Sonic Megathread

I think the recommended way to play is steam with a million mods to undo the changes away from the dreamcast these days
Is there a good way to be able to play Steam SADX without requiring Steam to be activated?

if it helps i could post my mod order list or offer recommendation mods for Steam SADX, either way that's how I play too. (need to check out Sonic 3 AIR)

Mostly certain it uses steam as drm but I can test tomorrow for you. Will report back!
I really dislike DRM for games that are over a decade and a half old.

DRM for the latest AAA is understandable not for a Dreamcast game being ported five times.

What do yall think of the US soundtrack of Sonic CD since we're on that topic? I really do think it's a great soundtrack that's just as good if not better than the JP soundtrack and I like almost every song in it and the fact that a soundtrack this great was made in only one month(If I remember right). It definitely took a different direction from the JP one but I think this direction is really good and just as unique

I'm of the opposite opinion, I think the jp/eu soundtrack is vastly superior. I personally think it's more in keeping with the style of the other sonic games from the time and generally more fitting to the context also. The worst outlier to me being the boss theme which sounds like it has a horror vibe.

I'm more used to the JP/EU one.

Miracle Edition allows per act setup music but I wish we could swap the soundtrack on the go like Wonderboy Dragon's Trap Remake.

On another subject I got CrossWorlds on the Switch (with a Black Friday Deal), yeah it's inferior than the PS5/PC/Xbox but I don't want to spend 70 on Steam for a digital game.

Maybe it was a mistake considering the Switch's power but I think I could handle it.

If the werehog doesn't become available via a DLC then I'd consider that this game would be basically sold in an incomplete state.

Bought Sonic Origins on sale and it is very enjoyable and not thanks to Sega but mods.
Especially the BGM mod that has music from MIDI (from Roland to SB AWE32),piano, FLAC, remastered etc. and also the various gfx restoration and fix mods.
Ultrafix mod has gone a long way.

What's Ultrafix?

I've only gotten Origins on console just so I could play CD and 3&K on it.

it is a mod that addresses over 900 issues. available on places like gamebanana

changelog
Thanks, this looks interesting.

Maybe if I get motivated to properly buy it instead of playing the decompilations...

Even if I consider the Advance Trilogy to not reach the quality of the Genesis one (mainly because of the screen crunch) I really like what they did with the GBA's soundchip (if there's one) and how futuristic/y2k it felt like.

I liked Techno Base and Cybertrack, they were much better representation of a cyberspace than Sonic Frontiers to me.

I almost wished they made Sonic's world into a "near future where flying cars are commonplace" than just our contemporary era.

I kinda miss when Sonic had Nights into Dreams references scattered around (between Casinopolis and Radical Highway)

The 3DS port of Generations also had that sign but sadly it's static

I don't know if there are references to other Sega franchises in that series.

Wait, were there a Modern Night with the Xmas design before that?

Or is that just the lighting?

Also Joe Musashi should be in CrossWorlds, he literally has a board in his games.

Since I'm a huge Saturn Sonic fan I post that one but I'm tempted to make my own thread about it

I'll probably redo Sonic 1 Forever, Sonic 2 Absolute and perhaps Sonic 3D in 2D this year.

I need to check if there are new romhacks for Sonic on the Genesis but it seems that fangames have become the new way of making fanmade content since roms have technical limits.

I need to check SAGE stuff yet I'm a bit less fan of unfinished tech demos and non-Sonic games.

Don't think I posted on this thread before, so I'll say...
Anyone like Sonic Rush Adventure? I feel this game is overlooked immensely and I do overall prefer it over the original, ngl.

I think that there are several reasons:

Not hearing Naganuma's iconic OST made people like the ambience less.
The fact it came after Sonic 2006 and Sonic and the Secret Ring made people less inclined to buy a new Sonic game
Zelda Phantom Hourglass made it seem like it tried to rip off Zelda (although both are just sea themed game but are absolutely not the same).
Robotnik isn't the main antagonist of the game but that weird robot that looks like him.

But I wish they kept the Sol Dimension as such and never made that whole "Blaze's World is actually the future" twist the Sonic Team did... Too bad we'll probably never go there ever again pretty much like why we'll never go back on Little Planet nor Planet Wisp...

Is this a good time to say I fucking love Sonic 1? I had it on Genesis (and later Mega Collection) but I always played 2 and 3 more. I hadn't played it much for a while at the time, but in early 2021 the decomps of the mobile remakes came out and it got me seriously playing the first two games again. Sonic 2 will always be my favorite of the 2D games but I feel like I gained a new appreciation for Sonic 1 and it's only gotten stronger. I actively prefer to play the original Genesis release these days because I feel like "fixing" things like the ground speed cap to match the other games just lessens the uniqueness of Sonic 1. Much like the Adventure games, Sonic 1 encourages you to use rolling by significantly raising your speed cap over your running speed. I like to spend as much time rolling in these games as possible so, as you can imagine, this appeals to me.

I don't even mind Labyrinth Zone that much. I don't think I'd choose to play it by itself but it doesn't piss me off.

Speaking of things the remake "fixes", kids these days will never know the horrors of Sonic 1 spikes.

It's a cool trailer but 0 adventure era gameplay moments? I'm not asking something obscure like 8-bits Sonic nor Segasonic the Hedgehog Arcade game but come on, it's also a part of history.

I'm not talking about Sonic X nor the Sonic Generations display of City Escape but the actual levels from Sonic Adventure 1&2 (and Heroes).

That's a debate about "improving genuine flaws vs respecting fidelity".

Sonic 1 Forever and Sonic 2 Absolute have options to fix or not those thankfully. I'm always for remasters that have customisations like that.

Sonic 1 is an oddball of the series thanks to the early instalment weirdness yet I feel like retroactively putting stuff like spindashes and Super Sonic can be nice to have a fresh experience of the game.

Much like the Adventure games, Sonic 1 encourages you to use rolling by significantly raising your speed cap over your running speed. I like to spend as much time rolling in these games as possible so, as you can imagine, this appeals to me.
Sonic was made with pinball in mind so this explains that idea. I'd still say that the spin dash was a game changer for the series.

However the instant boost button for Rush and Unleashed onwards was not the best idea since this would trivialise platforming and battling enemies (who are nowadays more like homing attack obstacle than proper foes). Rush and Rush Adventure at least had the air trick system to make it more interesting and you still have to manage the boost meter by keeping those tricks or else you'd lose it entirely.

I don't even mind Labyrinth Zone that much. I don't think I'd choose to play it by itself but it doesn't piss me off.
Labyrinth on the Genesis was laggy so that's its issue.

Speaking of things the remake "fixes", kids these days will never know the horrors of Sonic 1 spikes.
I remember when there was a big debate about it being the intended way of punishing the player or if it was a genuine glitch.
