Series You Tried but Just Couldn’t Get Into

honestly I've come to realize that I just straight up don't usually like even semi-complicated games. I like platformers, puzzle games, kart racers, whatever-- but once you start factoring in RPG elements or whatever I just completely lose interest. I've never enjoyed the attempts I've made at playing Final Fantasy but I'll blow a whole afternoon on Peggle.

Dark Souls and its likes. I wanted to get into Sekiro, but I couldn't click with it even after several restarts. Couldn't get into Nioh, either, so it isn't just From.

Two come to mind
First is Final Fantasy I just can't do the combat it's so mindless and boring and the story telling is too slow paced.
Second is Dark Souls I've tried to get into it dude I have almost 50 hours in the first game but I just hate it. Bad hit boxes aside the combat isn't bad the problem I have is how much it punishes you for failing when I die in a game I wanna get right back into the action having to grind souls and run all the way back to the boss every time I fail is agonizing

Resident Evil (and really, Survival Horror as a whole). I'm not good at resource management, and I don't like not knowing what's OK to kill, and what I have to leave standing so that my ammo will last through the game.

I tend to dislike soulsborne stuff as well, BUT, I somehow really enjoyed Dark Souls 2. Like, I have this honest to goodness running theme in my life of playing black skeep sequels first and liking them a whole bunch. My first Castlevania and Zelda games were the second games. Loved them. Specifically went out of the way to rent the originals and was.... so confused. But yeah, I did manage to really enjoy DS2. Then DS3 kicked my teeth in and the lesson was learned.

I think what irks me the most is the overuse of huge bosses with long arms who did big swooping attacks and all have aggravating delay animations for those attacks. they get my blood pressure up, and I'm at that age where the second that happens, no, I'm good. Moving on.

Telltale games or those "Heavy rain-like" interactive movies (Sure they have an actual name, but forgor at the time) games, narrative driven games are cool, but unless it is for reading, my lifespan ranges from "Fly" to "carrot" so i get lost if i am not actually playing, usually i prefer Visual novels for narrative games

Same, though my older brother can't get enough of this stuff.

I was just thinking of games like this since I'm playing Mixtape and it's very much an interactive movie. I feel like this style of games really peaked with the first Walking Dead and Life is Strange.

Kingdom Hearts, all the times i tried i get bored, one day i try again
Oh man, I played the demo for Dream Drop Distance as a child but I never really touched the series beyond that. I liked it though, but with how pricey some 3DS games were starting to become, I never ended up getting the full version.

Tried to get into Disgaea, I'm a huge fan of tactical rpgs but that one just didn't click, it has some very weird systems and the story and characters didn't grab me at all, it might be a good series but not for me unfortunately
I've been meaning to play it for some time, but my indecisive ass keeps flipping between the OG DS version of 1 or the PC version...And then I end up just never playing it because of my dummy brain lol.

Final Fantasy. I've tried a few of them, both early and newer, but I just can't get invested in them. Same goes for Dragon Quest.
Admittedly I've played a few spinoffs that are so removed from the main series (TheaterRhythm) but I never really got around to FF either...I also feel like the fanbase sort of reminded me of Pokemon's with the whole "gen war" stuff, the whole "_ is better than _" and people shitting on certain games which was something that actually drove me away, as I already saw that with Pokemon and FF fans seemed just as bad. I know some people probably feel this way about PKMN which I completely get, but I hope it's a different case for FF now.

Animal Crossing, I really love the Harvest Moon games and thought well, it's a cozy game and life sim, right up my alley; But I just couldn't get into any of the games for some reason, and I really wanted to, they look fun but just don't click with me.
I liked playing it, but I played New Leaf a bit too late; I was interested in the game in middle school, but never got it until I homebrewed my 3DS in my last year of school. And I ended up having to drop the game because I got so busy, and I do feel a little discouraged since Horizons has been out for a long while now, although I see people saying they miss ACNL. Maybe we can get a little New Leaf group going on here...?

