What's a game everyone loves but you don't like it?

But, the more i look back at Undertale, the more i realize how much i dislike it...
Undertale. Maybe I'm just too old or maybe I need to try it again, but I bounced off it super hard, and people act like it's this seminal piece of interactive media but never say why.
My work here is done.

I had a very poor experience with Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Played the 3DS version. I just… didn’t care for it. I got about as far as the Forest Temple (the first adult Link temple) before admitting to myself that I hadn’t had fun the entire game and was trying too hard to enjoy myself.

I played it perhaps a bit too late in my life. I was 14, so part of the magic that other people felt was probably not as much there.
I'm not alone. People always praise Ocarina of Time and I'm sure it's a revolutionary game, but I mostly got bored. Idk, I prefer A Link to the Past to Ocarina of TIme.
I guess I don't understand like, hentai visual novels. I play otomes...Idk I guess the hentai ones that are gratuitous aren't 'for' me, so it doesn't really matter.

But again, why don't dudes value a good story as well as boobs? Like have a solid plot and then boom, sexy time. Why is it always kind of just gross and super fake? That's the point?
I enjoy playing visual novels and I'm fine with h-scenes in them, but personally I can not see any enjoyment in playing a visual novel that is just straight sexy time and nothing else to offer. I'm sure there are lots of people out there that fit the target audience for that kind of stuff, but I guess I just don't "satisfy my urges" with visual novels.

The entirety of Zelda series, except for a select few. Also any Mario spin-offs, including Kart.
In fact I just can't get into any Ninty IP, like at all for some reason.

Porn writing, which is extremely easy to do. In many VNs, they literally half-ass it because most writers don't want to do it in the first place or just don't care, but they know sex gets clicks.
Katawa Shoujo is one of the few visual novels with h-scenes in it, where I feel like the writing for those h-scenes were actually good especially compared to other visual novels I played with h-scenes, where a lot of it is just various sound effects, moaning and groaning and various similes used to describe what's happening

Speaking as someone who absolutely does like both good stories and lovely boobs, a lot of hentai games don't really do anything for me, either. A lot of men prefer just cutting to the action with various stock character archetypes because they can't really goon off to the written word. I certainly understand that perspective, and every now and again I can certainly see the appeal of an effort-free wank, but most hentai games either don't have character designs I'm into or focus on fetishes that kind of turn my stomach. Not for me, but god bless people who like 'em.

I'd absolutely be up for an erotic visual novel with gorgeous, well-designed and well-written characters, but I doubt my tastes represent much of the audience. There are exceptions – I kinda grew up with May Club, a very erotic PC-98 VN that absolutely does have some excellent character writing – but in regards to really hardcore stuff, I think it's better to just look at it as the straight pornography that it is.

There's actually quite a bit of data surrounding the fact that men prefer visual pornography, and women prefer it in text, which is why just about 100% of the romance novel genre is geared towards women. I'd be very interested in seeing some erotic lit geared towards men, but I think the closest thing are those ecchi fantasy light novels made in Japan – I doubt we'll ever see much in that space produced in the West, because there's simply no demand for it.

Unsurprisingly I don't like Persona 5, I find it an incredibly miserable experience and I hate the story and characters, its gameplay is good but I find the story and characters incredibly poorly written and the way the game explores its themes incredibly poor, I also think the soundtrack of the game is incredibly overrated (although i've never been much of a fan of the soundtracks of the modern persona games).

I've been recommended that one! Never got around to it. Someday, when I hit another VN phase.

And those scenes in Katawa Shoujo added characterization as well, which is rare as well, which is why Katawa Shoujo is so fondly remembered, even though it has the +18 scenes.

To be fair, i have been far too lazy to read the all ages version just to see how much changes.

Oh, I get it. I love the characters, and that saves it for me. Plus, it was my first Persona, so that gives it an unfair advantage.

But if you don’t mess with the cast, the game will be misery. Again, games with casts that are a key part of loving the game are often the games with the most painful followings. Especially online.

I played a few CS Ware and JAST VNs back in the day and they had their moments. Even the ones that had lousy stories could be enjoyed as unintentional comedies. And the writing for the sex scenes is uniformly appalling and unrealistic, at least from my limited experience.

The ones only centered around sex are called Nukige, which are solely for horny guys to get their rocks off, there is an occasional anomaly that manages to be profound and be a sex game (Like Teaching Feeling), but that's extremely rare.

When it comes to writing, Nukige = Porn, Eroge = Erotica. Usually, but not always true.

You have no idea how bad it gets when you look at the RPG Maker games scene, by comparison, nukiges are tame.
Confession time, I play Nukige just to see how dumb the plot/concept can get, I usually skip all the seggs scene unless it has a funny convo, or the scene has sound and I heard a familiar voice.
That's part of the charm for me.

The sex scenes are often the best source of comedy. There are things I've read in those games I wish I could scrub from my mind.

I guess there are only so many ways one can reasonably describe an intimate encounter. Past that it either becomes an exercise in flowerly metaphors or unintentional comedy.

Hey, don't knock poorly-written sex scenes too much – the Fate Stay/Night series is one of the most profitable franchises of all time! ::winkfelix
First time I played Stay/Night, I recognized Ueda Kana's voice, tried to rush things into Rin's route and finally get to the seggs scene.
Aaaand it's muted.

True, and it somewhat cements the law of averages.

If I could share it without being banned, I'd show you how ridiculous some of the scenes are. Something something I felt it in my ribcage redacted.

Is it... Is it bad that I have a vague idea on what you're talking about?

I mean… that’s probably because the people who actually made their great games left.
Take it from a long-time Sega fan: None of the company's people are worth following in the modern era. If even Yuji Naka couldn't string together a good next-gen game with all the resources in the world, nobody from there could.
