Saturday Movie Night yadda yadda I watch random movie.
Tonight is Blue Streak!

giant-belgianposter-tn.jpg

I just finished watching Giant because I said if like a few people on Tumblr liked a post I made I would.

Well, I'm never doing that again.

I have a thread for old movie watching on my personal Discord server and you can actually tell that I was slowly losing my mind as this continued on. Like... this was a three-and-a-half-hour movie where it felt like NOTHING happened. Yeah, there was a lot of interpersonal drama stuff, but at the same time it just kinda dragged on, and on.

I remember someone describing this as "the super soap opera" and I think that is accurate tbh. This is like the Soap Opera to end all Soap Operas. The final boss of Soap Operas if you would.

Anyway, if you like soap operas, you might like it, but save it for a day you have nothing going on. Like I said, it's almost three and a half hours.

It's time for Saturday Movie Night, again, where I watch random movie on a whim, again.
Tonight, it's Hardcore Henry.

I really wish I had a VR headset for this movie.

Also I've watched (again) The Martian.

I really prefer this one hard sci-fi movie over Interstellar.

(I'm really sorry but Interstellar tries too much with the whole "time loop" and pathos about a father and her daughter).

Today I've watched the 2008 remake of One Missed Call.

I've got mixed feelings on it. I didn't liked the setting and acting, but on my opinion the plot is better presented than in the original 2003 film.

Typhoon Club-I saw a different movie by the same director so I'm curious to see if I'll like this movie as well

Recently, I also watched three other movies. Unbreakable, The Lighthouse and Inu-Oh

Shitty slasher movie. It's the kind of movie you find for a low price at a thrift store and you know the experience will be generic but you still buy it.

Absolute masterpiece. I've never watched as a kid and honestly I'm glad for this. As a kid I'd never enjoy it as I enjoyed watching as a teen, almost adult.

>>> SPOILERS BELOW FOR THE NEW LOONEY TUNES PICTURE "THE DAY THE EARTH BLEW UP". <<<

TL;DR: I really enjoyed it, and I'd strongly recommend it if you like silly, funny, looney cartoons.

I've been waiting to watch this movie for a long, long time. I remember seeing promo images for it in late 2023, and thinking "Oh my fucking lord in heaven, I need to see this movie." There is a very special place in my heart for the golden age Looney Tunes shorts, but so, so many reinventions of the brand have been just atrocious (Space Jam sits atop that dark throne), and it's not difficult to see why nobody really cares about those characters anymore. But, damn it – I care. I love those characters. But when you love something, you set your expectations high, and its breaks your heart when they fail.

What made me skeptical about the movie was the property it was attached to: Looney Tunes Cartoons, a series made for HBO Max that debuted in 2020. I watched a few of those cartoons right when they came out, and they disgusted me – the animation was atrocious, the voice acting for everyone who wasn't Eric Bauza was absolutely abhorrent, and the scripts seemed more like a stupid modern cheap-o straight-to-streaming cartoon than anything Looney Tunes-related. But, of course, I wasn't surprised. Looney Tunes has had loads and loads of shit TV series and direct-to-video slop released under its brand, so what was one more? Sigh.

Things got interesting, though, when the reviews started coming out. 94% on Rotten Tomatoes? 9/10 from IGN? What? How could that be? Then, a few months ago, I was listening to an animator podcast where the panel absolutely tore it apart – one of them described the film as the worst thing he'd ever seen. And then, Warner Bros. halted all plans to distribute it domestically, cancelling the American release date! WHAT!!!??? What was going on with this fucking movie? It's LOONEY TUNES! They put hundreds of millions of dollars behind fucking Space Jam 2, but not this!?

I couldn't hold back any longer. I torrented a digital copy of the movie, and on my hard drive it's stayed unwatched – until today. And – and this is coming from someone who hates everything – I loved it. I really loved it. It reminded me why I like Looney Tunes. From the fucking hilarious, unbelievably-absurdist opening credits to the development of the (surprisingly few) characters to the insane, multi-layered plot to the awesome, on-brand climax, I was stuck to the screen.

The premise is very simple: Daffy Duck and Porky Pig are best friends who stumble upon a nefarious alien plan to do... something... involving brainwashing bubble gum. They team up with Petunia Pig, a flavour technician, to defeat the evil alien overlord and save the world. In the meantime, they try to earn enough money to renovate their crumbling house. That's all the plot you'll get – the rest is character relationships and jokes, and god bless for it.

