I enjoyed the Twilight books. The movies are pretty bad, though.
Stephenie Meyer's prose isn't quite there and some other things are also severely lacking, but whenever I read the books I get transported into this little town, hidden between trees, and I just get nostalgic. I relate to Bella to a great extent, considering I also grew up in a small town, divorce, dad stayed, I left with my mom and then her new bf, never had any friends, etc., etc.. I know that this isn't really unique, but it does speak to me.

And I'm a sucker for unconditional love stories. Sue me. TEAM EDWARD!!!

Contemporary fantasy fiction (mostly in literature) is too obsessed with worldbuilding and lore, and an author that focuses too much on it muddles their stories by not letting the world unravel organically for the reader. This is a trend currently in fantasy, because fans love dissecting the nitty-gritty, which is fine, but when it’s too much of it and too little story, the story itself takes second place and that’s just not fun.

Sword-and-Sorcery is a better fantasy genre overall because it’s (mostly) about moment-to-moment adventure, which makes for a much funner and more exciting read in general, and I wish that kind of pulpy, sincere storytelling would make a comeback. I implore anyone who is sick of high fantasy to read Conan. It really is as good as they say.

I've talked about this with my friends a lot in the past but I love the way you phrase it. Usually when I think about it, it comes up in the context of western RPGs vs JRPGs. Western RPGs tend to focus heavily on spelling out every facet of the lore in excruciating detail. Everything tries to be grounded and logical and it almost feels like a weird response to pedants on social media or Youtube that try to "plothole ding" everything. JRPGs on the other hand usually tend to leave large chunks of the world and its mechanics unexplored, allowing people to fill in the blanks and speculate alone or with others. I kind of love that because it allows your worlds to be more fantastical and in general, I'm a bit of a sucker for fanfic/fan theory discussion.

I doubt that my internal framing of "west vs Japan" is fair because examples of both light and "heavy" worldbuilding exist in both regions, but it's just what I've anecdotally noticed. I'm sure there is some interesting stuff to dig into on a cultural history level to explain why such a distinction exists, if it does. There are pros and cons to both ways of doing things though and some of my favorite stories come from both styles of storytelling. Sometimes it is nice to just let the audience's mind fill in the blanks and suspend their disbelief a bit while the writers focus on fleshing out other aspects of the work.

This is also extra interesting because I kind of come from the angle of someone who doesn’t care very much for fan theories.

Not that I’m against it or anything like that, I just personally like looking at stories ”as is” and don’t tend to worry too much about the details if they’re not there (aside from some exceptions of course) because too much fan speculating can prove to be quite exhausting, but in a different way than the ”official super dense worldbuilding” :)

The fact that streaming services release entire seasons at once flat out hurts the products they are trying to deliver by eliminating all speculation and doing away with any possible curveballs before they can even be thrown. That's why so many otherwise promising shows get shelved after a season or two... the hype is lost to exhaustion.

perhaps financially disadvantageous but i wouldnt agree that it harms the quality of the product itself. i believe a lot people value the social experience of art too much that it affects their opinion of the artwork in and of itself. the value of art isnt tied to group speculation or shared anticipation but to the work as a creation. i dont think that not being able to talk to your friends about how you cant wait for the next episode makes it worse and in fact whenever i consume anything i like being as esoteric as possible so that its entirely my experience, so i actively try to avoid that anyways. at the very least objectively speaking i think theres merit in having your work provided in its entirety. having it all avaiable allows for deeper engagement with the story as a whole rather than breaking it up and potentially diluting its impact

I don't think that's quite an hot topic... I've heard this opinion a bit everywhere, and it's honestly a good opinion, cause then the people that manage the show get to do more and more. Too bad we live in a society where instant gratification is commodified.

Am I the only one that kinda hates how Meat Canyon does his thumbnails for CreepCast or any other video where he talks about topics? I just get weird vibes from them and they make me kinda go away from the video cause I feel a bit of superficiality and whatnot in it. Maybe I'm just a dumbass saying shit like this but honestly I never liked the guy, but his art? Damn cool. Although a bit overrated.

Sautéing them doesn't cost more than five minutes, and helps bring out the dulce part of chile dulce --its name in my region. Still, you're not supposed to put them in everything.

Is bell pepper the same thing as paprika? If so I agree that they should be prepared if you use them in food, but red and yellow raw are so fucking good and sweet, I can eat it like candy!

Depends. Names are all over the place, so it's hard to be sure. Still, I think they're the same thing, yes. In my country they come in green and red, and both of them are always bitter when eaten raw.

This kind of fruit/vegetable, right? They're called paprika here, but if I switch language to english on wiki I get the 'bell pepper' article.

We get them mostly in red, yellow and green here. The red and yellow ones are very sweet and popular on everything from sandwiches to fried or in stews. I like eating them as-is, or cooked together with the dish that uses them. The green ones are stronger and much more bitter.

Damn, I'm making myself hungry now...

I think the McD's apple pie is like the tastiest fast food item ever conceived. I love McD (though it's not the standard in my country, we have way better burger chains than both it and BK) but the apple pie is like the protagonist, and the actual burger is the side order lol

The actual hot take on [especially Japanese] cross-media adaptation is that it doesn't matter if the adaptation changes the original. Many times it is an improvement, while in others it doesn't make things worse.

For an example, I think it was nice adding more characters and cards to Card Captor Sakura in the anime adaption. And there was a major case of "censorship" late in the series,

Universal Century, basically everything he worked on as director between 79 and Turn-A feels like the work of mad man. (Char's Counterattack is good though)
Have you seen Zeta or ZZ? I cannot believe that those are made by the same person as 79; All the non-Tomino directed UC shows are amazing though, when people say the universal century is good you can bet they are talking about Stardust Memory, War in the pocket or 8th MS team

I don't know if it's a hot one but you don't need alcohol drinks nor drinking alchoholic beverages at parties to make them fun. If someone is getting pushy I'll call it a red flag and if someone thinks that a party gets only fun when drinking gets involved they should reconsider their life choice (or the kind of party they're attending).


Next I'll say that not everything in life needs a mature and dark reinterpretation to feel more adult, some series can still be family friendly while having some depth or implied mature themes (while still being watchable by kids). I feel that some people want something to get dark and more serious to not feel ashamed from loving it as adults.
