Play this a lot after discovering it recently im in a SHMUP group on fb and i enjoy
reviewing and educating others to whats out there.

Yo I had never heard of Daioh, but I must have it in my Mame, that looks cool so I'm gonna try it out.

Truxton 2 is one of the coolest looking Toaplan games, and Mushihimesama is a classic, I still need to get back trying to clear it in regular arcade difficulty.

Okay I asked around my shmup community and found out Daioh is pretty much a whole series unto itself! There's several other related games, that are pretty much sequels. Daioh is already cool and Shienryu is pretty much a direct sequel/remake. It eventually leads to Triggerheart Excelica, which just had a recent release.

I love the world of shmups where some random ass tiny indie studio that exists since 1993 somehow has published 20 games that are all niche cult classics among the already niche community... I feel a similar thing for the Zeal series, and of course Touhou

Someday I'll do R-Type Leo and even Cosmic Cop since it's a spin-off set in the same universe.

Oh and Delta HD is announced.

yes i heard about delta HD nice one r type leo is the best r type and i had super r type on snes in the 90s

That period of the deep dive when you get into a new genre is always so much fun. I had that with shmups a few years ago over a summer vacation and I grabbed so many games when I came home. My game of choice to get into it again was Graze Counter GM. Highly recommend it btw.

I absolutely adore the macross sh'mups, yes, even the original nintendo macross game, it was awesome when you're 8 years old and there was no other way to use a Valkyrie in any games.

DYRL on the saturn/psx is my favourite one, though the 1992 arcade dyrl game is a close second.

Maybe some Raiden IV tonight when it gets dark. This is my day off being a carer so im gaming all day and cooking food. Had a storm sweep through this morning high winds.

Played this one today.

Really good looking but hell you need a turbo button for this one ( or be ready to destroy your stick )

Blazing star ( Neo Geo )
Blazing Star! I love that game, play it quite a bit on MAME. Yeah it's one of those that I have to set up an autofire macro, because I ain't ruining my thumb for a game. Still, very cool game with very cool graphics and bosses.
BONUS! Get it more!

I'm surprised how quickly the earthion rom was dumped. It's a great game. Also the salamander 3 M2 game is pretty good. But not sure if I like it better than salamander 2.

Gradius Origins
Already have the fit girl repack and I didn't have to wait an hour to download it.

This version on the PS2 is so good.

I like Darius Gaiden.
The music from zantata and the game itself really draws you in. I have played this game a lot.

I played Zanac Neo (PS1) a few weeks back and it's a pretty painless 1cc, plus you can save your progress in between stages. I love the weapon system but the game doesn't have a strong identity in the audiovisual department other than a few decent tunes. Still worth checking out. I was halfway hoping it would suck so I could say something like "Zanac? More like Xanax - this shit puts me to sleep!"
Isn't M2 making a Zanac Aleste called Zaleste?

Progear is great! But CAVE bullet hell patterns are already hard to deal with on a vertical screen, even worse when it's flipped, and there's also weirdo bullet cancel mechanics to deal with. It was actually one of the first CAVE games I've played, when I got the Capcom arcade collection on the Switch. One day I might be able to finish it, furthest I've got is start of stage 4?

Akai Katana has the issue of being locked down on MAME by Exa-Arcadia, cursed be their greedy name. It's not even their version of the game. Anyway. Good game too, I have solved that issue with a custom MAME build.

My thing with hori shmups, is that a lot of them are designed completely differently from verticals. They rely A LOT more on memorization, things come at you from way more angles at once, your hitbox tends to be HUGE and your shots pretty piddly at the start of the game. A lot of deaths end up feeling more like developer gotchas and unnannounced traps than an actual mistake on the player's end (that's why I hate R-Type), then there is the "Gradius Syndrome" that a lot of them suffer from, where if you die in an inopportune spot, you just lost your entire run, as it's very difficult or sometimes actually impossible to recover without all your powerups. And lastly, my eyes just aren't as trained to identify and follow bullets in a sideways orientation, I get hit by stuff I'd very easily dodge in a tate game. So, I'm playing more games like this to get used to these things, and learn how to employ them in my advantage instead! Call it a training arc, if you will.
I have played Akai Kantana Shin on mame as well as well as Techno Parrot. And I think it's a great game overall. The music is God tier and it sounds great through a surround system. I also have the city connection version on switch. Because I love this game so much. Exa- Arcadia does suck though, just because they get a liscense to have it on their system doesn't mean they own the full rights to the game. They tried to go after mame with the Dodonpachi Saidaiojou game. But thankfully all you had to do was rename the file to get it to play right.

I'd love to see Ketsui coming to PC.

This, and Batrider. They are bringing R-type Delta to PC as a remake.

I've got Under Defeat (Switch) on the way so looking forward to seeing how they've implemented twin stick controls on that!

I liked Xevious and Gradius on NES, Salamander on GB, Wings on Amiga, Tyrian on Ms-dos.
One day I'll do Xevious because it's basically the most revolutionary shmup after Space Invaders and Galaga. Finally a shooter where you can move up and down, that has an actual background and not just pitch black space and finally proper levels that makes you progress in the game rather than having just more enemies.

By the way are Xevious Arrangement and Xevious 3D/G good sequels?

Never really played any shmups I didn't like, not yet anyway.
All of my favorites have been mentioned here but I still gotta say it, Cave rules!

There is a Cave game that I don't see mentioned a lot even though it is still a pretty great game.

Muchi Muchi Pork!

I was less fan of Ibara and MMP compared to the rest of the company's games... I don't know, maybe the gameplay style and presentation.
