Underrated games...

Gear Fighter Denhoh on the PS1 is a pretty cool beat em up with Fighting Game mechanics and a VS Mode that I wish gets a translation. He also appeared on SRW J on GBA.

Oh! Recalled one fighting game and mecha
The people who like Gundam say that Gundam Endless Duel on SNES is very good and is pretty underrated.
Cyberbots, by Capcom, is also pretty solid and not associated with any anime/manga franchise

The first 4 Melty Blood games
Arcana Heart 1 +2

There's also quite a few anime fighters on the PS3 if you ever start dabbling with that

God Hand (ps2)
a great beat em up that was actually criminally underrated by critics

These aren’t necessarily criminally underrated but perhaps aren’t as well know or talked about as much as they could be:

Destrega (ps1) a somewhat slept on and quite unique fighting game. Very fun. Strong anime influence.

Evil Zone (ps1) great fighter with heavy anime influence

Alundra (ps1) anime style RPG? Just give this a go! You could do faaaaaar worse. This is a real adventure!

Wild arms series of games (ps1and ps2)

Breath of fire 3 or 4 - these are quite well known but I wanted to add them because they’re very “anime” and the pixel art is phenomenal.

I just so happen to LOVE Front Mission ( ::heart 4). Will have to give it a try! Looks cool.

Front Mission absolutely. FM2 created the mechanical basis for the whole series, but FM1 is excellent as well (especially the DS version with the lag fix).

Fill-in Cafe's Mad Stalker: Full Metal Force (1997) on PlayStation

More of a brawler, beat'em up style mecha game. A remake from the original X68000 which was also ported to FM Towns, PC Engine Arcade CD-ROM² and more recently dumped Mega Drive.

Hudson Soft's Blood Gear (1994) on PC Engine Super CD-ROM²

Which is a criminally underrated mecha RPG that fits your description- although its on PC Engine CD. I've started playing this not too long ago. Since it was never localized, and currently no fan translation exists I'm using guides online.

Gonna throw in my recc for SRW OGs as well. It's the cream of the crop, and has so much content I still don't feel like I'm half done after 100+ hours. The animations and story make the modern games look like slop. Seriously, give it a go.

Hopefully Gaiden and 2nd OGs get a translation soon, and maybe a retranslation for Moon Dwellers.
Oof that would be the dream but I doubt it

Alpha 1's TL has been in WIP for more than a decade and it's still not done, and 2nd OG is even bigger
Gaiden does seem doable enough for the team that worked on the OGs TL

The weird thing is there's a full translation of 2nd OGs is readily available, but no one has worked on actually implementing into the game.

I assume interfacing with it is significantly more complicated because of the PS3 is more advanced/complicated, and it being super niche in the West isn't doing progress any favors.

A decent chunk of Gaiden is already in OGs itself so the job is partially done, I wonder why there's no news on it.

The only thing I think will never happen is Moon Dwellers getting a retranslation, as sucky as that is. At least it's basically a filler game.

Based name and icon btw.

oh right, the OG 2.5 section, still I do want Gaiden cause of the Free Battle Mode
And yeah while there's a written script TL of 2nd, actually translating the game is the extremely difficult part.

I don't see MD ever being touched again unfortunately, shame cause in general its a fun OG that just decides to give you the SRX nearly at the start for shits and giggles

based pfp for you too, the R-1 is awesome

Since most underrated RPGs have already been mentioned, I think I would go with (keeping in mind that no, I cannot read Kanji) :

-Tsugunai
-Blood Will Tell (Dororo)
-Chaos Legion
-Downhill Domination
-Flipnic
-Gungrave
-Kessen III
-Naval Ops : Commander
-Samurai Western

im putting some of these on my list.

Bro, if there's ever a game that needs a big time remaster, its Downhill Domination.

Nice I will add this on bookmark! Really thanks this helpful for looking hidden gems.

i actually havent heard of some of these, they look fucking sick

the gitaroo one looks suspiciously like Oda's art, with a hint of Araki

what's virtua quest like? i remember hearing that name soooo long ago but never really got to know (or maybe i'm also mixing it up with virtua fighter, something even way older)

If you like Pinball, try Flipnic by the Ape Escape devs. It's a Pinball game that specifically takes advantage of the fact that it's a video game, if that makes any sense.

If you can read decent Japanese, the Evangelion 2 game is pretty good; essentially it has Persona 3 elements before Persona 3 was a thing.

it has Persona 3 elements before Persona 3 was a thing.
And it just used good old ancient dating simulator games' popularity in Japan so no wonder games that had a high school theme would have such elements, even some PS1 fighting games take place in school that really Persona series didn't add anything new to the table in that regard. Considering how popular this anime is and mostly because of their girl character it was no rocket science they specifically released dating games of this anime lol.
