Mega Man Megathread

I don't know what could be called the DNA equivalent of the robots/reploids but Bass is basically a sorta "clone" of Megaman (not in the genetic sense of course).

I also just noticed that his "cheek lines" are slightly reminiscent of Perfect Cell's... Must be a design trend of that epoch.

Oh and I've just finished Megaman 11. Xmas got me busy to finish it before.

How do i get started in the lore? Any game you recommend for a start?

I'm pondering if I want to do the NES hexalogy or starting the Zero series (and the ZX ones).

I mean, just play the Legacy Collections. Start from the first classic Mega Man one (first 6 games) and then alternate with the first Mega Man X Legacy Collection. I would recommend this since you can tell the evolution of the franchise. Then keep at your heart's content.
You'd mostly play these games for the gameplay than the lore anyways. Although it is still cool to talk about it.

Both RPG series, BN and Star Force (the latter takes place 200 years after the former) are a different matter since Battle Network and Star Force are in a different timeline where internet technology took over than robotics.

My first console game was Megaman 3 on GB. After that it was X4, Legends, 8, X5, MM Zero and finally Zero 3 (skipped 2). Years later on emulation/pc I played a whole bunch more: Megaman X , X6 and X8, Megaman 7 and Legends 2. Enjoyed them all despite this jumbled order.
I would say play a bit of the X series before Zero series to get a feel for X and Zero's camaraderie. It will add weight to the plot.
Other than that, just play whatever appeals most!

Whichever you've forgotten the most?...

Enjoyed watching this and reading the comments too.

I wish they could have made more 16-bit classic Mega Man. Although, to be fair, we got blessed with the X trilogy. Instead we got both blessed and cursed with Mega Man & Bass (game is alright and impressive looking, but brutally difficult).

While lore isn't as big of a focus (all the classic games are "Willy strikes again" and all X games are "Somehow, Sigma has returned"), going in order for the X series then starting Zero after half of them, then both ZX is the usual recommendation, the games usually tell a bit of what happened before but knowing that makes everything connect better.

The best point to start is the first X game in my opinion (the PSP remake is also good + the 25 minute anime episode it includes), it tells enough so you can get to the jump n' shoot right away.

So, I got X Dive Offline just because it was at a low fair price on Steam right now and I just don't know what to expect out of it.

I'll just set mods first, even if it seems that nothing goes that far to make it less gacha-esque besides the restored content and less grind.

For 2026 I'll probably do MM 1-6 since they are quite short. I'll also do the PSP remakes of MM1 and MMX.

I really like how MMZ' ost sounds like Sonic Advance. They are good examples of GBA soundtracks.

Ok, i'm once again asking for your opinions here, i finished x4 and x5(the improvement), now i wanna know what's the best way to play x6, now i wanna hear opinions!

Megaman X Legacy Collection 2? Emulation?

I never noticed that. Any tracks in particular that are similar?

I would play vanilla first personally BUT
if you're only ever going to play it once, then play Tweaks hack. Two reasons : 1. It gives upgrades per armour piece rather than needing to find the whole set to benefit, like in x1-x4. 2. It resets rescuable reploids that get infected/eliminated by the virus - which can be very annoying. But that permanent loss element does make for quite the challenge to perfect the stages in one go.
Having said this I've not played the hack myself. I reckon these two changes explain why tweaks ranks higher than the more recent n's edition.
I'll end up playing both at some point.

The Tweaks hack has a patcher program to customize all the aspects of the hack using a simple UI if you wish to mess a bit with it, that way just some aspects of the game can be ironed out at your demand (for example, removing the giant instakill press from a level, reduce the HP of very annoying bosses or simple visual changes to the graphics).

There's just no better way to play it other than this patch, really. The entire game suffers from horrible design in so many things.

There's a new project trying to fully remake the game in a newer engine while reworking the entirety of it (akin to Sonic Project 06) but it will take some time to release.

What's all your plans for Mega Man games in 2026, especially to hype up the arrival of Dual Override? Not planning to get Star Force LC since I still have the BNs to beat, but this year I'm planning over Zero 2 to 4 and BN 3 and 4.

Can we all agree that Mega Man X4 is peak?

Fixed. And: absolutely yes.

I want to finally play and finish MegaMan 10 (with the three characters), as well as actually beating 9 with Blues (cause goddamn is it hard)
Besides that, maybe replay the Zero series, starting from the first one and to finally play the 4th one, and maybe give another chance to the Legends series

Oh, and getting back to finish Battle Network 2, cause I've started that game like 3 times already and always dropped it lmao

Is there a reason why MMX' robot masters are animal themed?

Just in general.

There's something very cathartic about the sound of the health bar filling as the game pauses for a bit

It's similar to the one from the Kirby series (I couldn't find the first game's sadly)

I think the best way to play X6 is the "X6 Tweaks" romhack

It adds a bunch of improvements and QoL stuff. More info here:

Mega Man X6 Tweaks is a good alternative if you really wanna get your fix. However i would recommend you to wait until the full release of a fan remake called Viral Nightmare.

It's not as flashy as MMX8 Demake nor as inventive as Corrupted, but it is a massive improvement over the original.

Happy New year mega fans
