Saturn Saturn appreciation thread

Haha. Here are a few cool Japanese Saturn games I have (I will get better pictures later). Super Tempo in particular is one of my favorite 2-d platformers. I want to write some Saturn articles on this website.

I should have known you would have most of the most expensive Saturn games with your name being “TryRushDeppy3”.
Actually prothetic.

I gotta know: how fun is Super Tempo? As a game, it’s the one I want the most from the expensive JP library.

Everyone has different tastes and concerns, but for me Super Tempo is very fun, though I am quite lenient when it comes to video games (I enjoy a lot of "bad" games basically, but I don't consider Super Tempo bad, I just know my taste is often not in line with others). Charming as mentioned above (I can't figure out the quotes on the forum yet) is definitely the word to describe Super Tempo. The sprite-work is top quality, something to behold. I want to write an article on this site about Tempo, Super Tempo, the PC Genjin/Bonk and Zonk/PC Denjin game series and the relationship between them (Red Company, Keisuke Abe, etc) to better explain myself haha.

I loved the Bonk game I played! Super Genjin was what I had and while it may be easy for some crack YouTuber to make fun of how weird it is, the game was a weird and charming adventure with well designed levels and a lax difficulty level that made it a good game to calm down to. I don’t know if I want to take the plunge into the PC-Engine, but if I ever did, I would start with Genjin.

Also, to quote people, you can either hit the reply button or, if you want to quote multiple people, you can hit the quote button to add messages to an “inventory” of sorts. When writing your next message, you can access all the quoted messages and insert them at your own discretion.

I will try to quote now

Oh, excellent. Test. Thanks for the help.

i can't tell if it has been posted elswhere on here, but i liked bumping into this article on bluesky the other day: https://www.pastemagazine.com/games/sega/12-sega-saturn-games-that-need-to-be-re-released

a couple here i had never heard of--Shinrei Jusatsushi Tarōmaru for example sounds super interesting! this article also got me to boot up Bulk Slash this morning, which I am loving
Nanatsu Kaze is on that list, and in fact that is the first Saturn game article I am trying to post here (I put it in the Guild Application thread, if I did it correctly). Hopefully it will get approved, because I have a lot of info about this game I'd like to share.

Here is my Nanatsu Kaze collection:

Since the PS2 was a gift I received as a child, the Saturn has been the only home console (play on PC or handheld) I've ever bought without regret. It was worth every penny.

Several years ago, I tried out a few games. My favorites:
-Baku Baku Animal.
-Guardian Heroes.
-Keio 2.
-Cotton 2.
-Super Tempo.
-Tryrush Deepy.
-Daytona Usa.
-Shinrei Jujatsu Taroumaru.
-Clock Knights 2.
-Out Run.
-Panzer Dragoon 2.
-Nights into Dreams.
-Saturn Bomberman.
-Sakura Wars.

I have Dragon Force, Shining Force 3, Panzer Dragoon Saga and Shining Holy Ark pending.

Thanks. By notebook I think you are talking about the "Ganapa's Hand" book (understandable since it is "Ganapa No Te" which looks like Ganapa Note haha). That is an illustrated book drawn by the creator and director of Nanatsu Kaze, Keita Amemiya (best known for his tokusatsu sfx work) from the year 2000 which features characters that appeared in Nanatsu Kaze. Here is an example page I photographed:

Well, the thing that immediately captured my interest about Nanatsu Kaze was the beautiful sprite work that really showcases the Saturn's abilities, but once I realized it was the brainchild of Amemiya (whose work I enjoyed since seeing his Zeiram monster) and played it, I was hooked. It is a very relaxing game, with some darker undertones that give it a nice balance of creepy and calm. I will explain more if my article gets approved haha. Thanks for your interest.

Yesterday I could finally set Mednafen to work and I'm doing a dive through Saturn's games. I started with Nights Into Dreams which I never played before and I have a lot to say.

First of all, I would say that playing Saturn nowadays is a magical experience, even when emulating it and not playing in the traditional way. Saturn is a console that brought me the experience and energy of the 90s, even though I didn't live through that era. I felt all the aesthetics of that era in my few hours of gameplay, and even when emulating it I felt like I was playing on the home console (thanks Mednafen for being a great emulator). I also tested other games to pass the time like Asuka 120 Limited and I can say that the experience was the same.

