I see mania as a Medley game, reprising leitmotifs. I'm a big fan of reuse of setting and theme which is why I like Tenchi Muyo and When thy Cry: Higurashi so much and why american cape comics work for me (although i have kind of cooled on them). On the other hand, I also see why, when given the opportunity to do something new and cool, it's incredibly annoying to go back to green hill.Mania's biggest issue is how 80% of the game is recycled from previous games but if Generations is good despite that then Mania has no issues. Automated sections were in 2 and 3&K.
Heroes would've been fine if it was way less slippery and if you didn't have to redo the game four hecking times to get access to the true ending (besides getting the Chaos Emeralds). I really hate how they changed what was basically a difficulty select (Sonic for normal, Dark for Hard and Rose for Easy with Chaotix for a special Mission Mode) into a forced task. I wish they made the level order change if you played with another Team (like Team Dark having a reverse stage order for example since Rouge was in a lab owned by Eggman).
Same with Shadow, I would've rather have had 5 playthrough with the possibility to select the stage post-Westopolis to start a playthrough from.
That same point goes to Heroes, too. As a kid, I was always going to be replaying a new sonic games quite a few times before I'd move onto anything else or play another game I already owned, and Sonic level design really does want you to know it in advance to get the most out of it, so repetition baked into the design reads as fine to me personally and an extension of how they intended you to be playing Sonic on the Mega Drive. level reordering would have been welcome, I agree.
There's a mod for shadow thats on the repo with exactly that change if you feel the need to have that experience.
