Hot takes

If a game is only about text with little to no game over/branching paths then I would call it more like an e-book than a video game.
Even i can't defend Kinetic Novels, thankfully they are a minority.

But, my point comes from the fact that to those not in the know, something like Ace Attorney or Utawarerumono is the same as Planetarian (as good as it is, its a glorified ebook), which leads them to disregard the whole genre.

If you took 100.000 people with no experience of playing games and no nostalgia for them to play through all games ever created and rank them based on what they liked the most, and then made a consensus list based on that, no game on that list would be older than 20 years.

Well, they could fulfil the strict definition of a video game (interactive program on a screen) but I think they don't count as "games" if there is no actual rule nor win/lose condition (nor any specific goal).

I'm sorry but while I like the Ace Attorney and Zero Escape series they at least had some gameplay elements (AA has investigation sections and ZE has puzzle rooms).

If a game is only about text with little to no game over/branching paths then I would call it more like an e-book than a video game.

Even Chunsoft's Sound Novels and Point 'n Clicks have some sort of interaction beyond just advancing the text.
Would Bad Ends count as a lose state? In Fate/stay night I like how they use Bad Endings as foreshadowing. There's one that gives you a glimpse of the power of one the antagonists and that comes a while before it becomes relevant again.

I might be missing the context here, but as far as NSO is concerned, I figured the animosity is the value proposition. It's really not terrible, but updates are slow, they can't get a lot of the big games that people want, and the initial state of N64 games was disappointing.
Yeah, the big 5 games should've been included.

Anyway I'm happy that more Rare games got added.

Slow updates are why I don't wanna pay for a full year even if it's less than 2 bucks per months.

TV Tropes separates VN from actual video games.

I'm sorry but even Point 'n clicks and Myst-like games were niche for PC. I do enjoy Broken Sword but that's because they got more than just text.

Good to hear. I was not referring to you as blaming everyone else. I was talking about the self-appointed "moderator" who decided that the best thing to do was blame the victim and egg on the trolls to attack. I'm not about to forget that happened when talking about being driven out of a thread by them. Though I should have made that more clear.
I dunno if you can see this, but I just want to make it clear that I have nothing against you. In the conversations you’re referring to I called out the other users too and not just you (both times before I called you out), not in some vain attempt to backseat moderate, but because I didn’t want the threads to derail because it all just read as fighting as an outside viewer.

If you read this as me singling you out I truly am sorry because it was not my intention, and I didn’t think it looked like it personally. Maybe I shouldn’t have butted in at all, and you’re allowed to be angry at me for it, but there was zero malicious intent behind my posts.

I won’t bring it up anymore for the sake of the health of the thread, but I still felt that I wanted to clarify.

Honestly I can take "something was never good" as a lighthearted form of teasing. @fake-kun could have said instead "uuuh in my humble opinion I don't like Sonic ?". Or also said "I humbly agree (in my opinion)" instead of "BASED AS FUCK". But where is the fun in that?

I understand trying to maintain things formal and discouraging certain habits in order do maintain a productive and healthy discussion. I mean, why having our tastes invalidated just because someone decided to, when instead we could be an nuanced discussion to understand in which aspects our tastes differ, right?

But there's also no point in discussing the taste itself. This is the "Hot takes" thread, if I only want to state what I like or don't like instead of discussing it in depth, shouldn't I be allowed to speak from the heart and be scandalous and funny about it? What's so wrong about cursing, screaming, or saying goofy words such as "BASED" from time to time? Should I come in this forum dressed in a suit then?

I understand this was a misunderstanding on not being on the same page on what kind of social interaction this was, but this went from a hot take to talking about logical fallacies, making arbitrary comparisons to back up a matter of taste, calling others uncivil and trolls and even a warning being issued at the end.

By the way Skyrim was never good.

Bare Knuckles 3 was the best game in the series until Streets of Rage 4 came out.

Streets of Rage 2 is fine but not the GOAT beat'em up like I hear almost everyone say. Most people love it because it looks and sound amazing, gameplay wise it's a good beat em up but has nothing on the best ones.

Thanks for saying Bare Knuckles 3 and not SoR 3.

I'm not expert enough in term of the genre but 2 was a bit sluggish but I expected it from the games of its era.

Oh i remembered another one:

- VNs and Interactive Fiction count as games.
I think it depends on how much effort goes into developing gameplay. Some VNs are either very linear or give little choice in events. That's basically an ebook with illustrations. Others give you branching paths as your gameplay, with multiple endings. That's basically the old Choose Your Own Adventure books that kids used to read. If they can add more to the gameplay, then sure, they are games. But a bare-basic visual novel is just a novel with visuals.

It was VERY sluggish. More than most beat'em ups.
Well that's when you play Axel. Blaze and Skate are fast and Max can blitz his way. However I hate how much recovery frames there are after a single jab. At least it was fixed when they imported the characters in SOR 4.

