Mega Man Megathread

So that's why it turned out so bad.

Yeah. "Cheap" is probably the best way to describe everything about the X5, except the soundtrack.

Woah, I never thought of X5 as such a disappointment.... Yes X4 was better, but did that automatically make X5 a bad game? Sequels often don't live up to original works (X4 was the first X series game of the then current gen) which is often observed even without budget constraints. That was not the case here, this was not a bad game in any regard - solid gameplay, solid soundtrack, some added features since the previous title but much of the same goodness I liked in X4, multiple armours which were cool (admittedly I hated not being able to use the individual parts / having to collect all 4 parts, but I guess that was a result of there being multiple armours). The game lacked anime sequences, which was a huge letdown to my younger self. But I didn't hate this game at all. The plot was enjoyable enough, the soundtrack was fantastic. I really enjoyed X5, I was and have always been a huge Megaman fan. Played this when it first came out and wasn't disappointed. I find the notion that this game was "so bad"/ cheap a bit ridiculous.

For those of us who played it when the game came out we had no idea what was going on with Capcom and just judged the game on its own merits, and I prefer assessing it in that way. You can always look at what was planned Vs what we got and slate the final product.

Some of my favourite games of all time, such as Soul Reaver PS1, were never completed and ended up missing a significant amount of content compared to what was planned. Does that make it bad / cheap? Nah

Hey, if you wanna like it that's completely fine. I'm just saying there were a lot of us who expected better from the series by then, I wouldn't even put X4 as the better game in terms of story. Personally I thought it was stupid the direction they were taking by then, but I guess I was spoiled by the SNES games in the series by then. 😅

Little bit off topic for the most recent comments, but Mega Man 2 is the best even though Quick man's stage should be erased from the fabric of reality.

there was also a three year gap between x4 and x5. 1997 and 2000 respectively. wikipedia said in its article for x5 that the game was well receive overall, and the only main criticism was some repetitive gameplay, which hurt the flow of the game's story a bit.
i hadn't heard anything about budget cuts, but i would not be surprised in the slightest about that happening. it can happen quite often. dead space is a great example of that, each game got half the budget of the previous one.
another factor could deal with the game being in 2d when the ps1 basically had a standing mandate for everything to be 3d. i heard at one point, x4 was going to be cancelled by sony themselves, regardless if anyone at capcom tried to raise an objection about it. fortunately, it managed to escape that fate.
there's a whole bunch of factors at work behind the scenes.

MM2 sucks and Megaman 4 and 6 are better.

This is usually a bit of out of pocket for me but I was listening to Emphatic (band I like) and YT recced me a lyrics video with a X as a thumbnail because uhhh….?

Many, many such cases.
Anyways…

I guess this is the bi-monthly Megaman reviews update. I’m considering dropping the Yakuza review all together to make room for my writing and drawing schedule so it’s easier to get my priority projects done. I’m in a small writing break currently but Zelda made me wanna get back to writing about megeman because the reviews I can imagine myself writing for Zelda would be extremely similar to megeman cuz they’re attracting me for similar reasons (e.g learning about enemy names like “Like-likes”). It’s getting me quite passionate.

I'm sure that after months of development, your next Mega Man review will be Worth the Wait™.

Last week i finally tried megaman legends 2 .

While the first one was awesome , the second game just doesnt click with me or its not that good overall .

The controls were sort-of an improvement but cumbersome with the lock-on , the limited special weapon magazine system was unnecessary , the story feels bloated with all the extra characters , the dungeons were a bit too Zelda-fied (for my taste) , the sidequests were much more a chore/annoyance and most of them are only Zenny collecting , many enemies have suddenly invicibilty-phases after one or few shots or are almost completly immune to damage with a small window of possible damage input and Megaman as a character becomes somehow dumber than in the first game or even becomes a totally different character overall (maybe because the voice-actor changed and sounded too much like roll ) .

Do i overreact or are there valid points that i made ? I mean its a sequel to a really great megaman-spinoff-series and should be much better than the first one but for me its the opposite somehow .

Okay . I go to the shaming corner while wearing a megaman helmet and blast the Megaman & Bass soundtrack 24/7 .

What Megaman-fan did i become ?
A miserable little pile of E-tanks ?
But enough talk ... its shaming time ... ::dkfacepalm

there were sidequests in the game? i don't remember that at all. i remember the fire dungeon and that giant robot and the stupid train level that i got stuck at. stopped playing after that.
sometimes the quality of a game will drop if the company in question has too many games in development at once. legends 2 was in development at the same time as x5 and probably some other games as well. this also happened with 4 final fantasy games on the psx and 1 on the ps2. ff7, 8, 9, 10, and tactics were all started development at the same time, and the quality varies greatly between the 5 games. and it seems like the ones that come out first have the most problems.

Fun Fact: Zero 2 and X7 came out the exact same day. (October 14, 2003 in the U.S.)

That would explain why the game wasnt so polished in its gameplay .

The boss in the jungle dungeon was already a mess .

Spinning blades on the walls of the dungeon , the tadpoles in the middle of the arena that instantly stunlock you if you touch one of it , the fly-robots that sometimes catches you in the air and the frog-boss with an homing bubble attack that fills up the arena more while his tongue attack is hard to dodge and can only be damaged when his mouth is open .

Yes , the bosses in the first game were mostly push-overs , even with the machine gun buster alone but the controls were much better because the auto-aim was perfect to multi-task movement and attacking while you have enough vision to see whats in the arena .

And the longer i played MML2 the more messier the game becomes .

You're the first person I've ever met who genuinely thinks MML1's controls are not utter garbage.

Well ... i adapted myself to the tank-controls and never had any problem with it .
With Tank-controls overall , i have and had no problems whatsoever .

And how many times i beated the first game , the controls comes to me as second nature and had cool mechanics which opened up manuveurs that i cant do with twin-stick controls . But i can only explain from my subjectivity that the controls in MML1 were actually awesome for me ( still with minor gripes and some rough spots ).

MML1 had not only instant 180° Turns but even instant 90° turns too . The auto-lock-on was more about centering the screen on the enemies manually while you shoot at them and avoid their attacks constantly (yeah its the good ol' reliable circle-straving tactic) .

And MML2 just throws me off with its own controls .

Am i weird ?
Yes .
Will i be friends with MML2 ?
Hard to say but i try .
Are Tank-controls awesome ?
I think so . Because tanks are always awesome !

To each their own, I guess. I think tank controls are indefensible and horrible.

Understandable and i respect that .
I think its easily possible to make great MML games with twin-stick-controls .

Thats why i still waiting for MML3 to come out that capcom owned us .

And i know it wont come ....

Fuck Capcom ...

(Megaman Legends doesn't have tank controls!) but anyway some like it some don't, I can understand why either way.

I really enjoyed circling around enemies adjusting the angle slightly with L/R to avoid trajectory of incoming attacks and then switching direction. Mastering this makes you near invincible, and it's very rewarding to use against tougher bosses. Also the main buster gun upgrades for range affects how large a radius you can maintain while circling and can really change your strategy. You can play it safe at a distance or go for power / speed upgrades and be more aggressive. System worked well and controls served it well enough for me!

Has anyone played the games on the wondersan/color? I tried the first hour on both and they feel pretty rough. Is it worth finishing?
