My best Saturn game of all time by far :D

i can't tell if it has been posted elswhere on here, but i liked bumping into this article on bluesky the other day: https://www.pastemagazine.com/games/sega/12-sega-saturn-games-that-need-to-be-re-released

a couple here i had never heard of--Shinrei Jusatsushi Tarōmaru for example sounds super interesting! this article also got me to boot up Bulk Slash this morning, which I am loving
whoa, I already like many titles on the Saturn, and got many recommendations from friends and such for games to have in my digital collection, but there's some gems here that I hadn't even considered yet! thanks for sharing

Playing Panzer Dragoon Saga rn.
It´s one of the best games I have ever played.
Right there with you right now.

Named my dragon off the best Dragoon from another RPG series…

Back around 1996 or so, I got a chance to play on a Saturn that a buddy of my oldest brother allowed me to borrow for a week (I was rather young). I don't have many memories of the games I played, but I do remember playing Panzer Dragoon and flying around in the sky. I regretted never playing it much, but I always thought the 3D pad was so cool.

Fast forward to about 2018 and I obtained a Saturn of my own and really started to dive deep into the library the Saturn offered. I always knew that the Saturn failed super hard in the USA, and was gone in a blip (same with the Dreamcasts, but I was able to get one of those a few years after it came out for my birthday, at least), so I never had much experience beyond the little bit I played when I was much younger.

The Saturn library, imho, is one of the most underrated home console libraries of any console I've played thus far, and there are a TON of absolute BANGERS on it, as well. Arcade perfect ports (which is a big deal, especially for the shmups like Batsugun, DonPachi, and DoDonPachi), and quirky, yet interesting and unique games that are still only on the Saturn.

Currently, I have mine installed with a Fenrir ODE (the still working optical drive is safely put away because those suckers are actually the main reason why Saturn consoles cost so much second hand) with a bunch of games on the sd card. One of my goals once I get another job is to actually sit down and finally play Grandia, as well as grinding out Batsugun since I need to get better at shmups again. All on a 32" Sony CRT.

I'm still debating whether to get an S-video cable from Insurrection Industries for dat crispness (since I play my PS2 and Wii with component cables on it as well), or keep using Composite since I do like the idea of playing games as close to how they were when released. The dithering techniques used on the Saturn is quite interesting, and I really do love the effects, personally.

The Sega Saturn has an amazing library with a lot of sleeper hits, and it's no wonder that it lasted so long in Japan, while having over 1100 games made on it.

But don't get S-Video cables, use SCART, they are superior. I think I only played Famicom and Super Famicom with composite cable because I was very young and I didnt know anything about modding, but the rest of the consoles, specially starting from PS1, everything was SCART.

I remember buying my first PS1 and keeping it a day without using it until I got the SCART cable. It is like night and day in comparison with the one that comes with the console.

Get tons of SCART cables from Aliexpress, I've got for Saturn, PS1/PS2, Dreamcast and Gamecube and all of them work very good. I remember buying one cable like 15 years ago, but it was horrible, I had to solder a capacitor to make it true SCART, it was very low quality, but 3 times cheaper in comparison to the cables I could get at stores at that time.

Saturn collection check!!

(This is my current collection as of today. Everything here I’ve gotten since February 20th. I don’t have a super high paying job. I’m telling you: collecting for Saturn is not impossible. Also, it’s so crazy how much you can tell that I’m an American collecting for Saturn with my game choices lol)

So, I found a GameFAQs thread of Panzer Dragoon cheats after hearing PD cheats casually mentioned in the Virtua Fighter Legacy forums.

The list includes things such as a dragon only mode and a Space Harrier mode. No other descriptions given.
Panzer Dragoon Cheats - GameFAQs
Can somebody try these? As I find this, I’m moving, so I won’t be able to try it on my own system until Friday. I especially want to know what Space Harrier mode is. Is it a port of the game? Is it a model of the main character from Space Harrier? Is it simply the dragon staying still while strafing? I have to know what it does.

Panzer Dragoon wasn't by AM2 but it wouldn't surprise me if Sega hid an Easter egg like that. Maybe it just means how it controls like when it stays in the center of the screen and you move outward with the stick and it always returns to the center when you release it? I haven't tried the code myself so who knows what Space Harrier mode is?

the statue at the top of the waterfall peeing into the same water you were just swimming in will always make me laugh.

I think it´s just the same game without the dragon

Was this logotype only used in japan? The worldwide one looks horrible in comparison, perhaps american markets were deemed too sensitive for the red satanic S lol

Yup. The US and Europe got the same logo - tho our boxes used a black spine rather than a white one which just fit how the Saturn was sold outside Japan (all black and dark grey)

Heres the EU and US Sonic Jam box arts to compare that (tho the EU boxes were a real shitty mix of crummy plastic and cardboard which fell apart even at the time so we absolutely had that worse off)

Is nice to see so many translations to Sega Saturn games even if I mostly end playing Nights and Earth Worm Jim 2.