And let's talk about those characters! I wasn't quite sure if Porky and Daffy could carry a movie on their own – shouldn't Bugs be in there, somewhere? And they're using Clampett's screwball version of the Daffster, too – not "You're dethpicable!", but "WOO-HOO! WOO-HOO! WOO-HOO!" Could that really work? By gum, it does! Not only are the two fucking hilarious in everything they do, but the movie hits you upside the head with some unbelievably touching, heart-warming moments between them that nonetheless made me laugh my head off. I was dreading the inevitable "they get angry at each other, then make up" moment, but, while that is present, it leads to some awesome jokes.

The comedy is excellent. It's zany and chaotic without being puerile or sophomoric, which many poor Looney Tunes instalments often are. (There are precisely zero jokes about farting or incontinence, unbelievably.) It's not so much about the writing as it is about the interplay of character delivery and visuals, but, quite frankly, I'm alright with that – we've had smart, talky LT stuff, before, so it's OK for this one to be more focused on letting you see and hear the humour instead of just listening to it.

The villain, in particular, had me in love – I adored just how bombastic and crazy he was. In contrast to, say, the villains from Space Jam, who could have been from any generic cartoon series ever, this one felt very, very Looney Tunes in the way he emoted, sounded, and posed. I'd actually love for this guy to come back in future LT material. (He could be Marvin the Martian's boss! ::winkfelix)

Special attention, I feel, must be placed on the quality of the voice acting – it was really, really good, and I was completely surprised at how engrossed every single character made me, which is something that essentially no 2020s cartoon does. Eric Bauza has really come into this own as a great Looney Tunes voice actor – he does a great Bugs, Daffy, and Porky, and for my money has become the best VA for those characters since Mel Blanc. (PASSIVE-AGGRESSIVE STATEMENT: NOT THAT THAT'S VERY DIFFICULT, THE OTHER ONES HAVE BEEN SHIT!!!!!!!!) Again, the villain had an awesome VA, too, and I loved hearing him theatrically scream and cackle away. Even the female characters sounded excellent – that never happens in comedy cartoons!

Now, if I had one criticism of the movie – and it is a big one – it's that the animation kinda sucks. The artwork, in stills and in backgrounds, is very good! But it has the same problem that the Looney Tunes Cartoon series does: it combines traditional animation with tweening to save money, and paradoxically looks worse than either method on their own. Fifteen years ago, when there was still some skill in the industry, this would have been sub-TV movie quality – now, I guess, this is what passes as the movement in a theatrical film starring the most famous cartoon characters of all time. Go figure! I don't understand how a million bog-standard 3D animated movies can have all the money in the world dedicated to them, but the fucking Looney Tunes get diddly-shit.

daytheearthblewup.jpg

Before I wrap up, one more thing I wanted to mention – the writers, very wisely, kept both internal and external references to a minimum. There are a few little bitty jokes about social media and delivery drivers, but nothing tasteless, and some of them are quite funny. I was also very, very surprised that
Daffy, Porky, and Petunia are the only Looney Tunes characters that appear – Bugs doesn't even get mentioned! I was sure he'd show up in a post-credit scene or as an Easter egg or something, but he doesn't, and neither does any other classic character – it's just those three, and I think the film was better for it. Looney Tunes works better when it's just a few characters bouncing off each other, not when they all have to compete for the limelight.

Without spoiling it, I also just want to say that I really did think the movie's climax was very, very sweet. It's something that shows a lot of love for both the characters featured and the Looney Tunes brand as a whole, and it's one of my favourite moments of the entire series. It's the perfect way to conclude a movie about Looney Tunes, and leads into an absolutely adorable, heartwarming ending. By the time the credits rolled, I just wanted to give these stupid cartoon pigs a big fat hug and a kiss right on their chubby little bums. The reveal of why the movie is called that is also kind of eye-openingly surprising and funny – it's one of those jokes that make me wish I'd wrote it myself. Buggers! ;->

The Day the Earth Blew Up is a wonderful movie for Looney Tunes fans, and I think general audiences who like funny cartoons are going to like it a lot, too. Is it particularly wholesome, enriching, or meaningful? Certainly not. But it is silly, playful, happy, lovely, cute, and, most importantly, and awful lot of fun. If I had to compare it to something, I'd say it's like, oh, I dunno... a good stick of bubble gum. Tasty, chewy, and makes you happy the whole way through. There's no nutrition in it... but it makes you want to grab another piece.

Today I watched The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964)

The plot is very simple but it's very pretty to watch. Like I love the use of color throughout it. Also it's very amusing to me that all the dialogue in it is sung. Like it's not overdramatic musical levels of singing, but it's still amusing to watch.

Highly recommended.

