Underrated games...

if you're lookin' for real obscure underrated shit I suggest you panzer bandit

this game was never released outside japan and its a 2d beat em up and imo one of the best of the genre

Beyond the Beyond is a cute little Camelot game they made for the ps1. Not obscure in any way, but Shadow Tower, Echo Night, King's Field are all Fromsoft first person dungeon crawlers that I had a blast with at least trying them. Mizurnna Falls is a Twin Peaks inspired mystery/immersive sim.

For me, "peak" comes down to an aesthetic/style for that generation. My list for that is:
Bust-A-Groove 2
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Brave Fencer Musashi
Alundra
Chrono Cross

Not enough people talk about Tomba!/Tombi!
it's a fantastic platform adventure game that didn't get that much attention at the time, and as such is a bit rarer to find these days.

It's got playstation energy in spates.

I have the fast pants.

Koudelka.
Baroque.
Planet Laika.
Brave Fencer Musashi.

I wonder if they are still considered underrated these days.

As for peak, just play Xenogears.
but...but...what bout Ape Escape and Alone in the Dark?

Bugs Bunny: Lost In Time. I first found out about this game through an "issue" of Playstation Underground that my cousin had that he later gave to me. It had a cheat code to completely unlock ever level. Playing it, the game is very fun, if not a little jank. Wish it was talked about in the same way Sheep Hunter is

Also Muppet Monster Adventure. Love this game, got it from my dad in a care package. Had never heard of it, and that's a shame because it's such a fun "creepy cute" collect-a-thon platformer about the muppets turning into classic horror monsters (Gonzo as "Nose-fratu" still makes me laugh) that just oozes charm (as expected of Psygnosis). Unfortunately it had a very limited American print run is kind of a bit on the pricier side

LOVE me some Ape Escape

I'm trying to get back into videogames so id really appreciate some recommendations.
You say "getting back" into videogames, so that implies that you may have played the big classics on the system already.

So staying in the RGT style, here as some brilliant games you can get from this very website that you may have missed the first time around as they were Japanese only games, now you can play in English!:

The adventures of little ralph is an easy to get into fun platform game for the system. It's a pick up and play gem that was a Japanese exclusive, but should of come to the west.

Goemon is one of the old Konami mascots and this is an action platform game from the era when Konami were on fire. Now translated for the first time, absolutely worth your time.

Harmful Park is a shoot 'em up much like the Parodius games. it's fun, it's colourful, it's just an all-round great time!

Maybe a good old JRPG is more up your street. Well Popolocrois Monogatari an isometric Role Play Game, that's very much back to basics in terms of design; but that just means it doesn't have overly complex gameplay elements that it doesn't need! this was actually published by Sony themselves.

Hehehehehe! Uh, this is like a point and click adventure or something. It's like cool and stuff, you should try it butt munch!

The classic walk along beat 'em up from the PlayStations Japanese launch. If you enjoyed games like Final Fight or Streets of Rage, you'll love this.

if you want some real niche underrated unknown type of shit, try Carnage Heart. If you're the right type of person for that game it's insanely good

Final Fantasy Tactics.png

This will always be my number one PSX game, and is the one I come back to more than any other.

Chrono Cross.png

Another great RPG that doesn't get as much attention as it should.

Currently playing Breath of Fire 4, and wish that I had picked it up back when it first came out.

Fantastic tactical mech game where you can customize every part and the paint job of your mechs. Story splits part way through the game and you have essentially two main stories to play through.

Intense puzzle game with characters from Street Fighter and Darkstalkers "fighting" each other as you play.

Kahen Soukou Gunbike: Speed Power Gunbike
可変走攻ガンバイク

Gunbare! Game Tengoku: The Game Paradise 2

I do agree, the most underrated is probably Chrono Cross

However, a favorite of mine I don't hear much about is a puzzle game called Roll Away (also called Kula World or Kula Quest outside of North America). It's a really wild 3D game about rolling a ball in shifting gravity

I'll give a recommendation to :
Syphon Filter 1, 2 and 3. Very solid third person action games, even if some of the stealth levels can be pretty unforgiving (especially in 2) .
Tenchu 1&2 . VERY good stealth-action ninja games.
Tekken 3. Excellent fighting game, with good graphics and sounds that still holds up imo.
Ace Combat 2. Good flying-action game with an enjoyable soundtrack.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater - classic skateboarding game.
