RGT Nostalgia Society #2 - Vagrant Story

to be fair, the boss that unlocks teleportation doesn't seem reasonably close to a magic circle
Bosses being too far from a circle/workshop has been a common thread during my playthrough so far tbh. At least now I can probably get back on with the rest of the story now.

I cannot believe I literally forgot I could teleport ::bonzistares

Well after getting lost another two times, remembering I hadn't done the iron maiden yet, then finding a bunch of stuff in dungeons id missed, I've finally gotten back on track.

How is everyone else getting on? I've fought so many dragons and elementals that they're starting to blur together.

I also need to be waaaaay more thorough with these maps. I've missed so much shit that I needed to go back for.

I just got into the city. After learning you cannot chain the same skill things are starting to go smoother. This video was a great help

Yeah I had a bunch of issues until I looked up a few guides on builds and mechanics.

NGL I've also had to look up the solution to a couple of the block puzzles.

Currently at the cathedral entrance but I'm taking some time out to sort my weapons before i try to tackle much of it. I've heard the fights from now on get trickier again.

Wow, Vagrant Story seems to be a really popular game compared to Parasite Eve. Really happy to see how much attention this is getting!

I've been a little busy irl, but I've got some annual leave coming up next week. I'll be off for a week and will tackle the game then. Really got discouraged when I saw that this game is super difficult to play blind, I wasn't aware of that when I originally nominated it. Has anyone been following a guide that's relatively easy to follow that covers all optional content that they'd recommend? I don't have the time to play a game circled around obscure oldschool trial and error anymore.

Thank you for nominating this gem. This is one of my favorite RPGs on the PS1. I never beat it as a kid and 2023 was the first time I beat it. I used a combination of guides from Gamefaqs.

One of the things they won't help with in my opinion are boss battles. They give you stats of the enemies you fight, but that doesn't help when you're like "I have an edged weapon with +30 dragon killing power let's go wallop this Wyvern...oh shit why am I only doing 1-4 damage? Shit my weapon is Air element nor physical." It's a micromanage equipment heavy game.

If you're only going for 1 playthrough there isn't a whole lot in terms of "optional content" unless you're going to farm magic. Which you don't need to do unless you want more attack magics.

Welcome to LΓ©a Monde friend

Yeah, I know the game. I would also say the day Square Enix produced it was a good day because it turned out really well. It was very challenging because each monster always needed a special weapon to defeat it. I can still remember I always had problems with this spirit that could only be defeated with elemental weapons. Yes a very good game with a very good story.

I'm in the home stretch at this point but this final dungeons is brutal.

I've found a few guides for farming decent weapons to defeat a few of the harder bosses towards the end, but I don't see myself getting past any of the lead-up bosses for a while with my current weapons lol

I totally understand that. I just beat the Wyvern in the Abandoned Mine 1 and the fight took me 45 minutes because I was using an Iron Axe with Air element. Used all my Vera Items. And I hadn't saved for like 2 hours so I had to try. Finally bear him, now I have to work on getting Hagane weapons

Golden Hint: After using the Analyse spell you have to open the Status screen to check the enemy's weaknesses.
Yeah this had me fucked up for a fair while until I googled it.

Honestly with bosses I mostly rely on guides with stats because it saves me going into a boss, realising I am not well-specced and then having to go back to a workshop or whatever.

I still don't have any good dragon killers. I just keep healing with a strong light affinity weapon, sheathing it for faster MP regen, and reflecting bites and tail attacks until the boss is dead.

I didn't either really, I had a axe that I used to kill some Lizard Men and put the dragonslayer gem in it which gave me a total of 30 affinity for dragons. Which still netted me a whopping 1-4 damage because it was air affinity. so I basically did the same thing, but all it did was physical attack me so I was able to tank the damage pretty well. But I hadn't saved prior so I was stuck.

Thats always the issue. You get locked into a 30 minute fight after not hitting a magic circle and you reeeeally don't wanna have to do it again.

I'll say that it makes the home stretch of any given fight intense as hell.

Tempted to transfer my save off my vita and onto my real PS1 memory card so I can finish the game off on real hardware ::thinking

Are save states cheating?
Sort of a subjective question. Personally, I've relied on save states once or twice for annoying block puzzles where I didn't want to have to redo the puzzle because I fucked up the platforming.

As long as you're not giving yourself OP stats or spawning in weapons I wouldn't let it bother you.

Mostly a "go back" button before passing through an unknown door and stopping myself from dying to one mistake in the troll fight.

Yeah I'd say that's fine. This game has been great but I also feel like the hardware limitations meant its missing some key QoL features ::eggmanlaugh

This would be my answer. I am however doing the Retroachievements Hardcore so I can't use Save States.

Man no idea how tf it happened, but my Phantom killing dagger has a 50 fire element and I went and tried to fight the Flame Elemental. Things didn't go so well

YESS!! Thank you for reminding me on this one, I downloaded it from the playstation store for my vita and had just started it when the battery decided to hold enough charge to be as full as a cup with no bottom. I have been meaning to play it but I'm too scared to play battery replacement surgery on my vita since you have to attach two wires as well and I can't work under that kind of pressure.

Unless you are doing a speedrun or something, I say no. I use ss all the time to save time and sanity: it's the same as resetting and trying again, imo.

Now that said, I am probably going to have to legit cheat (duckstation max damage) for this fucking game. I got stuck on this fucker since I last posted

so been taking a break and playing a game that doesn't piss me off. And a fucking time limit? I guess the idea is if you can't beat it fast enough, to keep whacking away on it to grind up your anti ghost weapon affinity or however this system works? So the game is trying to help you? Who's got time for that O_o If this game is a grind fest, I'm gonna go ahead and turn on max damage now and just give Sydney a 999 damage crossbow bolt up his ass.

Finished the Snowfly Forest today. I must have being lost there for ages when I played it in highschool cuz I still remember the name of some roomsπŸ˜…
