I think it depends on how much effort goes into developing gameplay. Some VNs are either very linear or give little choice in events. That's basically an ebook with illustrations. Others give you branching paths as your gameplay, with multiple endings. That's basically the old Choose Your Own Adventure books that kids used to read. If they can add more to the gameplay, then sure, they are games. But a bare-basic visual novel is just a novel with visuals.

I'll sound old fashioned but for me a game is about gameplay before anything else.

I'm sorry VN devs and fans but they are the worst games by the strict definition of what video games are.


"Choose your Adventure" style games can be good if done correctly with many alternative endings and many game overs but not everyone is Chunsoft or Capcom.

Well that's what the definition of game is. In my opinion, for a media to be considered a game, it gotta have some sort of player participation that could alter the result of the play.
Zork can be considered a video game, a VN that doesn't offer choices or player control beyond accessing settings and save file are arguably not. Both can exist separately, and there are obviously overlaps.

I have few "hot takes" regarding NSFW content and its normalisation among the youth but I think it might stir up a heated discussion unless you guys want to hear them (8 people say yes then I will do) I'm going to keep them to myself.

Normal people wouldn't let young ones getting easy access but in the same time having to put your ID or credit card on sites to tell you're over 18 is weirdly a red flag to me.

Parents are supposed to check what they're doing on the net to begin with (but sadly the generation that let theirs on the iPad without checking should get some discipline).

The porn industry is evil and should be destroyed, but consuming non-industrial pornography in moderation and in an ethically conscious way is a way for people to explore their sexuality in a safe environment.

It’s generally less black-and-white than you say, though there are definitely problems, but the claims about how supposedly unhealthy it is to consume are generally overblown because it’s extremely dependent on the person consuming it.

The problem with pornography is that it became easily accesible. Gone are the days of waiting till midnight to see some action on TV, and even then, some tame stuff compared to the things that are made today.

I'd say that banning pornography solves nothing because trying to kill it will make it stronger, i think that it would be smarter to restrict what is shown (somehow), dial it back you know. The widespread appearance of porn in the net can be blamed on tumblr banning NSFW content on their website. They opened the floodgates and all those people, creators and consumers alike, started popping up everywhere. Reddit is banning NSFW subreddits, or so i've heard, so maybe we will see a second flood of porn.

I don't think porn is inherently bad per se, as Tonberry said, it can be a safe way of exploring sexuality but everything depends on the content itself. I also think it leads to the cosification of girls and boys alike, it dehumanizes the people on camera. Onlyfans should get nuked.

the normalization thing has been happening since magazines and video tapes existed. it's easier to share stuff like that today because of nearly every phone being a small computer.
a lot of research that i've done over the years has yielded some interesting results. it probably wouldn't be a good idea to go on about them here, it might break the rules; but to be brief with it. a lot of guys resort to hentai and the like after failing miserably trying to do what everyone in society tells them to do to get a woman interested in them. failure after failure and unnecessarily harsh rejections will discourage someone from doing something. a lot of guys don't hold doors open for women under 50 because they bitch at them. ultimately, they come to the conclusion that its better to avoid women and just stay by themselves and use spicy content to take care of their needs.
i feel a bit personally attack by the "burn in hell" part. quite a bit of my art in my gallery on deviantart gets hit by a content filter of some sort, but when i look and see what gets it, it seems almost random. so, i don't know what that really says about me or the site.
the women aren't guilt free either. a lot of them don't mind doing that stuff since it gets them attention and that seems to be more important than nearly anything besides money. the points that you mentioned are still valid, but nowadays, moral standards don't matter much to the young ones. they only end up caring when it is fully impossible to undo the damage, which is usually around 40-50; and at that point, its too late.
a lot of this can be corrected quite easily by bring back moral standards for both sides, and shaming people for openly parading this stuff like its normal and healthy. you can't get rid of porn, it's natural to want to look at that stuff, but the best approach would probably to handle the subject neutrally. making something mystical, forbidden or taboo is just making something more intriguing and alluring to a person; which just makes them want it more, even if they don't like it or want it. make it boring, and they will probably lose interest.

Here’s a hot take for you: the Pokemon franchise in its entirety has sucked horribly since it went 3D with X/Y, even without a certain sausage-sucker making music for them. I consider B2/W2 the informal finale of the series. Even the spinoffs aren’t good, anymore, and every new monster design in the past decade has been atrocious. Outside of fanaticism, I have no idea why people still buy these games.

Saturday Night Wrist is Deftone's best work. While I love Adrenaline, Fur and White Pony the direction they went in for this record - even if unintentional - felt so inspired. Chino's personal woes led to some of his most melancholic and defeated lyrics yet which when coupled with the bands more varied soundscape leads to an album that really feels like a grand goodbye (and it almost was due to band infighting at the time). Switching from turntables to piano/synths was brilliant for the mood on many songs like Xerces and Reviere.

Its chaotic, its experimental and its super eclectic. It is the sound of the band giving up and while the story behind its creation is heartbreaking it resulted in one helluva record.

Cherry Waves remains the best Chino vocal performance and my favorite Deftones song full stop.

My personal take as a self-proclaimed porno connoisseur, NSFW normalization happen because lack of education and supervision, sexuality is part of human nature, and as someone used to say, we can't always fight nature, we can't fight change, we can't fight gravity, we can't fight nothing.

Wait don't jump into an open water yet, lemme finish.

I believe that is the main purpose of sex-ed, kids WILL learn about these eventually, and so it is adults' duty to make sure to steer the young ones to learn about sexuality in a healthy manner. How it became normalized in younger generations now is a sign that we as society fails to introduce this particular aspect of human nature properly, thus they learn and/or gained information from another source that's not always credible or safe. Also due to it's sensitive nature, it is indeed hard to talk about this kind of topic openly in public without anyone around giving you a side eye.
Now I'm not saying we should start acting like a creep openly, every kind of topic, not just NSFW stuff, has it's time and place to discuss.

Pron has always existed in the internet since it's inception, we can't control them, but we can control ourselves and we can control the way we react to it, instead of hiding this kind of thing to the young generations, we should teach them how to approach such sensitive topic healthily.

I'd argue that the Junction System should've been more properly explained.


And mine is that the Sphere Grid from X was good on paper but tedious in execution (especially in the Standard one where you're forced down a path instead of allowing more freedom).

I wish there was a standard level up system but then the Grid would be for skill and magic instead of having to apply a sphere just to get +200 HP or +2 Attack.

Even better if skill trees were allowing you to change them (for a price) instead of knowing your current character is forever messed because you put the wrong skill.

Soulslike/SoulBorne are Action-RPG, why do they have a specific name for that? We stopped saying Doomlike/Quakelike and GTA-like nowadays.

Anyway I do agree that most of them suffer from the "doge/pary and counter-attack, rinse and repeat" game design whereas ARPG like the older Ys (before Seven) had an emphasis on positioning and learning patterns.

I would've liked Dark Souls and other games better if they were more dynamic.

And yes, I absolutely despise when a genuine game design issue is counter-argued with a "git gud" or "skill issue" because they lack any actual argument.

Can't exactly point finger here, they all need to exist.
The guardians to make sure their kids don't have easy access to saucy stuff, the artist to at least try to prevent minors to access their saucy stuff, AND the kids themselves to develop self-awareness and maturity to handle such thing responsibly, trouble comes when one of these doesn't work.

Thus my earlier argument about sex-ed, rather than keeping kids off NSFW subject entirely, we should educate them instead, let 'em approach it in a controlled environment so if bad things do happen, both the guardians or the artist have the capability to minimize the damage.