Just remembered to update the little spreadsheet of movies I've seen this year, it's about twenty-five new entries but here's a random smattering!

Bye, Bye, Birdie! (1963)

1741979437572.png
A fictionalized take on Elvis fangirls losing their minds when he was drafted, this one couldn't be more corny. It's the sort of thing that people who hate musicals probably picture when asked about the genre, along with Hello, Dolly! (1964). The opening number isn't sung so much as shouted at the camera, a wailing "BY-YYYEE BYE, BIRD-EEE!" that sets your teeth on edge. (Incidentally, the movie is *probably* best known nowadays for the Family Guy parody of the "What's the story, Morning Glory?" sequence.)

Thing is, it should be more fun; there's a thread in here about sexual awakening and the rush to be an adult, but the teenagers are all written by guys who think they're idiots. The patronizing tone about "those crazy kids" contrasts with something like The Warriors (1979), a movie that embraces the perspective of the young cast instead of judging them. The adults don't come off too much better, with Dick Van Dyke as a struggling songwriter whose too cowed by his mother to marry Psycho's Janet Leigh. In the original stage play, that's chalked up to the mothers racism, but the studio cast Leigh instead of Rita Moreno in the end, so that angle was replaced with "ugh, women."

This was still a huge hit though, and the reason was likely co-lead Ann-Margaret. She's gorgeous, and the movie shows her off *constantly*. The highlight of the whole picture is easily a musical number halfway through the runtime, where her and her new ex-boyfriend try to make each other jealous. Ann-Margaret sings about drinking champagne and moving from boys to men, with a hunger on her face that was probably downright shocking for the time. (Good for her!) It's also just the most gorgeous part of the movie, a sockhop set in a nightclub with fantastic lighting, and the director (George Sidney) gets the most out of the shadows and red highlights.

I dunno if I recommend it to anyone...if you grew up with older relatives watching Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello movies like Beach Blanket Bingo (1965), maybe it'll be nostalgic at least?

Bell, Book and Candle (1958)

The inspiration for TV's Bewitched, here's a pretty weird romantic comedy about witches and love spells gone awry. It's all pretty silly, but Kim Novak and Jimmy Stewart have *so* much chemistry, it's wild. Stewart actually disliked his performance, he turned fifty and felt too old to play the romantic lead anymore. Novak called him her favorite screen partner, however...and I can see why! As a rule, I don't usually enjoy age gaps in movie relationships, but Jimmy Stewart is really something here, the silver fox to her black cat.

Okay today is turning into a bit of a struggle so I'm cutting this short, but I can heartily recommend to anyone who'd like a light-hearted touch of supernatural to their romance.

A small-format, pseudo-biographical production about the American-Mexican wrestler Cassandro....
Pseudo-biographical, because if you watch the film and read about it on wikipedia or wrestling-related sites, there are a lot of things wrong there. Even the origin of his ring name has been changed, and he never wrestled as El Topo (the mole).

Interesting fact - the El Hijo del Santo that Cassandro fights in the film is not any actor or other wrestler dressed as him, but the same El Hijo del Santo that the real Cassandro fought at the time, only 33 years older.
Guy is now 61 and still remains active in ring.

Latin rap star and well-known wrestling fan (with 4 matches in the WWE) Bad Bunny also has a minor role in the film.

I've been watching all the Bond movies in the order they've been released. Tonight I'm going to watch Roger Moore's last film, A View to A Kill. I was in a theater when the movie had just came out. They turned off the movie as a fight broke out in the theater half way through or so.

It was a joke among all my friends as EVERY TIME I would try to watch a James Bond movie some stupid shit would always happen, and I wouldn't be able to finish any movie. "You're gonna be on your death bed, and the last words you're gonna say is I never finished a James Bond movie..." They'd say. I mean look at this shit, it's almost like baby Jesus didn't want me to see any Bond:
*Watching Dr. No on cable, then a damn black out.
*Attempting to watch The Man with the Golden Gun, relatives come over hog the living room and TV.
*Sitting in theater watching A V
*Watching The Living Daylights, cable goes out.
*Trying to watch The World is Not Enough, Girl friend at the time comes over and wants to talk about her feelings. (Ungrateful BITCH!)
The first time I was able to finish a Bond movie was back in 2007 or so when Daniel Craig was in Casino Royal, (ironic being it's supposed to be Bond's first outing) second was the end all No Time to Die.
So weeks ago, I said hell with it, let's watch em all.

Today is Saturday Movie Night, where I watch random movie on a whim.
Today it's Resident Eeeeevil, I wonder why they put Michelle Rodriguez on the front cover, considering she gonna die later on.
