The file size is due to the music files on mp3. The actual game is 8MB. To play this on retroarch you have to use the core included, a modified genesis plus core, else the game will play a fake low res "mockup". So go to your retroarch cores folder, backup and delete your genesis_plus_gx_libretro.dll and replace it with the one included with the game. After that just load content and find the game .bin.

Download from Repo

Here's some .so files see if you can use them? ⬇️
I've tested the .so files on my android device, didn't work. None of them from what I could tell are compiled for ARM64, which is needed for Android support? The linux one is for x86 linux.

As usual, this place is way behind on things.
The upload in the main post is several versions behind.

Here's the latest core https://github.com/RapidEdwin08/Genesis-Plus-GX-Expanded-Rom-Size
You'll have to manually set up msys2 for Windows to get your 64bit .dll core file, or compile on another platform of your choosing (Linux PC, Linux Pi4-5, Android), no precompiled version is available on the github.

I attached the 07-07 build here, including an info file (unique core name, no need to rename anything, works alongside normal genplusgx:

I will update the Repo entry once I confirm this version of the core doesn't crash on the first screen of the Police HQ.

I get the jist of this game, but I honestly don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Made sure retroarch is fully updated

Tried multiple versions of the core

Always freezes on the police HQ route. Someone even said it might be the game itself rather then the emulation?!

i mean... it's cool that this game finally got reverse engineered and people can play it. seemed like a promising game during its kickstarter campaign. but damn, the hit boxes and animations are absolutely terrible in this game. it looks quite repeititve and mediocre all things considered. certainly did not live up to the hype.

I don't remember exactly the technical side of the thing, but basically it's another chip inside the cardridge that's carrying the game on the Genesis. Not impressive, that's cheating.

I didn't have any prejudices against the game, but after trying 10 min, I just turned it off, the gameplay feels so crappy, the AI sucks. It just feels like a street of rage ripoff meme.

You are wrong. Actually the game is carried by gen/md hardware. Extra chips are responsible for decompression of music data (around 2MB) and extra channels.

Also what do you need from AI in a beat'em up game? It is not like it should be like in fighting games. It is not Street Fighter.
Gameplay is similar to SoR3 and Golden Axe 3 as Fonzie likes them. And they were not crappy at all.

I haven't played this beat em' up game but it's a game that graphically and technically squeeze the most of the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis and it seems like you're playing a Neo-Geo game than a Genesis game so it's very impressive to be honest.

the on in the download is a .dll file

i deleted the original genesis plus gx core and draged the core with the .dll ending in my cores folder
my retroarch wont show up a genesis plus gx core anymore...

i think there is a difference between retroarch windows and retroarch android
im on android and yea...wont work :/

As darthvaderx mentioned, there is another archive with an updated version of modified core. It comes with source code and pre-compiled binaries for Windows (x86 & x86_64), Linux (x86_64), macOS (Intel and Apple silicon), amd R36S (ArkOS). I extracted the updated cores from this archive and uploaded them here: https://www.mediafire.com/file/qbmcga5i9470ssp/Paprium_Updated_RetroArch_Core.zip/file

The game rom & mp3 from this archive are the same as the one posted here except there is an extra "paprium.wav" file (It's a bunch of random sound effects. Pretty sure the original uploader forgot to remove it).

Did you replace that core with the one provided?
They both have the same name, but the one in the download is modified to run this.

same...but with the right core via retroarch (android) called: Genesis Plus GX

Just like the original cart, the first time you boot the rom, you'll see the "simple" game after the language selection screen. Restart the core and it will then boot into the true game.

It expects the file structure to be intact when you load it. At least that's how it worked for me.

Edit: Replacing the RA core with the one from the Repo area of the forum rather than the one in the Repo itself seems to have done the trick. It might have been a fluke so it will require another run.

It's most likely an AP check of some sort. It's far too consistent to be an emulation issue.

Whelp, I got the crash near the beginning of the HQ level too. It was nice to at least be able to finally play the damn thing however.

Hopefully a core that works around the crash will be out soon for platforms other than just Linux. All the better if they get around to fixing the graphical glitches too.

Re: the mp3 files: I was wondering if maybe they couldn't properly dump the music because of the encrypted labyrinth of chips or something. Since the fart noises are still present in the music, it almost seems like someone recorded the game running on a Genesis. The 'round over' fanfare loops awkwardly, too, which I can't imagine the devs being onboard with.

I dunno, the music is decent for coming from a console, but not real-music-that-demands-MP3 good.

Edit: semi-confirmed below, yeah.

Same on Android, does not work with RetroArch I'm tried "so64" and "rs36s" cores on RetroArch (Because different Architecture ARM64/AARCH64)
rebuilding from the stratch will be needed also someone make sonic mania plus run through apk it is unofficial and also zelda harkinian version it is possible.. it ran smoothly with some lag.

ported from pc i guess i need to wait for someone to make it for android
