Mega Man Megathread

At least there's that.

Which Megaman games are still stuck in their original hardware? I mean as mainline games. MM&B is one example.

Also which fan game or even romhack can you recommend me? I have Megamaker, 8-bits Deathmatch and Megaman Again as well as Rockman 7 Famicom.

I've found and installed the Wiiware versions of Megaman 9 and 10 (with the DLC .wad thankfully).

Were those DLCs included by default in the Legacy Collection versions of those games?

I wish Konami made the same efforts to port their Rebirth games to modern hardware the same way MM9 and MM10 are no longer in Wiiware prison.

Same.
They were! but they don't really have any differences otherwise.

actually they might have less content in the sense the original achievements were removed, but... mister perfect? yeah it's for the best.

Stuck Games:
Super Adventure Rockman is both stuck on playstation and untranslated. it's a weird choose your own adventure/lightgun shooter. I believe it's considered canon? the archie comics, manga, and most fan works treat it as such at least.

Megaman and Bass is only on SNES and GBA, but I'd play translated SNES, the GBA screen crunch is abysmal.
It's sequel on the Wonderswan is also not available outside of emulation. (this is also a sequel to Megaman 2 Gameboy?!)

The Megaman Gameboy games are pretty light on story, but they referenced several sometimes (especially in Megaman 10 and fan works). There WAS going to be a GBA collection where they were colorized... but that was canceled. I'd recommend at least playing IV and V for sure. II is the only game in the whole franchise with bad music.

Megaman X has an RPG called Command Mission. I believe it's the only spinoff of X with a major story. It's Canon is... questionable. it's not like it can't happen SOMEWHERE between X and Zero series?

Megaman Network Transmission and Battle Chip Challenge were not released on legacy collection
There are also 2 mobile games that were recently translated. There is also a wonderswan color game specifically based on the exe anime (so not canon). Rockman exe 4.5 was also translated, but doesn't really have a story in it despite it sounding closer to a mainline title than the others.

even if we get a legends collection, it's worth noting we MIGHT not get misadventures of Tron Bonne

Fan suggestion:
Megaman Unlimited is a Fan Game that try's to connect the lore a bit extra, and is also hard as hell while still being extremely in line with Megaman design. good if you think 9 is too easy, hahaha,

Also, I second whomever suggested 8bdm. it's AMAZING. it basically acts as a split timeline that starts after Megaman 6... but it's so fucking good. I can't recommend it enough to anyone willing to hear about it.

ah, I should have noted that Network transmission is set between Battle Network 1 and 2
Battle Chip challenge is set between 3 and 4
the series works with or without them, especially Network transmission, which was made after 3 was already out, but I AM a little sad we didn't get them in any form with legacy collection.

Thanks!

The Gameboy entries are on the NSO but I would've preferred a proper compilation you could buy and own like with the Gameboy Castlevania games.

I was really curious about how they made a classic style game within the Battle Network universe. Shame it's not available.

As for Megaman 9 and 10 I kinda want to headcanon that they're both set between somewhere between MM6 and MM8 to justify the comeback to the 8-bits style.

Poorly!!!

jokes aside I actually have a very big soft spot for the game. I am able to recognize it's flaws, but can't help but love it. it's funny how many megaman games are like... 7-8/10 for hyper specific reasons.

I'd recommend it between BN1 and 2, it's an interesting experience.

Me: So... sleepy... Zzzzzz... *snore*... zzz...

My brain: Volnutt can't teleport like the other Mega Man's, if he could he wouldn't be stuck on the moon.

Me: *wakes up* FUUUUUUUUCCCCKKK that's right, I wonder why he can't teleport...

He's by far the most analog. no fancy transforming limbs, just what can attach in the shop. maybe...
portable teleportation units just are not possible for carbons.

Are the BN games long? I've always been apprehensive about grindy long RPGs... I still wanna do the Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario games someday.

As for MM Battle Networks how long as they usually?

When I see Megaman and X next to each-others I think of Kid Goku and DBZ Goku in a way.

The main story isn't really grindy at all, save 1 or 2 weird gates in a few of the games. Progression isn't really measured by number of battles you complete in the way you would expect either, you don't "level up" or anything like that. sub 10 hours for the main story isn't unreasonable, even on a first playthrough. I once beat one of them in an international flight... literally the whole thing while the plane was in the air. I knew what to do for the most part, but it's not like I am a speedrunner.

(the speedruns are mostly sub 2 or sub 1 hour)

most of them also have postgame content with unique content to them, but it's probably not worth it on a first run.

I'd also warn that 1 is a little rough around the edges simply because the gameplay is so experimental. I can say I've never seen what battle network did replicated till very recently, and even the games coming out now that are inspired by it play very differently. It's a very unique franchise, and I am quite a fan of it... if you couldn't tell, hahaha.

I can best describe it as: deck building chess movement action rpg.

I'm halfway into MM8 and I absolutely adore this game!

I can't believe how hard they've butchered the cutscene with Light's dub lol

Is this me or Duo has a strong Tezuka vibe in his design?

I think it's mostly because of his face.

ah yes, drunk eating while eating a sandwich doctor light. look forward to my favorite part, the one where Megaman screams at the top of his lungs for a full 20 seconds without interruption. gets me every time, I laugh, I cry, I dance and shout. I really feel like I too am in 20 seconds of agonizing pain.

Look forward to more quality dubbing in X4!

Aaand done with Mega Man 8! I really like the game! 7 and 8 are probably my favourites. Maybe except the board sections, especially the first Wily Tower level.

I'm super glad you enjoyed them! It is funny how much of a spike in difficulty both the final boss of 7 and first Wily stage in 8 are. Next is 9, which I'd argue is just hard in general from start to finish. 9 and 10 are meant to have a megaman run first story wise, but 10 is so good I usually wind up playing multiple times.

Ah... but "&Bass" is next... oh boy... let me know how that goes. I would say Bass is much more interesting in general for that one. it's unfortunately a game that isn't too heavy on story compared to 8, 9 or 10, but I find Bass's run more interesting. Also more fun, the levels seem to have him a little more in mind in general.

DAMN
I NEVER THINK ABOUT IT

Playing X4 on sub and dub are two different experiences

One to see the story, the other for the memes.... like Megaman 8

WHAT AM I FIGHTING FOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRR!

Megaman: "sucks that king died"
Roll: "no he didn't?"
King: "Dear Megaman, it's me king, I'm okay, hope we meet again, now goodbye forever."

none of these games are like... Shakespeare or anything, but I never liked this ending XD
