Metroid Megathread

finished the 11% glitch run - I had to run it at half speed to get the bomb jumps down and I used the ammo underflow to get enough super missiles, so it wasn't entirely on my own
I used the project base version for this one

I really should try Super again but I'm afflicted by the syndrome of "where do I go?" each time I do this game, I've only finished it once back in '17 after doing AM2R.

finally played and 100%ed my first ever metroid game last week, metroid fusion! it was insanely fun, i think shinespark is one of the coolest abilities in any 2d platformer and i really loved the room where you have to zig-zag back and forth with it to get that one power bomb tank. the boss sprites were also really cool looking, i liked neo ridley and nightmare a ton

I had some issues with shinesparks and wall jumping because those are looking tricky without proper tutorials.

i had my roommate to guide me, she grew up with fusion and she did a really good job explaining all the mechanics to me in a way that was understandable

i finished prime 4, its a 6.5/10 that could and should have been an 8/10

ill start with the bad because i like to end on a positive note
-mcu quip guy's "hints" were almost always completely useless
-the sol valley is too big for how little there actually is in it, also why are the green crystals not 1 bug chunk i could just smash all at once?
-why do i when i get a beam upgrade did i have to take it back to mcu quip guy to get it installed instead of just getting like every other upgrade?
- the vi-o-la hoverbike mode is the second most worthless upgrade in the entire series behind only the ship missles in prime 3, i felt like i was on ice the entire time and its only needed for 2 rooms
- the real problem, the momentum of the game completely crashes 3 times, twice because it does a poor job of telegraphing where you need to go next, i ended up just messing around in the sol valley getting crystals until mcu quip guy told me where to go next both times back to an old area that i had completely forgotten hadn't been fully explored, this is the only time mcu quip guy gave helpful hints
-the last time the pacing crashed is after getting the last teleport key, you have to find tokabi in the desert and then he will give you a teleport chip that mcu quip will then make into patches to use on mech parts, but the problem is that the game never tells you this at all and i ended up having to look it up after doing more than half of the end game cleanup and wondering why i couldnt interact with the mech parts, genuinely what were they thinking

the good
- i really liked the designs of samus' new suits
- tokabi was a really cool character and i liked the lore he added to the series, i genuinely hope he comes back in a future game
-the vi-o-la was actually really fun just in of itself, biker grrl sams go brr
-the ice belt area was a great area i loved it the atmosphere and tension buildup that went on throughout it was great, very spooky
-sylux origin story, i personally liked it. not gonna spoil it but how you get it for everyone is you have to get both 100% logbook and item completion on a file and then it will unlock in the gallery after beating the game

Kensuke Tanabe is Retiring. Has said Prime 5 hasnt been confirmed yet

in other Metroid news. Prime 4 ended up being the 7th best selling game in december and the 2nd best selling game on nintendo platforms just behind Pokemon Z-A

When I'm feeling down, I often find myself playing Metroid. It's got a soothing effect in a way because it just feels so familiar and fun - especially Super and Zero Mission. I love this franchise a ton ::peacemario

Zero Mission is my absolute favorite, i love it. ::heart

AM2R too, even though it's a fangame i think more people should experience it because its a fantastic remake. (Samus's movement from Zero Mission is recreated 1:1 in this game, which is a major plus for me)

also a little random fun fact that blew my mind the first time: the lead dev of am2r is from Argentina, my native country :o

I feel like people at Nintendo has watched Star Trek (the Animated Series) because it also features an avian-like alien species (the Skorr):

Maybe not with the same properties as the Chozo but still vaguely lookalike.

Either that or スペースコブラ・Space Adventure Cobra.
The Star Trek, the animated series was quite amazing. If I remember correctly it had many of the original cast reprise their roles.

I remember a duck beak species but which one was avian like a Chozo? I really need to read the manga in its entirety someday.

I like Nintendo's pulp sci-fi settings in Metroid, F-zero and Star Fox. I need to continue Omega 6 the Triangle Stars.

It had some pulp-like episodes but was a solid fourth season overall.

I vaguely recall seeing something like that in Cobra, I can't remember which chapter though. The Animated Series episode "Beyond the Farthest Star" always fascinated me, as I believe the ship originated from somewhere near galactic center and was from an early time relatively close to the big bang. Omega 6 looks cool.

I planned on rewatching the original anime and the more recent continuation.

ST: TAS was interesting as they weren't limited by the props of the time. The animation was kinda stiff but the stories were good. I love how it's from the same studio behind He-Man so some characters are similar. I also find it funny that they recycled that one animation where they start running towards the camera.

Omega 6 looks cool.
I am not a big fan of the rock paper scissors card based battle system because it feels a bit like RNG with only speculative strategy but aside from that it's a good point 'n click like adventure game.

I really miss when sci-fi was "funky".

I need to recover from MP4. I finally fully understand why many people were disappointed by this game. I can only wish the Prime series won't stop there. I'm kinda faithful for the 2D main one. A game taking place between Fusion and Dread explaining the plotholes derivated from the end of Fusion would be cool.

I really want to play MP2 again.

Wish they could do a Remastered of 2 and 3 while fixing their flaws (especially the limited ammo for 2 and the forced motion control for 3). Possibly compatible with the NS1 since the first Prime was on it.

In a better world they would also work on a HD port of Prime Hunters and Samus Returns.

Ok probably a hot take, but i think the motion control in prime 3 (and by extension the new play control versions of prime 1 and 2) is actually great, thats how i played them in the prime trilogy and it felt great, very responsive, the wii is the one console that actually had good motion controls

Maybe it can be good once you get used to it but I always felt like FPS were still the best with a KB+M and thankfully Prime are slower paced games and the lock on makes it easier to take time.

At least letting people choose between Classic, Modern, Motion, Gyro and Mouse controls for all games is still the best idea to give and I hope Prime Remastered will get an update for the NS2 with that scheme added.
