Mega Man Megathread

You probably didn't notice, but there's a dedicated Mega Man thread.
Yeeaah.....

Follow up question: I got the X Legacy Collection 2 on Switch. Is it okay to play there, or does it suffer from lag that makes it genuinely worse?

I remember MegaMan 8, one of my favsssss, running like utter TRASH on the Anniversary Collection.

It's good for what it is. Massive improvement after X6 and X7. I remember liking how they brought back Bass's gameplay through Axl.

I never got to unlock it, but Battle and Chase is in X Collection on PS2. Seems like a neat game, but I kinda wish it had come out on N64 as well. Racing games thrived over there and the N64 needed more MegaMan love :(

Good evening.
My favorite Robot Master is Elecman.
That is all.

(I like how he looks like he could be the protagonist of his own game, and I love how he has that little finger ball thing instead of a cannon, and how he’s got bracers)
HES THE BESTTTTTTT! I'm a Time Man guy myself, but Elec Man is badass. Pretty sure, if he ever got his own game, it would play like PulseMan on Mega Drive (sick game. Check it out it you haven't!)

I haven't played the game myself, but I know that it returns the series to side-scrolling platforming after the disaster that was X7!

X6 left me a bad after taste and never got around to palying further entries in the X series. Maybe I should fix that, thanks for reminding me X8 exists, OP!
You're welcome! Just... probably emulate it? I saw a copy going for $100 yesterday at a local used game store. Probably price gouging, but I'd expect it to be trending at $80 USD or so regardless.

It has come to my attention that I kinda answered my own question just now.

Has my favorite OST of the series
And I also love what they did with VaVa voice
Considering that he already has already revive like 2 times (more in the Japanese version) it feels correct to him having that crazy voice.

X8 was a big course correct after the disaster that X7 was, although some of X's weapons are kind of ridiculous (Shining Ray, looking at you). I also deeply dislike how the armor looks, though the modular chip system is interesting.

The biggest fault, though, is not with the game itself, but the fact Capcom never followed up on it. X8 Demake also deserves a mention, as it does some things better than the original (especially armor functionality), but the lack of Axl and Zero is a strike against.

it's on my to-play list, but i'll be using a cheat code to unlock the navigators for play at the start. i like layer and alia and it would be fun to play as them.

I love it!
Just kidding, I hate it
Every stage just feels like one big gimmick and nothing else. Even X6 and X7 still consistently have different gimmicks plural. Minus Blaze Heatix and Shield Sheldon but anyway. The stages that are especially egregious for this were Inferno (just an auto scroller, boo), Metal Valley (conceptually cool but there is practically nothing in that stage that specifically poses any sort of threat), and Dynasty (just pure ride chaser with clunky controls, no thanks. At least Booster Forest, Central White, and Primrose actually try to be traditional Mega Man X stages you'd see in an older game (especially Central White, big Jet Stingray vibes there), but they fall pretty flat. I don't like a lot of the music in this game either. I'm not opposed to rock at all, in fact I am a metalhead. But where X8 goes wrong is how samey the instruments are, how repetitive a lot of the songs get, and how it really feels like literal background music with how uneventful it sounds most of the time. It's middle of the road for me. So why do I hate this game exactly, you may ask? It feels empty and underwhelming especially given its the last mainline Mega Man X game with no X9 in sight. I'll give it points for it's story though, since the other X games lack in that aspect or make the mistake of treating it like an afterthought (yeah I'm talking to YOU, X4).

X8's demake fixes a lot of the issues I had with the game, minus music.

My music highlights because despite what I've said, there's a few I like:

-Inferno (Descending): Favorite in the whole game, goes on for a decent while and actually sounds fleshed out
-Metal Valley (Overheat): Really cool sounding, it's a shame it's one of the shorter and repetitive ones
-Noah's Park: Really good intro stage music, the main melody and length make it stand out in a sea of the same instruments for the rest of the game. I'd genuinely place it above a lot of other intro stage themes, including X6.
-Lumine Phase 2: Who actually hates the song?
-Vile: Vile NEVER misses with music
-Copy Sigma: It's like X3's Sigma 1st but actually realized and memorable
-Sigma: A damn good remix of the above, fitting for the twist
-Booster Forest (Ride Armor): With how uneventful the normal music was, this was needed
-Dynasty: Futuristic jazz music is the kind of variety I wish this game had more of, catchy too. Best part of the garbage stage it belongs to.
-Primrose: I love my reject X4 stage theme, kinda glad they didn't go with the prototype, this game needed tracks like this
-Central White: Gets stuck in my head and I'd put this pretty high on a maverick stage theme list.
-Boss: Well of course
-Gateway: A very different fortress stage theme for Mega Man X, psychedelic rock that almost reminds me of Pink Floyd, Hello Ocho, and the third stratum theme from Etrian Odyssey V
-Jakob Orbital Elevator: No one can hate Jakob Elevator
-Sigma's Palace: SUDDENLY, Final Fantasy music!
-Vs Maverick: Don't let the name fool you, this is the miniboss theme. It's also a BANGER, and I'm not sure how no one talks about it. Only negative is that the melody is kind of drowned out by the background instruments, especially notable when the guitar comes in.

