I dont know if many people will remember, but back in the day there was this big platform called Xfire, that was a big platform for gamers:
- Join groups
- Record video, made screenshots to then upload them to the site for you friends to see
- Navigate servers
- And my favorite: track gaming time so you can have a cool signature on your forums:
(Dont shame me on my time, I just realize it is back online)
Ofc other features like: chat, join friends match/server, voice chat, etc where also a big highlight of the platform. Stuff that even current platforms doesnt do today!
Sadly the platform would close in around 2015, leaving us to only main social platforms that do half of what Xfire did. Even if I take forums like this as a main 'social platform' I think other platforms like Xfire complemented it in a really good way by letting people hows their content (photos videos), see server, share its tracking time and just know if someone is playing something right now. So it is a damn shame that it servers down.
But thankfully this is not the full story: a group of fans bring the website up again with the blessing of some of devs and it is (almost) fully functional as you can see right here:
Xf1re - Gaming Community & Stats
Track your gaming activity, chat with friends, browse servers and screenshots on Xf1re.
With the app working and now that it is community managed, it can now add more stuff. Like emulators! I know many people here use more Zsnes than native windows programs or maybe PCSX2. Well they are already implemented so you can just download Xf1re, create an account and link it! You can see the list of emulators here:
As for a more complete list, these are all the games compatible:
Xf1re - Gaming Community & Stats
Track your gaming activity, chat with friends, browse servers and screenshots on Xf1re.
Missing one? Creating entries is really dont that hard. Im myself creating one right now with the help of some of the devs for an old obscure game that I like (ProPilot 99), so the catalog is still increasing.
So yeah, I really think it is a cool neat project that is worth at least a try. Some people say that is 'looking at the past' too much or only nostalgia, but I refuse, looking back the platform was way ahead of its time, so why no giving it a try now?
Thanks for reading!
