t have much of a consistent design) and Lord British so you could get away with slotting Adol in there. Or Fieg from Xanadu.
