The other issue in the "no politics" rule is that some are telling that everything is inherently political, especially art forms (games included depending of the person you ask).
Yeah but people know the difference between discussing a game's political context and making personal attacks or assumptions about others on politics.
A game like Final Fantasy 7 or 10 is inherently political and talking about its themes and how it handles them isn't disparaging anyone. Meanwhile calling someone a capitalist or a communist in some sort of disparaging/confrontational way isn't discussing the themes or context of art, its just otherizing, reducing and attacking people.
Its more of less an extension of "don't be a dick". There is nothing inherently wrong with a gaming forum allowing overt political discussion, but the moment you do that you tend to force your community on the whole to encourage and disrespect certain viewpoints. Inevitably the userbase will decide amongst itself which ideologies are generally agreed upon and which are ok to bully and it creates a sort of hugbox.
Obviously this place wants to be more relaxed and devoid of that kind of tribalism and othering. There are plenty of gaming spaces online if you want to openly talk about stuff like that on either side of the aisle, but you'll quickly notice that most userbase have already picked a side and while you might not get outright banned for disagreeing with people there, you'll certainly be met with hostility for not agreeing with the tribe.
Besides, there are threads talking about extremely political topics like veganism that haven't been locked. Clearly so long as discussion isn't becoming too aggressive/personal the staff are at least begrudgingly ok with discussion. Obviously when you can't give your 100% unfiltered thoughts on that sort of topic the discussion can only go so far, but its a sacrifice I can understand making to keep the forum inclusive and relaxed.
