NDS Toughts on the Nintendo DS

The DS... Is no better than a PS1, probably weaker, weak 3D graphics abilities, two screens (or one screen cut in half) and is too damn small.

That's my overall review.
I'd argue that even if it's around a PS1 (well technically closer to a N64 in term of processor). Aside from space the game could handle Resident Evil and Rayman 2.

It was still a handheld that could manage 3D despite the resolution so it's quite a technical feat.

It's not one screen cut in half though, the resolution was slightly higher than a GBA's and the Lite and DSi had a bigger screen than the Tank.

It would be better if 3/4 of its games weren't shovelware.
I'd argue also that even if there are shovelwares (like most popular consoles like how the PS1, PS2 and Wii had) you still had plenty of actual good games.

I mean, the presence of shovelwares does not mean that the console is automatically bad (unless almost every games are).

And technically also Diddy Kong racing and Mario 64

Mario 64 isn't perfect but quite impressive.

I kinda wish we got more games of the style.
The DS LEGO games are the closest thing we have to more collectathon ds games

Out of all the handhelds I have, my DSi is the toughest, it's 15 years old sure but I never change the battery, it's still in good working condition, no yellowish screen or whatever, everything is just great as I got it years ago.

I used to hate touchscreens, but that's because I didn't know about DS. It has the best touchscreen games, way ahead of any phone game even today.

Advance Wars - objectiveley better with touchscreen, and by itself better than all phone games combined.

Might and Magic Clash of Hearoes - genious puzzle battler, natural touch controls, pixel graphics better than phone's sharp version.

Battle of Giants Mutant Insects - AAA touchscreen game.

Dead'n'Furious - light gun nervously smoking in the corner.

Drone Tactics - georgous 3D mecha bugs.

Heroes of Mana - touchscreen RTS that's not stupid tower defence?!!

Kirby Mass Attack - !!!

I can go on and on, but gotta stop myself. The big problem - the console is freakishly ugly. Solution - melonds, it all fit pretty well on modern smartphones with their oversized screen.

Never heard of these games, first time I even see them! Will play it out of curiosity.

I just look at some of the ports and games, and using Chocobo Dungeon as a baseline.

And technically also Diddy Kong racing and Mario 64

When your screen resolution is 240x180, almost any 3D game will run, because there's very little to draw, and accuracy isn't important either, so fast integer math can be used.

I forgot that there was a DS port of this one.

Resolution itself isn't directly correlated but the draw distance is important though.

Run a N64 emulator on the Pi4 and you'll change your mind.
Runs smooth like butter... at 320x200. Runs like ass above that. Which makes me think there probably isn't a proper GPU in the DS, and you wouldn't need it at that resolution.

once as a kid me and my sister were really bored and my ds had stopped working, so we grabbed it by either end and tore it in half to see if it would still work. shockingly it did not

I had the first model back in 2008 and I played a lot of games (Golden Sun Dark Dawn, New Super Mario Bros DS and all mainline Pokémons). It was a handheld with its own vibe and I really appreciated that.

Thank's everyone for giving me your toughts on the DS, I will release the article today! So expect to see your comment on the article.

I feel that I'm missing the experience by having a New 2DS XL but if the game is good it's good regardless.
Nah that's fine, I play most of my DS games on my New 3DS XL anyways, if you have something to say about it, comment!

Somehow I don't like the look of DS games on a 3DS family console...

Maybe it's just me but it's a bit blurry.

Blurry? You can say that the upscaled aspect ratio makes it crunchy, but I never had an issue of not reading the text in a game.

Love the DS! Bought a really good condition DS Lite last year to play through FFCC Ring of Fates last year!

I think it's a really good, portable device still in 2025 still. 3DS probably beats it still but the scaling like some have mentioned sours it a bit as it's quite blurry.

Simple thread, I want to hear what RGT has to say about the console. I'll be up front, I'm writing a article on the DS and I want to hear what the people think about the handheld, it will help me to write a more concise article.
Adore the DS family, It was my first console and up to this day I still love playing with my DS (although my old one was stolen) and it's a shame that there probably wont be anything like the DS era again or that. Hope that I'll continue to play a lot more DS in the future and play titles in Japanese some day

the upscaling is very poor, if you press start or select while booting a DS or GBA game it'll boot it up in its native resolution but it leaves a ton of blank space on the screen afterwards