that's it

but enough of my opinion, if you have the means try it, my opinion is a hot take in the community

Oh, hey. A megaman thread!
Might as well share my expereience with the series.
- Made the mistake of playing all the classic Megaman games for the first time in a row before 11 came out. I burnd out hard on them and never revisited since
- Played X to X5 and stopped at the beggining of X6 because I felt that game was going to be bulshit. Heard enough about X7 to stay away and X8 looks alright but somehow I don't care for playing it right now.
- Zero games were very good. The ending to Zero 4...
- ZX and ZX advent didn't click with me at all. Felt they were too confusing to navigate. Thought the charatcers were cool tho.
- Megaman Legends is my FAVORITE!! Loved exploring the dungeons and getting upgrades to explore more while progressing the story. Legends 2 while looking better and having better controls and also Being impressivily cinematic for a PS1 game, didn't click all that much with me. I don't remember much but it seemed like it went away from the stuff that I liked from 1.
Maaan, kicking the can to the trash and getting money was somehow so much fun!
Legends 3... I have hopes it's gonna happen someday!

I'm gonna try ranking them too. It's been a fair while since I played many of them, so this is going on feeling and memory more than what I'm 100% certain I think. The lower part of Classic is fuzzier than the higher part!

Classic series
  1. MM3
  2. MM7
  3. MM5
  4. MM4
  5. MM2
  6. MM9
  7. MM1
  8. MM6
  9. MM8
  10. MM10
  11. MM11 (Unfair because I haven't finished it, but I wasn't too keen on it when I tried it)
The Classic series biggest sin is simply how the later 8-bit entries blend together simply because they're not as early, so a lot of the better parts gets muddled together with them not being as memorable as earlier titles by virtue of not getting as much attention. 5 is excellent though. 7 was my entry-point for Megaman (aside from playing the first one at my aunt's house when I was 3 years old), so in a way it's like the quintessential "look and style" for me.
------------------
X series
  1. X1
  2. X2
  3. X4
  4. X5
  5. X8
  6. X3
  7. X7
  8. X6
X1 is one of my top 5 games of all time, but the worst part of X is how they're such a roller coaster in difficulty. Some of them are way too easy the entire game through (X5, X8) while some are relentlessly difficult it starts getting unfun (X3, X8 unless you play on Easy). I'd say the best balanced ones are X1, X2 and X4 (particularly the X mode. Zero mode is both harder and easier at the same time in different ways iirc)
------------------
Zero series
  1. Z3
  2. Z2
  3. Z4
  4. Z1
I'm simply too much of a shitter for the general difficulty of these games. I think the story is cool throughout and in some cases more memorable than the gameplay, but I seem to remember having the most fun with 3. Z4 was the only one I beat on my own as a kid, so it's probably the easiest?
When Zero 1 released I thought it was the coolest game ever made, hands down. I wanted to be Diaper Zero, and remember imitating the way he jumped and swung his sword when playing at school. Megaman is like the single series where I think it gets cooler when it's stupid-edgy (even though my favorite setting overall is Classic), which is probably why I like the Protomen albums so much, since I'm usually not into that sort of fan work. The MMZ collection on DS is one of my most precious physical games I own.

The only Battle Network game I've finihsed (and played more than the beginning of) is 2 so I can't rank that series, and I've never played Legends or ZX so I have no clue about them.

I should replay Zero.

I find any attempts to make Mega Man edgy to be utterly hysterical.

Also, MM5 is objectively worthless.

I generally do for most series, but it was cool growing up with it in a way, so that when edgy chuuni stuff came along I was a 7-8 year old who was super impressed with that kind of stuff and ate it all up. It's like the Dragon Ball Z effect in a way. The distinct style of MMZ helps it stand on its own with its atmosphere alot I feel.
Thankfully every series feel self-contained enough to me that none of them really affect any other's atmosphere or whatever.

