The Café -- General Off-Topic Chat (AKA: Let's Break The Ice)

Dunno if it's bc I rarely browse the threads but this site isnt as toxic as some people say it is

The nature of a forum makes it harder for drama to hop threads. If this was a chatroom I'd be gone ages ago.

It isn't toxic at all, more so some threads get out of hand due to the nature of the topic itself or a topic was brought up that's inflammatory and derails the thread.

I like it on here, though it's a bit quieter than it usually is at the moment and some I used to see online frequently a while back aren't on a much at the moment, I'm on a bit more as I have good bit more down time than I did for the last while at the moment.

I’ve been catching up on the last two seasons of Silicon Valley

It’s wild how tech moves so obscenely fast, that the world the show is depicting already mostly feels like ancient history.

Greatly recommend the show though!

Tech exploding so quickly makes anything form the 90's seem like ancient history, and anything related to tech in the 80's and 70's seem like the stone age.

Things are definitely slowing down when it comes to video games though, like graphics and such we hit diminishing returns around 2018 or so, and games aren't ever going to being making any sizable leaps anymore. So we return to the early 2000's flare of unique graphics and gameplay elements, and this is a very good thing in my eyes. I was quite surprised by how good the demo for Pragmata was, I now want to buy and play it fully :)

For sure, but it just feels extra palpable with that particular show right now because the show only ended in 2019, right on the tip before Covid hit and the NFT fad and AI epidemic. I used to think that nothing had really changed in a decade, but man has it ever!

It makes the entire show an extra fun time capsule because it's in general a really accurate and biting look into how tough and cold and simultaneously clumsy and ramshackle the elite tech industry can be.

Sometimes i feel a bit disconnected to everyone else irl, cause here where i live I don't have many friends that share the same interests that i do. I like retro games, comics, books, old animes, you know, mostly niche topics. It's hard to find people that share those interests irl.
And since my childhood friends are going their separate ways, some even marrying, i spend most of my time here on the forum. Sad, i know.
It's like some people say, it's harder to make friends when you're older. Makes sense, we all have our responsibilities, our jobs and family. And also i'm not that social to begin with, so there's that too.
That's a me problem, something i need to work on, but i wondered if someone here on the forum feels the same way.

Going through the exact same thing right now. Do you live in the countryside too?

I'm autistic, my daily routine is watching everything unfold around me while I try to figure out how not to sound entitled, apathetic or "tryhardy" when talking to other people.

It can really feel like a glass jail at times.

Glad to hear that i'm not the only one lol
I live in the suburbs. I like it here, despite the crime rate being kinda high and everything is getting pricey. Sometimes i feel like i'm in Gotham City or something like that :loldog

I don't know if it's the same there where you live, but life here we're always in a rush. There's always someplace to go, something you need to take care of and no time to chat. If don't actively invite people to hang out with you, you hardly will make any friends. I guess that's just the norm, not just here. Thing is, i'm broke, so i can't go frequently to places to eat or go to the cinema for example ::sailor-embarrassed

It's kinda become the norm, a lack of third spaces for us to actually connect with other people that are similar, it's also behind many people failing to find a romantic partner.

We've too much to do, too little time to do it in and we barely have the mental energy to hang out with people much anymore. People worked less hours in easier jobs between the 70's and 2000's for the most part, but "hustle culture" has reared it's ugly head again and as it were, don't work so much, the only people who will remember how late you worked anywhere will be your kids. But also things have become shockingly expensive, so we have to work longer hours etc.

Over the last 5 years, I've not had much time to myself as I opted to do a degree during covid, and I picked the wrong course and wasted a year, hence the 5 years.

People in general are just too burnt out to spend much time with people, though many of us do still enjoy spending time with people, it's hard to do that when you feel burnt out and annoyed.

Felt this in my bones.
Been insanely restless lately because I hurt my foot and have been glued to my desk the past few days.
We'll get through it!

What the? Someone said this site was toxic? Who the fuck said that? We should find this guy and drag 'em out into the street, and then beat 'em up, and take his shoes. That'll show 'em to think dedicated forums about video games are toxic! Poser....

Someone tried robbing me today.

Funny how much less keen they were after I pulled a knife on them.

Fucking asshole.
Sorry to hear, it happened to my grandma too a while ago.

You're not the only one, my friend. I've also been dealing with this, alongside my anxiety and mild depression issues. I'll be doing therapy in order to improve myself, and being able to live properly. I only pra you can find comfort in something or someone, and if needed, seek help. I wish you all the best on your endeavors ::peacemario
