Sonic Megathread

This game is probably my second favorite Sonic racing game falling right behind Riders, I really do appreciate just how difficult 100%ing this one is considering just how much time and skill you can get out of it.

Sorry but I meant better than which Mario Kart?

In general! I like mario kart but I just like the heavier physics and the boost mechanics and less impactful items of ctr more; plus I just liked crash more than mario in general :p

I see.

But I think Mario Kart has always aimed at being a party racing game. CRT's boost system seems nice though.

the remake of CTR killed it for me sadly...
I'm curious to hear it!

It makes it just that little more technical!
For similar reasons I prefer the gameplay of double dash over wii and 8's (though those two have the better track selection)

I loved DS mostly out of nostalgia (but those destroyed d-pads thanks to the snaking technique).

Wii had some technicality but mostly from that infamous Funky Kong + that one Bowser Bike. It feels a bit like how Meta Knight had his own gameplay from the rest of Brawl.

Sadly even for casual play I kinda find MK Double Dash and Wii a bit too chaotical because of the amount of items (twice for DD + the special items that are overpowered like the giant shell) and how Wii had many items that affects everyone like the POW Block and the Mega Mushroom being an even more busted Starman. I still loved the bikes in that entry.

MK8 Deluxe almost felt too easy on the other hand.

But for the technicality I'd say that MK isn't the right franchise. I'd even tell people that if they want a really hard and technical racing game they should try F-zero instead.

i'm guessing the boosting part of it i guess... i tried to play online and i needed to learn how to boost. so i could not get use to it.... i really don't recall other then that.

I remembered when ClementJ64 played the entire Series at that point. That was how (Besides my cousin having a copy of Sonic Rush, I played Mega Collection Plus at a hotel one time, and watching the Western Cartoons and 4kids Sonic X) I was introduced to the series.

Playing Sonic 3 A.I.R and Sonic Robo Blast 2 on mobile thanks to a gamepad with a built-in stand feels nice.

I forgot to edit it but I could legitimately forfeit the rest of the franchise in favour of those two.

PS: is there any native port for SA1 outside of emulation?

I think the recommended way to play is steam with a million mods to undo the changes away from the dreamcast these days

Is there a good way to be able to play Steam SADX without requiring Steam to be activated?

Mostly certain it uses steam as drm but I can test tomorrow for you. Will report back!

if it helps i could post my mod order list or offer recommendation mods for Steam SADX, either way that's how I play too. (need to check out Sonic 3 AIR)

I really dislike DRM for games that are over a decade and a half old.

DRM for the latest AAA is understandable not for a Dreamcast game being ported five times.

Metal Sonic is the best rival he ever had.

Yes, even compared to Shadow.

What do yall think of the US soundtrack of Sonic CD since we're on that topic? I really do think it's a great soundtrack that's just as good if not better than the JP soundtrack and I like almost every song in it and the fact that a soundtrack this great was made in only one month(If I remember right). It definitely took a different direction from the JP one but I think this direction is really good and just as unique

I'm of the opposite opinion, I think the jp/eu soundtrack is vastly superior. I personally think it's more in keeping with the style of the other sonic games from the time and generally more fitting to the context also. The worst outlier to me being the boss theme which sounds like it has a horror vibe.

I'm more used to the JP/EU one.

Miracle Edition allows per act setup music but I wish we could swap the soundtrack on the go like Wonderboy Dragon's Trap Remake.

On another subject I got CrossWorlds on the Switch (with a Black Friday Deal), yeah it's inferior than the PS5/PC/Xbox but I don't want to spend 70 on Steam for a digital game.

Maybe it was a mistake considering the Switch's power but I think I could handle it.

If the werehog doesn't become available via a DLC then I'd consider that this game would be basically sold in an incomplete state.

Bought Sonic Origins on sale and it is very enjoyable and not thanks to Sega but mods.
Especially the BGM mod that has music from MIDI (from Roland to SB AWE32),piano, FLAC, remastered etc. and also the various gfx restoration and fix mods.
Ultrafix mod has gone a long way.

What's Ultrafix?

I've only gotten Origins on console just so I could play CD and 3&K on it.

it is a mod that addresses over 900 issues. available on places like gamebanana

changelog
Thanks, this looks interesting.

Maybe if I get motivated to properly buy it instead of playing the decompilations...

Even if I consider the Advance Trilogy to not reach the quality of the Genesis one (mainly because of the screen crunch) I really like what they did with the GBA's soundchip (if there's one) and how futuristic/y2k it felt like.

I liked Techno Base and Cybertrack, they were much better representation of a cyberspace than Sonic Frontiers to me.

I almost wished they made Sonic's world into a "near future where flying cars are commonplace" than just our contemporary era.
