Sonic Megathread

They had those DC x Sonic crossover toys in stock at a local toy store yesterday. Took a good bit of restraint to not buy at least one of them... ::sailor-embarrassed

Speaking of 8-bits Sonic I really want to try Pocket Adventure once again.

Also who remembers the edutainment game with Sonic X as the basis?

I want Fang in Modern Sonic so bad.

And I also want Clutch in Modern Sonic too.

What do we think of this game?

I think it's pretty cool! Sure the controls aren't really the best but I think people overhype how bad they are to the point where acting like it's unplayable. The graphics and artsyle are also cool and the game definetly has some charm to it. Though one issue I do have with the game is how unbalanced the characters are

And do I really need to speak about the soundtrack? I think everyone agrees it is one of the best if not the best soundtrack in the entire Sonic series which is saying ALOT considering how good of a soundtrack most Sonic games have. I personally think it is one of the few game with an absolutely PERFECT soundtrack where all songs are 10/10 and it has zero misses(my favourite is Super Sonic Racing and Work it out btw)

The big issue is that people often ignore the shoulder buttons and press up to move when the better way would be using one of the face buttons.

I have played Sonic 1 more than Sonic 2 and I don't know why.

Sonic 2 is harder and longer so I can understand why.

Although I could replay Sonic 1 Forever and Sonic 2 Absolute all day.

Wacky Workbench in CD is way more painful than anything in Sonic 1.
I think it is not THAT painful if you do understand the mechanic. It is still pretty painful but i'd rank it higher than labrynith zone or even marble zone

Marble isn't painful. Labyrinth kinda sucks but it's far from the worst level in the series.

For getting the cage in the bad future it was the worst level but not impossible.

getting the cage?

Is it still controversial to like Sonic Unleashed, including the beat em up sections? I still mourn the Sonic movie we could have had if Paramount had listened to SEGA; we could have had an hour and thirty minutes of action and story with the style and fidelity of the Sonic Unleashed opening. I think if sonic was characterised properly in thee sonic films Ben Schwartz would probably still be a good VA but good goddamn is the movie sonic insufferable.

Sorry, I meant destroying the cage

Which is a secondary quest to get the Good Future in the third act if you destroy it in the first two of a Zone.

One day I'll try finishing the game that way instead of getting the Time Stones since the core of CD is to explore the levels.

Nah, people started loving it again since like a few years ago.

Then again people are also starting to convince that Sonic 2006 was secretly good and that Mania was actually "mid" because the fanbase can never be sure about which games are good or not.

Hell, I even expect Frontiers to get destroyed in a few years and that Heroes and Shadow will get praised.

I'm sorry but non-stop action wouldn't have made the movie systematically good either. A movie is about pacing with high and low action with conversation, even Disney movies followed that structure and I think that the 3-acts one is what works the best in full-length ones.

Also the Unleashed Opening was good because it was 6 minutes long, if it was longer the quality could've deteriorated. Same with Mania Adventure which isn't that long either.

Movie Sonic is a teenager, Sonic has always been that cheeky/rebellious attitude characters like in the games. If Sonic was too serious or adult-like then he would've been out of character.

Speedsters are almost always like that after all.

I am responding to all your post, for for space...

I thought I'd missed something you could do in CD so i got quite excited ahaha. I'd recommend doing a no time stone run; it's it's own kinda fun! I understand criticisms of Mania, there are a lot of automated sections that on repeat playthroughs are quite boring but theres no way I think someone could seriously call it "bad". I'm due a replay of 06, so we'll see if I can milk any enjoyment out of it. I liked Heroes and Shadow, I think you have to take each sonic game on it's own merits and look at what it was trying to accomplish, and I don't think either game really failed.

I understand the need for pacing and a proper story in a film, but the style of the Sonic films is so flat and bland compared to the games and Unleashed was basicly cinema quality when it released in 2008. I awsn't asking for a 90 minute fist fight, but the style of the opening. even in a 90 minutes film a set peice like the unleashed opening would only be exactly that.

I think the departure from the style and the changing of the tone just ruin the point of adapting Sonic at all. There is so much sonic to pull from and his personality is so defined, I just don't see the reason to have made their own version wholesale like that and completely change core parts of the Sonic universe. It feels deleterious to me, not additive.

Honestly the Time Stone retrieval with the 50 rings at the end of the stage like Sonic 1 was kinda tedious. I massively prefer the Sonic 2 and 3&K way of accessing special stages.

Mania's biggest issue is how 80% of the game is recycled from previous games but if Generations is good despite that then Mania has no issues. Automated sections were in 2 and 3&K.

Project '06 is at least decent (yet has had some issues). Sonic 2006's loadings, slowdowns and adventure field missions are where the game really gets tedious even beyond the glitches.

Heroes would've been fine if it was way less slippery and if you didn't have to redo the game four hecking times to get access to the true ending (besides getting the Chaos Emeralds). I really hate how they changed what was basically a difficulty select (Sonic for normal, Dark for Hard and Rose for Easy with Chaotix for a special Mission Mode) into a forced task. I wish they made the level order change if you played with another Team (like Team Dark having a reverse stage order for example since Rouge was in a lab owned by Eggman).

Same with Shadow, I would've rather have had 5 playthrough with the possibility to select the stage post-Westopolis to start a playthrough from.

I don't like the humans in the Sonic movies tbh. I wish they made it 100% digital or hand drawn.

The Sonic OVA was perfect for it.

Movie Sonic is considered as a different version like Boom and Classic after all.

I see mania as a Medley game, reprising leitmotifs. I'm a big fan of reuse of setting and theme which is why I like Tenchi Muyo and When thy Cry: Higurashi so much and why american cape comics work for me (although i have kind of cooled on them). On the other hand, I also see why, when given the opportunity to do something new and cool, it's incredibly annoying to go back to green hill.

That same point goes to Heroes, too. As a kid, I was always going to be replaying a new sonic games quite a few times before I'd move onto anything else or play another game I already owned, and Sonic level design really does want you to know it in advance to get the most out of it, so repetition baked into the design reads as fine to me personally and an extension of how they intended you to be playing Sonic on the Mega Drive. level reordering would have been welcome, I agree.

There's a mod for shadow thats on the repo with exactly that change if you feel the need to have that experience.

How did it?

This game is probably my second favorite Sonic racing game falling right behind Riders, I really do appreciate just how difficult 100%ing this one is considering just how much time and skill you can get out of it.

Sorry but I meant better than which Mario Kart?

In general! I like mario kart but I just like the heavier physics and the boost mechanics and less impactful items of ctr more; plus I just liked crash more than mario in general :p