FNAF, I don't understand why those games have many fans... I'm not against the fandom nor I hated the franchise, just I don't like FNAF
Honestly I FEEL you on this one. I downloaded the first FNAF the same year it came out, and I couldn't understand the appeal for the life of me. It sucks because the younger group really loves FNAF and the fandom was part of their life, but I can't even relate lol...I guess there's a real gap right there. I don't hate it either, I tried to like it to relate to them but I just can't. :c

Persona, I can't stand the heavy devil references and the dark theme, KH I think I played the psp title but didn't feel the need to play more, Carnage Heart EXA on psp same words of the other user, I would like to play it but it's really complicated for me!
Like someone else I'm the opposite 😆 I liked the religious references in Megaten games, I think it's because it makes the game feel like there's more of a connection to the real world, since most of us know the basic stuff about mythology, religion, etc. Idk how to describe it, I liked Persona when I was more of a chuuni, so it was probably more enjoyable since I was the intended audience of something, idk.

Monster Hunter. I just don't get the appeal. The action seems really good but there just isn't anything there to keep me coming back.
I tried super hard to get into MH; in 2018 I borrowed MH4U from a friend and I didn't really like it that much. And then in 2020, I downloaded MH3U and I almost got into it, but I think the beginning is slow and yeah, playing some entries alone might mean I'm doing it wrong idk. And lastly I did try Generations and same thing, just couldn't get into it. I do feel like I've love Stories though, so I'll give that game a shot and maybe I'll finally get into MH (I'm not giving up lol).

League of Legends (Whole Franchise)
This too. I can't bring myself to get into LOL at all, my younger sibling plays MOBAs and I really....don't like them. I don't like having to VC and all that. I'm sure LOL isn't that toxic with the right friend group or whatever but I really am not interested in MOBA games at all, even my older sibling stopped playing them because sometimes playing them with a bad friend group can....sour things. Anyways, to each their own. LOL has a show and a fighting game now, so more power to people who enjoy it.

(also sorry for the post formatting, I couldn't move text above the first quote box D:)

I know this is not on topic, but I really can't get into games that have too many special effects/particle effects because sometimes i can't see anything besides flashing lights; FFVII Remake and Rebirth comes to mind, I would've liked the combat more if there was a way to turn down or even turn off all those special effects.

Kingdom Hearts, i get claiming this is dead horse beating, but the plot makes so little sense and is a mangled mess that makes X Files planned from the beginning, gameplay is fine i guess but if to grasp the plot i need to invest in like hundred consoles to play say a Nonogram game that turns out to have the revelation that turns the plot upside down i pass, that said i kind of liked 1, CoM and 2

Final Fantasy, I just have zero interest. I tried but I just can’t. Some of the characters are cool but my mind just drifted off while playing, it was boring to me.

Mega Man, the only outlier of this is Command Mission, and I love that game a lot so maybe I didn't need anything else from the franchise anyway?

I was bullied in to starting the Legend of Heroes series from Trails. It was a mistake, because it set expectations. They were far from perfect, but I still really liked them. The dip in writing quality and pandering in the series from Cold Steel and onwards was enough for me to turn it from some of my favorite JRPG games to games I just outright don't play.

I feel like I've made a lot of enemies today.
Maybe you made enemies from the die-hard Trails fans, but you've gotten an ally in me about your feelings of it. Sky was something beautiful, The Crossbell games started amazing but Trails to Azure really started to concern me with those writing tropes. Then the Cold Steel games started to disrespect the amazing writing that used to come, and outright converted it into something that feels like dangling a carrot on the stick for an audience they didn't have beforehand. Cold Steel IV is a game that just made me disillusioned, and broke one last and final sigh before I dropped it due to feeling completely disrespected.

Is there a series you wanted to try, but ended up not liking—even after trying different entries?

For me, it’s Shin Megami Tensei and Persona. I’m just not a fan of the dark vibes those series have.

That’s all I can think of for now. How abou
The furthest I got was the final boss in Persona 3: it didn't even help to try hard because the academic calendar doesn't allow you to farm XP infinitely (and my build was too bad).

If I have to go through this again in other SMTs, I'd rather just leave it at that.

Collecting creatures and battling professionally was the least appealing aspect for me, but I finished Fire Red so people wouldn't say I didn't finish any.

P.S: the only reason I bought a DS was to play Resident Evil 1 anywhere.

My problem with MH is crafting lottery (the loot dropped by target is only revealed at the end of quest) and lack of narrative depth (the bosses are irrational beasts with no personality or background).

I switched to Dark Souls without hesitation.