I might be confusing 5 with 6 then, as I said it gets really fuzzy around the later 8-bit games (9 and 10 included). The only things I remember about any of them is that 5 has that gimmick water stage, and that you lose your entire buster charge if you get hit while charging which frustrated me, but I think 6 fixed that? I might be going on Robot Masters designs mainly lol since it's always what I think of first.

Mixed. On one hand, it's vastly superior to Mega Man X7. On the other hand, so is cow poop.

For the most part, we're back in a 2D platform action game. Then there are the two on-rails 3rd person slower-bike stages (they are NOT speeder-bikes) that are boring as all hell. Axl is still a little puissant zit. Zero is still awesome. X is still a twerp. Beating the game will allow you to play as the navigators instead - Alia, Loli, and Titty-queen (I think those are their names?). Oh, and if you play for story...I hope you love unresolved cliffhangers.

I really recommend the demake in this case: https://sonicfangameshq.com/forums/showcase/mega-man-x8-16-bit.2184/

i was never going to play x8 for the story, same goes for x7 if i ever bother to play it.
just playing for the navi ladies.

I found out something absolutely silly today... turns out ceratanium has existed for 2 years. it's apparently being used in luxury watches right now. I'm sure we will be making scissors with it soon enough.

I may or may not agree with you. I may or may not have based myself on some or more aspects of the classic and battle network versions of this character.

I genuinely think if game X8 was the game that came out as X7 instead of the mess that is X7, the series would still exist. It's a great game with a lot of questionable choices, which is pretty par for the second half of the X games.

I think the standout issue is that the levels in general aren't that good, which is a shame because the few that are good are fun as hell and show what a solid system X8 was built on. the two ride chaser levels in particular are wastes. also, whoever decided you need to revisit the snow ride chaser level to 100% the game without glitches can get a smack on the head.

Is it fun? yes! Is it worth playing? absolutely. is it the best X game? no.
If you get ps2 version, it's absolutely worth abusing the money glitch, as most of the better upgrades need to be found on stage anyway.

The quality of the series games can be summed up as follows (leaving out megaman x command mission as while it is a megaman x game, it's a turn based rpg and not a proper platformer):

Top 3:
X, X4, X8

Good but has problems:
X2, X5

Uh oh, things getting bad up in here:
X3, X6

Burn burn it to the ground!:
X7

So basically yes, x8 is a great game, it has a few issues but nothing that i'd call big enough to drop it a tier.

I finished my Rockman 8 replay, and man, this game is even worse than remember.

Thoughts in no particular order:
1) I really like the Japanese voice acting, especially Bass and Clown Man. The latter genuinely sounds cute and charming, believe it or not.
2) The snowboard sections in Frost Man's level are manageable. Wily Tower 1 can suck my [male reproductive organ], though.
3) Related to the above, there are just way too many autoscrollers. It really feels like the devs were running on fumes, trying to come up with the new level gimmicks.
4) Bass is such a joke, it makes me sad : (
5) I hate Dr. Wily's boss fight. It's one of the few times I cursed having to input down and jump for slide.
6) I tried using Special Weapons as often as possible, but they all were so boring and uninteresting I gave up on that.
7) I like the mid-boss music and Electrical Communication.
8) Aqua Man is officially one of my favorite Robot Master designs. Look at how dapper he is.
9) Duo is a terrible character and I'm glad he disappeared from the games after Mega Man Battle & Chase.
10) I hate the mazes in Astro Man's level.
11) I hate Sword Man's entire level.
I just played Mega Man 8 and beaten it in one sitting, taking only a short break in the middle.

The game is fine. It's not purist classic Mega Man but it works as a platformer game with gorgeous pixel art. During the game I experimented every weapon acquired from bosses and every one of them has been useful in a few occasions. I wonder how many other Mega Man games can say the same.

Beating the normal stages was mostly a relaxing experience, but when I got to the final floor in Wily's tower it really brought under light how much susceptible to stress I was today, due to having to do the boss rush before Wily after every game over. If it weren't for the circumstances it wouldn't have been that bad I guess. It did felt satisfying getting the hang of the bosses patterns.

I did use Rush's healing, and Energy Saver and H.Speed Charge in the final tower stage, otherwise I didn't bother with these things during the playthrough.

The anime cutscenes were nice minus a few poorly acted voices, it gives a glimpse of what a real Mega Man anime would have been like. Though I skipped a lot of it since I focused primarily on beating the game. I did like Mega Man's voice for the most part.

Also I love Bass' transformation design and theme.

I mostly agree with you, though I place X1, X2, X4 and X8 on the same tier.
