Have you checked out Metroid Planets? It's a fan remake of Metroid 1 with redone graphics, QOL changes, and level making and sharing a la Super Mario Maker.

Nah I can't say I have! I've just started Metroid Zero today on the recommendation of @DragonMals and really enjoying it so far. Thinking of doing a write up on them both once it's comped. Had the chance to play anything recently?