My issue is more ennemy placement and pacing. It's fine but can get a bit boring because there are many times when I don't think I need any strategy. At least in higher difficulties the game becomes more enjoyable even though the difficulty can get... stupid at time (aka lots of ennemies instead of clever placement and combination of ennemies type).

It's still a pretty damn good beat'em up but after games like Aliens vs Predator, Fight and Rage and Denjin Makai, or the Dungeon and Dragon games, it was quite underwhelming ( I played SOR 2 pretty late).

I guess people hyped the game a bit to much wich lead to my disappointement and me thinking 'that' it ? that's the goat " ?

I actually was more amazed at SOR1. It's inferior to 2, but it's really interesting and fun in a lot of ways, mostly because of how unique it is for a beat em up (those jabs with insane range will never not be fun).

I'll sound old fashioned but for me a game is about gameplay before anything else.

I'm sorry VN devs and fans but they are the worst games by the strict definition of what video games are.

"Choose your Adventure" style games can be good if done correctly with many alternative endings and many game overs but not everyone is Chunsoft or Capcom.

Now if the text adventure requires you to manually type directions or actions or have a nice picture it could be a plus:

Well that's what the definition of game is. In my opinion, for a media to be considered a game, it gotta have some sort of player participation that could alter the result of the play.
Zork can be considered a video game, a VN that doesn't offer choices or player control beyond accessing settings and save file are arguably not. Both can exist separately, and there are obviously overlaps.

my hot gaming take that i have increasingly lost cool for as i have gotten older is that i just do not care about nintendo properties whatsoever. i did not grow up in a country where nintendo had a significant market hold compared to its competitors, so i did not grow up with the fondness for these properties seemingly the rest of the world did. i understand and give respect/venerance etc to the important milestone nintendo releases i.e old mario and zelda etc but holy shit do i not care about any modern nintendo stuff and it is absolutely everywhere in gaming discourse

Final Fantasy 8 is a good game. People were just too lazy to understand the junction system.

Soulslike are bad conceptually as a genre,

throwing a literal mountain of bullshit at the player =/= diffculty

fighting damage sponges with basically a pool noodle is not fun no matter what

Here’s a hot take for you: the Pokemon franchise in its entirety has sucked horribly since it went 3D with X/Y, even without a certain sausage-sucker making music for them. I consider B2/W2 the informal finale of the series. Even the spinoffs aren’t good, anymore, and every new monster design in the past decade has been atrocious. Outside of fanaticism, I have no idea why people still buy these games.
the prompt said hot takes, not factually correct statements

I'd argue that the Junction System should've been more properly explained.

And mine is that the Sphere Grid from X was good on paper but tedious in execution (especially in the Standard one where you're forced down a path instead of allowing more freedom).

I wish there was a standard level up system but then the Grid would be for skill and magic instead of having to apply a sphere just to get +200 HP or +2 Attack.

Even better if skill trees were allowing you to change them (for a price) instead of knowing your current character is forever messed because you put the wrong skill.

Sausage Sucker? I hope it's not what I think you're saying.

Soulslike/SoulBorne are Action-RPG, why do they have a specific name for that? We stopped saying Doomlike/Quakelike and GTA-like nowadays.

Anyway I do agree that most of them suffer from the "doge/pary and counter-attack, rinse and repeat" game design whereas ARPG like the older Ys (before Seven) had an emphasis on positioning and learning patterns.

I would've liked Dark Souls and other games better if they were more dynamic.

And yes, I absolutely despise when a genuine game design issue is counter-argued with a "git gud" or "skill issue" because they lack any actual argument.

Yooo, my fellow 'don't care about Ninty IP' brethren!

Despite growing up with Playstation and Nintendo, I'm strangely leaning more toward Sega properties, Sakura Wars, Shinobi, and Crazy Taxi was my jam. I'm one of those guys who were not hyped seeing Mario Kart on Switch 2 Trailer, dude gimme something else, you can't convince me with Mario, show me the third parties then ima reconsider.

While I'm sad that my favourite Nintendo IP's are barely used (especially F-zero) I am still happy to see Metroid returning in several forms in the current gen.

But I'm not the kind to say "I'm too old for these kiddy games" because while they're family-friendly most of the time they're not made only for kids. Sadly this discourse around the PS1-PS2 era led to have Rareware releasing edgier games (especially Conker) or having US Nintendo ad becoming gross which I despise (it's one of the few things from the 90's I don't miss).

I'd still argue that Zelda is one of the most important franchises that redefined how games were made (especially Ocarina of Time) even without being a fan of it.

And yes, I'm more fan of Sega's IP (well, especially pre-end of Dreamcast ones).

Mario Kart is fine, I love the 64 episode but I prefer F-zero the most.

I played FF VIII all Of My Childhood, and teenager days, but The junction system is a broken Mess, You can break The game really easy, making The difficulty non existant, or really hard if You don't pay attention to the boring tutorials, the characters are really bland or plain, except Squall or Laguna. But The OST is really good though.
