Unpopular Music Opinions

I think you’re a pussy if you can't handle a song containing a swear word or less-than-safe analogy, if you don't like it you can turn it off, same with cyberbullying.

Also, music discourse fucking sucks on most sites, it’s just regurgitated opinion after regurgitated opinion.
Swearing in music is overrated, and in general.

There's my unpopular opinion.

You know, cyberbullyings not always so easy... In some cases, you can't even open your computer without recieving any hate at all, so I don't think this applies, everyone has the right to use their devices without having to face constant threats
But still this is not the place to discuss that

I do agree with the song take though

The impracticality of calling people names if they are 'this' or 'that' is unnecessary and unintelligent. You could substitute anything in to those frames. 'You're a pussy if like Yogurt'. 'You're a pussy if you can't drive a stick-shift'. 'You're a pussy if ....' etc etc. Basically anyone who doesn't do what the 'this' or 'that' is doesn't measure up and is not cool. If this is how you operate then it will be a tough time in life for you to find people that measure up to whatever lines of thought you have.

listening to linkin park (and nu metal as a whole) until now is like listening to barney as a baby: you never grew up, you never progressed

metallica nerds literally only listen to metallica
they can't name any other band outside of that, megadeth, slayer, and lamb of god (or any band that's not american for that matter)

queen is the most progressive music normies will ever know of

the beatles suck ass
Don't have to post myself 'cause you said it 🤝
Nu metal is like the most teenager trendy genre ever, I'd say it's paired with nowadays trap (in my country); if ya keep listening to that even after growing up, they got you good lmao

  • Though I understand why the modern music scene has shunned it, I actually do think that the chiptune genre continues to have potential. Listen to a few tracks from the early jubeat or Beatmania games and you'll know what I mean.
  • John Lennon was the weak link in the Beatles, and I mean that purely from a musical perspective. (Though, of course, he was a completely disingenuous person outside of his career, too.) None of his songs even hold a candle to George's material, LET ALONE Paul's.
  • I love Reel Big Fish, but hoo boy are they ever shit. The only decent band that came out of third-wave ska was Less Than Jake (listen to both Losing Streak and Borders and Boundaries, they're GREAT!!!!).
  • Carly Rae Jepsen was probably the single most skilled female vocalist of the late 2000s/early 2010s era. Listen to some of the stuff she did before Call Me Maybe (specifically the Tug of War album), then some of the stuff that came after it (both Emotion albums) and you'll see what I mean. VOICE OF A GODDESS!!!!!!
  • I don't give a shit about Ke$ha, don't care about what she's been through in her life, and think 99% of all her songs are utter poo. Whenever she comes back on the scene and everyone has to pretend like they respect her, I roll my eyes. She has kind of an AI-generated voice.
  • While I do like to say that I can enjoy any kind of music, pre-2015 pop music is my favourite genre. Everything in the mainstream that's come out since then (with some exception) has been absolute poo, and I say that as an objective authority on the matter utterly divorced from nostalgia. (<----- OBVIOUS JOKE)

I use to be a stickler back in the day about using a country origin to describe a genre for example JROCK - Rock music from Japan which is a large umbrella term encompassing many genres which ends up not describing the sound instead only insisting it came from Japan. These days I've lighten up to classifications.

Not sure how unpopular this opinion is but I don't subscribe to the idea of music genres following a hierarchy or line of progression. Start here (this genre), then you will eventually end up at the end here (this genre). When I discover new styles I follow what I enjoy listening to not a arbitrary linear path. Music is art.

K-Pop was so much better in the 90's when they were leaning more towards Euro-Pop style, and they had their own flair too. Now, with their style being more Americanized with that shitty cloud rap genre, and auto-tunes, it's a complete abomination.

I don't get Grateful Dead. All of their songs are completely forgettable. Was it just about the drug culture? I guess that's the only way to enjoy their music, being high and drunk.

Gackt was fucking cringe, and that voice of his got annoying after awhile.

Syd Barrett's style was awful, and him being kicked out of Pink Floyd because he was literally crazy, was the best thing that could happen to them to evolve with Roger Water's stuff, who really was great.

Prince's music completely dropped off once the 90's hit. Unlike Michael Jackson.

More to come as I think of more.

Some more I have, these are mostly about my country's music:

Rata Blanca, Hermética and the rest of early Argentine metal exponents are trash and bland, and only die-hard nationalists (in the music sense) listen to them despite there being thrice as awesome bands in every other place. Same can be said for most national rock bands like Soda Stereo and Los Piojos.

Charly García is the most overrated musician in the country (not counting folklorians), mostly by old tards that keep sucking his dick for having written some lame political songs. He isn't even half of the musician people think he is, and he's being milked to death by the industry even today: his new album is absolute garbage.

Trap is the worst trend to ever exist here, probably the worst slop in music that's even being used by political candidates to appeal to youngsters.

To metalheads: buying 400$ worth of bands' merch every month doesn't make you better than anyone, and certainly doesn't mean that people who just like to sit in his house and listen to music digitally is worse.

I’m sure you’ve made good points but I can't read shit with that bloody font you got going on Chrissy. /j

  • brokencyde are fantastic, the screaming adds both texture and energy that really elevates the songs.
  • vgm fans on twitter need to stop using persona 5, dmc 5, and sonic to bat for the scene, it's overdone and shows that they only have surface level knowledge
  • while kota hoshino is great, i do wish more credit was given to the other armored core composers
  • one of the best things a song can be is kinda sucky, but in a relatable way

Sometimes I feel that lyrics don't have to be very deep to make a good song. Sure, you could have interesting lyrics but if your song's biggest strength is "le deep meaning" above the actual melody then you're just doing poetry with a background noise.

In the same fashion a song/music isn't systematically better because you're using more notes at once, it's why a strong theme can have a fundamentally simple base but can still be catchy with a nice chord progression.

My hottest music take has always been to just let people like what they like. Different music means different things to different people, and shitting on that makes you a prick.

Otherwise, most music genres have some merit or another, and dismissing a whole genre as being bad is folly. Just because *you* don't get it doesn't make it bad. When I hear someone say "This genre is bad" I tend to tune out.

Johnny Cash butchered Nine Inch Nail's Hurt
Spotify has been a net loss for music
Pet Shop Boys > Depeche Mode, and it aint even close
Pinkerton as a whole doesn't hold up that well (and it used to be one of my favorite albums in high school)
On Avery Island > In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
I feel like there's been an attempted cultural rehabilitation of nu-metal but people were right in hating it the first time around. One of the nadirs of mainstream rock trends.

Probably a lot more, I don't know.

One more: I don't think musical taste being subjective disqualifies the notion of there being "bad" and "good" taste. Honestly, the idea of all art being subjective is a really glib opinion that stifles discourse.

With all due respect, what gives an individual the merit to decide good art from bad? Your taste will inevitably deviate from another's, so what gives your opinion more merit from someone you think has lesser taste, beyond a subjective answer?

Edit: There's nothing wrong with having subjective tastes or opinions on music, everyone does and so do I. An "objective" opinion is more what I take issue with, seems incredibly arrogant to me.
