I can find many but I'll only mention the one that bothers me deeply:

Without spoiling you all I can say is this box art has a specific deep meaning that eventually makes sense as you play it. No, it's not about "romantic love", it's beyond that. Especially when you get to know the girl and the boy, the life they live and how their ordinary life and trivial existence become part of a divine situation you see their tragic relationship with each other in one of the route in the game that I can say "true story". Also the tall building in the distance and the dragons means a lot for the game.

When Japanese developers sees their video game as artwork that has abstract deep meanings, but then they look at Americans all they think is "Americans only care about violence" then they just put some generic box art that indicate "there is an action in the game, it fits to your sense" lol. So here is the awful American version box art:

Yeah, man, show me a guy holding a big sword like this is all the game is about. The bigger the sword, the higher the testosterone, right? And put some girl there. It's bonus if the guy seem he protecting a girl. lololol

Honestly there’s a lot, though funnily enough this might be a case where I say the international art is better

The poses are more dynamic, it shows off the first stratum where the first part of the game actually takes place, they’re all in battle poses like they’re about to fight whatever’s in the labyrinth and Armoroad is now in the back, better representation of Etrian Odyssey III if you ask me. Shame HD went back to the old art.

The first Etrian Odyssey’s box art I’m mixed on though. The Japanese box art has them all in battle poses but there’s no fucking background lmao. The western box art has art of the labyrinth, but the characters look like deers in headlights. Combine the two personally

It's one of those case when they really went overboard to give a different image to the games, especially in the Snes era. The first Psx game had it rough too with that bland cover.
Thankfully they started changing direction with BF4 but they still had to change things here and there.
In BF5 they had an gigantic amount of fantastic illustrations but they instead used the 3d models.
I'd praise the EU version: even if they didn't used the japanese illustration they still used a more atmospheric approach with the dragon symbols and glyphs.

Dunno who made the call to slap a lame box art on the cover in the west back then. Thankfully covers tend to be the same in all regions now.

Except for that age rating. Germany have the most stupid sized age rating i've ever seen. Ruins the entire cover, it's as if they think everyone in Germany needs glasses to see.

SIGNALIS has a simple cover, but the Japanese cover's red is more story\character related over the implied horror in the western cover.
