Series You Tried but Just Couldn’t Get Into

Sort of curious of what about MH that pulled you away? It took a few years and several games to get me hooked on to it's loop as well. There's a lot of padding early game to prepare you for the more harrowing late game, to the point where people consider the first ~10-30 hours or so to just be a tutorial. And, yeah, without friends it wouldn't be the same since there's no sort of ally/rival mentality when you're just solo. When I'm with homies I make builds to align and keep up with them, and sometimes want to get ahead of them.

The friendly competition with the gameplay loop of gearing up to take on bigger and far more stressful hunts, the feeling of accomplishment when I've mastered a monster to the point of wearing their whole armor set, contrasted with the calm and relaxing nature of our home village as we prep for our next hunt is what hooked me.
Maybe it is the lack of social aspect when I'm playing solo. But I usually hit a point where I'm not having fun grinding the same missions for better gear, or there'll be a mission that drags on for a bit. It's like, sometimes it'll be frustrating when you get close to beating a boss and they run away, but chasing them down and beating them doesn't make me feel accomplished. It makes me more relieved that the annoyance is over. There's a bit about it overall that feels unsatisfying to me, personally.

Farming games in general. Crafting/base building/survival slop. I can't stand the tedium.

Is Ico part of a series? I think it's connected somehow to those other two games. But it's not very fun. I recently tried to play it again and realised I could dump Yorda for awhile since she's only in danger in select places. That and I had to leave her for awhile to progress anyway and that's why I wasn't progressing in the first place. Then I got to a place where I could not fight the shadows off after multiple tries. Someday I'll go back to it again. Maybe in five more years I'll finally escape. ::sailor-embarrassed

Disgaea: I've actually played every game in the franchise but after 10 or so hours of gameplay I always get bored and end up deleting them.

God of War: I see them as cheap Ninja Gaiden copies, and Kratos is insufferable.

Perfectly understandable, I used to hate running after the monster, too. Kind of still do sometimes. Eventually, though, you actually learn the monsters patterns and can predict where it went. But if the gearing up gameplay is a turnoff for you, then yeah, MH probably isn't for you at all since a lot of the times rare monster drops can be pain.

Is there a series you wanted to try, but ended up not liking—even after trying different entries?

For me, it’s Shin Megami Tensei and Persona. I’m just not a fan of the dark vibes those series have.

That’s all I can think of for now. How about you?
That's funny because I loved the dark vibes of those games but only could ever get into Demikids or the original SMT. Idk, the Persona ones and even the newer SMT titles just seem really weird with the social mechanic. Maybe it's just the antisocial side of me lol 🤷

Hitman: I just don't have the patience to pull off the more creative kills myself, and I enjoy watching other people play these games more than playing them myself.

Monster Hunter: I've tried a couple of times, and the mainline gameplay doesn't really grab me. Maybe if I tried it out with people to play with? ::thinking I love the monster designs, and at least it has the Stories spin-offs of more traditional creature collecting RPGs. Those are more my speed.
You read my mind. I would maybe add Assassin's creed to the list as these jumping on roofs and kill gameplay doesn't feel satisfying to me.

Interesting to see so many Monster Hunter references. As a fan, it is exactly the fact it is a quirky beast (no pun intended) that drew me in; while the social aspect is key, I prefer hunting solo and the fact plot is mostly tacked on instead of being a key point is something I enjoy.

I guess I'm as weird as the games themselves.

For me it's the whole Survival Horror Genré. I tried the first Resident Evil when I was 15 and I was close to shit my pants. After that I only played RE2, cleared it once with Leon and lost Interest in this Series. Since then I've never played any Survival-Horror Game, except the first The last of Us, which I loved.

Then there are: Pokémon, Digimon, Sonic, Monster Hunter, Yakuza (This I will try again), Assassin's Creed, Tomb Raider, Most Sportsgameseries, Kirby, Gears of War, and many more.

One thing i can't really enjoy to play was disgaea even tho i really enjoy tactical RPG. The gameplay was indeed interesting but it's just not my cup of tea.

I have a hard time connecting, with most Squaresoft catalog, too much teen angst, most of their games are too grindy for my taste, and I'm not fond Nomura art direction.
Some Exceptions to these "rules" are Gun Hazard and Front Mission 3

-Assassin's Creed
-GTA
-Any Shooter with conventional war themes

I probably have more but i don't remember more right now 😅
Yeah, if I'm playing a shooting game I prefer it to be something sci-fi like Bioshock or an RPG like Borderlands. Straight up military shooters don't do much for me ::sailor-embarrassed

That would be Ninja Blade, Devil's Third (I am aware Itagaki made that one), and Wanted: Dead. Greek Era GoW started as a Devil May Cry clone. Get it right, ya silly.

There are a few series like this; some might come as a surprise to you, whilst others don't appeal to many people:

Dishonored - I tried the first and second game.
Megaman - Either I'm just not good at this series, or it's too hard. None of the games really caught my interest, and I kept dying over and over again in the very first levels.
Civilization - I tried Civ 3 and 4. REALLY boring strategy.
Hearts of Iron IV - The entry point is definitely too high. I don't have 100 hours to spend learning the basics. I prefer Crusader Kings.
Metroid - In general, I don't like Metroidvania's, maybe with a few exceptions. But I like Metroid Prime.
Castelvania - Like above.
Call of Duty - I used to like COD, but I haven't played it in a long time - specifically, since they started focusing more on multiplayer at the cost of single-player campaigns.
Monster Hunter - They get a bit boring after a dozen or so hours... It’s just a never-ending chase after more and more monsters, just to kill them.
Star Ocean - To be honest, I can't say why. I’ve played Star Ocean: First Departure and Star Ocean: Till the End of Time.
Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons - Also, very boring games for me.

FNAF, I don't understand why those games have many fans... I'm not against the fandom nor I hated the franchise, just I don't like FNAF
Like many indie games that take off, its timing. Indie horror games back then were rare, it was even before the RPGMaker boom. Let’s Players were also at their peak, so you had millions of people watching their favorite creators get scared shitless and the rest is history.
Megaman - Either I'm just not good at this series, or it's too hard. None of the games really caught my interest, and I kept dying over and over again in the very first levels.
The answer is both, they’re very memorization heavy games. Some more than others, I think 10 and 11 are among the easier ones.

Have you tried Einhander, Super Mario RPG, Vagrant Story, Parasite Eve, or Rudra out of curiosity? If not, see if you like them.

Metal Gear Solid
I think I have more fun watching than playing it

Got a few.
  • Horizon (the Sony open world game)
  • Lego
  • Saints row
  • Tales (gameplay-only, the stories are great!)
  • Batman Arkham
  • Xenoverse
  • Inazuma eleven (ONLY the anime, the games are great!)
  • Sword/shield and onwards
There’s a few others but these are just off the top of my head.

What about Origins and Legends. Either of those two tend to get people to enjoy the franchise. I prefer Legends though.
I got about halfway through Legends and just dropped it. That was back when I was drinking all the time though, so now that I'm sober I might actually like it better.

Baldurs Gate, I saw gameplays of Baldurs Gate III and thought, damn, this is insane! So I purchased the first in the series, and man, what a frustrating experience, the easy difficult is too easy and the normal difficult is hard? The game has a good vibes, but I just keeping dying, dying, until I give up.
