This is a actually a very fun game. Obviously inspired by Super Mario Brothers but I really liked it.
It's ridicilus that Nintendo originally made Rainbow Arts pull it off shelves because it was too similar to Mario when that couldn't be further from the truth. I grew up on Giana Sisters and Hard 'n Heavy and Giana Sisters and Mario are similar but not so much that they'd step on each other's toes.
- Level design is completely different.
- The physics have absolutely nothing to do with Mario's.
- The power ups and power downs work differently.
- You have 3 levels of fireball, the first one has less control and just kinda bounces randomly, second one is more focused and the 3rd one is a homing fireball which tracks and kills enemies regardless of where they are...that or it gets stuck on an unkillable bad guy :)
- Giana sisters is generally easier than Mario, has a more floaty jump but due its level design it may appear more difficult as in typical Euro-platformer fashion it uses tight spaces and cielings/platforms above the protagonist to ramp up the challenge which is just awful.
Another interesting note about Giana Sisters, at least the C64 version I grew up with NOBODY ever mentions, the game has a form of "parallax scrolling". The clouds in the outdoor levels move slower compared to the rest of the environment.
After that tho, Hard 'n Heavy, my absolute favorite old C64 game, has some very neat parallax actually.
sorry I couldn't resist but nerd out, I love Giana Sisters and Hard 'n Heavy too much :)
