Maybe using some pixel art, a little bit more akin to the site's theme, would be a good idea? Really not sure if that'd be possible, since custom-made art can be expensive. But it'd be a welcome addition.

Not really no. His sad sprite is too goofy to be used as a sad emote.

I’m not at my PC, but the main character from Harvest Moon on SNES has a pretty simple and clean sad sprite, you could probably decapitate him too and still make the head look good at 32x32 if anyone wants to give it a shot.

Go to the actual sheet on spriter’s resource if you want to do it, don’t use my bad blurry phone screenshot

Did a 32x32 pic based off of the unofficial mascot of RGT & the folks seem cool with it. I think it's good, but if it's a hard read then it's fine.

Feel free to hate me for this, but I don't think we need a face-palm emote.
It's the kind of thing that can be too heavily directed at someone or their idea, and taken harshly in ways the commentor might not have intended. It's something people interpret differently depending on the individual, and can be very disheartening to someone who might see a lot in their idea, only to have their hopes crushed by people facepalming at it.