Do you have similar thoughts about this console? I still plan on playing a lot of games on it, so feel free to recommend games to me if you want. In my opinion, Saturn is a console that should be more valued even today. I wish there were more emulators for it, even though it is one of the most difficult consoles to emulate due to its 8 cores. I believe in its potential to revive memories and the spirit of the 90s.
I love the Sega Saturn had mine since 2017 and got about 16 games for it total now I think , the first game I played on it was Daytona USA pretty sure but I also had the 2 bundle games Virtual Fighter 2 and Virtuacop plus a Saturn Sampler Demo Disc ; I've really loved diving into the Saturn's library seems like I'm always finding new games for it that i didn't know about previously which is good💙 I think my favorite game I played would probably be Azel Panzer Dragoon RPG "Japanese ver of PanzerDragoon Saga" but there's soooo many more games I've enjoyed playing on Saturn for example Wipeout USA Game and Wipeout 2097 European game, Magical Hoppers "Japanese ver of Pandemonium" I usually like to try out all regions of Saturn games if I can and thanks to my Action Replay I'm able to do that

Sonic_R (1).jpg

I'm not gonna sit here and tell you Sonic R is a great game... But I will say I have been playing it annually as a comfort game every first snowfall and is one of my favorite pastime games. There are so many things it could do better, but it has a charm that I personally just can't get past. The gameplay is easy, the characters all act like you expect and you can unlock all characters and levels in less than a hour. BUT THE SOUNDTRACK SLAPS! I was going to recommend Sonic 3D Blast as well but I saw someone already had.

Ganapa No Te is exactly why i thought it was a notebook lmao my bad! seriously amazing art, i can see the creepy and calm both in this pic

One of the game's I recently played on it that I liked was Cleopatra Fortune. I do like that its objective is unique to other puzzle games and not just a game that reuses other games formulas. I will say the down right cuteness of Petrako did draw me to it though.

The reason I bought a Sega Saturn back in February of 2013, is that I was disappointed in the PC version of Baku Baku Animal that I found. That version didn't let you continue, and STV emulation would have no sound in MAME.

I've only had a small bit of experience with the Saturn, I bought a Japanese console with Virtua Fighter 2 and Puyo Puyo Sun but my 60hz crt decided to break just as it arrived. Regardless I loved what small time I got to play it for, but the thing that really sticks with me is just how good the box art for games are on the Saturn, I just love the Japanese branding for the console.

JP Saturn art is all about decadence. Panzer Dragoon is probably the best one.

I recommend that you pick up a cable for a monitor in the meantime so you can continue gaming! VF 2 sauce is no joke how fun it is, and I’d compare the flow of that game to fencing with how you get in and then retreat to avoid any counter attack, then go back in for more.

I've considered doing so to make sure my Saturn (and Famicom) don't catch anymore dust and I have an excuse to keep collecting for those systems but I'm lookin into getting my 60hz CRT fixed up (I have my old 50hz layin about but obviously my NTSC systems won't run on that) so I'll probably be waiting on that.

The SEGA Saturn and Dreamcast are the last two major systems to stem from the old way of doing things.

Arcade games, with strong core gameplay loops and some scattered secrets here and there, were the backbone. The console experience was about “bringing the arcade home”. To compliment that, games with more meat often came in the form of adventure or strategy games. The other titles in the library would fill out other genres, but this is often how SEGA did things.

While detrimental at the time, many gamers are growing older. With families and responsibilities, it’s nice to have games that can offer you a strong slice of fun in only an hour or less. Since this style has largely been abandoned by the industry, even many indies, the Saturn stands out because it was kinda the ultimate system for this idea of what gaming could be. It still won’t appeal to everyone and the system is still very niche, but it’s good to see how age has been kind to the Saturn.

(also both Dreamcast and Saturn radiate a particular era in Japanese gaming history, so that helps them too. But only one of them has a controller I actually want to hold and isn’t at risk of exploding by simply putting a disk in it, so I know which one I prefer.)

Yeah! And aside from original titles like NiGHTS having much more arcade-esque design, the Saturn was a powerhouse of arcade game ports (as was the Dreamcast after)

Aside from SEGA's own arcade games which of course remained exclusive: Virtual-On, Die Hard Arcade, House of The Dead and all their fighters - Capcom arguably supported the Saturn the most with what were probably the best arcade to console ports of the era (outside of owning a NEOGEO) and X-Men Vs Street Fighter sticks out to me the most since with the 4MB RAM Cartridge its a full featured version of the game - whereas the PlayStation version released worldwide had to cut the 2v2 gameplay that XvsSF was notable for. Many fighting game ports of the time had to cut FAR more corners on PlayStation than on Saturn.
