Unpopular Music Opinions

AI can convincingly replicate various genres of mainstream music; we should let it take over that industry and replace pop idols with vocaloid mascots like Miku Hatsune.

Also, Miku's not an AI.

Not all Modern Rap is dogshit.
While most of them are (when looking at mainstream releases), there's still some great ones if you look hard enough.

Synthesizers like miku/utau/sythnv are not even remotely close to what AI is utility-wise though . It’s still a fully manual program, conceptually speaking.

I don't mean creating music using the Vocaloid software. There are AI projects focused on music production that can generate melodies based on genre prompts and can incorporate whatever lyrics are typed in along with the prompt. I brought up Vocaloid solely for its pop idol waifus.

MoistCritical has a video on one of these projects:

This largely comes from people who don’t even listen to music anyhows and most of their exposure is either BGM, AMVs or pop. Tons of modern rappers are not just great, but some of the all-time greats too.

Can you name some examples?

Miku is not gonna replace modern pop musicians, she’s too busy eating her favorite food: bacon-wrapped hotdogs.
Although it would be appreciated, most pop I don’t enjoy. Except Imagine Dragon, I like them. I listened to their LOOM Album a lot. I’d add that as a hot take except I don’t really know the general consensus behind Imagine Dragons other than that everyone knows the spininininininin

Replace completely, no. There is a niche it can fill, though. And frankly, it's not something I support or think will come to pass. I just dropped it here because it seemed outrageous enough for an 'unpopular music opinions' thread.

And yeah, Miku is busy; the other poor Vocaloid mascots are living in soggy cardboard boxes ::sadkirby

I think you’re a pussy if you can't handle a song containing a swear word or less-than-safe analogy, if you don't like it you can turn it off, same with cyberbullying.

Also, music discourse fucking sucks on most sites, it’s just regurgitated opinion after regurgitated opinion.
Calling someone a pussy for preferring being polite is kinda rude imo.

In fact I do think that if someone needs to swear to express an opinion or feeling like an adult they should reconsider their communication process.

No, I mean it's like saying "I love wind instrument music" or "I like female voice songs".

It could be a type of music but it's too vague to be a proper genre imo.

On the other hand chiptunes can be qualified as one.

But saying "video game music" implies it's not like "proper music"

“So” it isn’t. Listening to it or liking it doesn’t change that it’s not really a music genre in the same sense. It’s why it was initially referred to as BGM (background game music) and is frankly my preferred name for it.

I personally still prefer OST because it refers to "Original Soundtrack" which means that the music used in games are still original musics that still works in a void.

BGM sounds like it's just there for the game and nothing else. It deserves to exist even outside of its continuum.

Looks like my opinion is an unpopular one, hence the thread title. ::lol
Your opinion wasn’t contradicted here, though. Quite the contrary. Probably have a second read there.
Unless you’re referring to posts made before yours, which I’m not caught up on yet.

I also remember feeling like I was a fool when I said someday that the music I listened to was "video game music" which made them have a long face.

I think there's still a stigma about them despite how more popular videogames got.

Video game OST isn't a real genre though.
It kinda is, there may not be precise labels for it but there's a group of characteristics that you can find in many videogame songs that you don't find anywhere else.

For example:

You can tell this is a videogame song and not just some regular song simply because of how it is structured.

That’s not what substitutes a genre though. A genre is a much more specific set of characteristics. Game-music can be rock, orchestral and many other things that can’t be grouped together. It’s probably better to refer to it as a category.

Yeah my bad, my reading comprehension goes wonky for a bit.
But still, I feel like saying VGM not a genre kinda invalidates all these talented composer that worked hard on those OST.

A genre is a set of characteristics though. It’s not indicative of quality. That’s like saying all rock is great. It’s a way to describe something removed from how much effort put into it. If we start using quality as a metric to be entering a genre then that would defeat the purpose of what a genre is and just make it seem like gatekeeping. “Sorry Joe, your song is too shitty to be called Rock, doesn’t matter that you used a piano which should’ve been what disqualified it anyhows”.
