Metroid Megathread

Oof.

Check out this dialogue. It's Dragon Age: The Veilguard bad.

I'll try the game soon enough today, hopefully it will still be fun to play. I'm not expecting a masterpiece after some critics I've heard and common in so many reviews. But I'm sure I will still enjoy it to some extent.

It's Dragon Age: The Veilguard bad.
While I expected it I think it's not on the same level as "I've accidentally misgendered you so I'm doing pushups" or "Hello, so I'm non binary", it's just that the characters are being overly excited over Samus as if they're self-inserted fans of the franchise. (It's like she's a movie/rockstar lol).

Something I liked about Samus is that despite her unique backstory she's not a chosen one, just a child from a colony that was retrieved by natives and went through hard training.

In a way, if you put it like that, Metroid is basically the tale of a girl from a British settlement that got destroyed by pirates so she was saved by native americans to become part of their tribe as she went through their trials and rituals.

I've heard that some of the Halo 4 people were behind this new game. I got the Halo vibes from that prologue mission.

Anyone else having trouble with the control scheme in Metroid Prime 4? I remapped mine to feel more like the GameCube layout. For instance, putting missiles onto Switch's 'x' button feels so much more natural, mimicking the 'y' button position on a GameCube controller. Suddenly combat became easier!

(And the visor button is now L for me, which works very well!)

I have to say, I was still struggling with whether the 'a' button should be morph-ball or blast. It's in the right position to be morph-ball, but my mind keeps going, "This is the 'a' button!"
For now, it feels okay on 'y.'

This is the one series I find myself revisiting most, hacks/conversions make a 31 year old game still feel fresh

I just want to add one more thing about MP4... (Oh! Metroid Prime 4 shortens to "mp4?" Huh...)
I turned off the human voices, and it's a good change to a problem that many have cited.
At first, I had voices set to 50% volume, which worked very well for the first mission where soldiers are barking or talking to you; and it worked so well, because it gave me the impression that Samus barely cares what people are saying. She listens and then keeps focussed on her own thing.
When the first stranded scientist/marine is introduced in a cutscene, it was good to hear his monologue, introducing the character a bit. But then I decided to turn voice volume down to zero. This had an interesting effect on further cutscenes: they play out like mimes. I mean, you can just see him in his suit making gestures, and Samus occasionally responding with an action of her own. The techno-babble is lost... And I don't have subtitles turned on... But this is totally okay with me.
Just wanted to share that, in case it sparks some thoughts ^_^

I would've said Ripley but this also applies.
I guess if they had included dialogue and other characters in the first game, Samus could've been as talky as Ripley! That would've kickstarted a very different series going forward... Interesting to think about

Metroid Prime 4 Sales Are So Bad In Japan That It's Being Outsold By Welcome Tour

Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, for example, was the 13th best-selling Switch 2 game in Japan this year. Even though Welcome Tour only costs $10, it was slated at launch as being a game that should have been free, and presumably didn't sell that well. Despite that, it has managed to far outsell Prime 4's first few weeks of sales. Kirby Air Riders, the third best-selling Switch 2 game of 2025 in Japan, even though it only had two weeks longer to rack up its end of year total than Prime 4.

R.I.P. Metroid Prime?

Project Base is my new crack. I absolutely adore the whole design and layout of the game. Super Metroid might be my number 1 game of all time. It actually has gotten better with time.

i need samus to peg me
Any luck?

I don't think MP4's going to do so well in the west. It's one of those games that really needed an incredibly positive reception and it didn't get that. I've listened to a few gaming podcasts and they've been so harsh on it. I don't think it's THAT bad. In fact, I don't think it's bad, just disappointing. For example, Jeff Gerstman, a guy who talked about how he liked Dragon Age: The Veilguard on the same podcast, basically called the game crap. Nextlander had similar thoughts.

wasnt veilguard almost universally hated though? i wouldn't take someone who has bad taste like that's opinion seriously tbh
