Has anyone said anything about the Nintendo Switch yet? That it sucks and is overpriced?
Now that we're at the end of the console's life, I can pretty definitively say that I didn't really like it. Apart from Breath of the Wild, which was my personal game of the generation (and what I'd call the "best" game of the 2010s), I can't really recall a single original title on the platform that I actually liked. Not counting retro games, I only ever owned BOTW (which isn't an exclusive), Odyssey, and Octopath Traveler, and I thought the latter two were pretty goshdarned terrible.
I didn't like the hardware at all, either – the joy-cons really had no advantages over a regular controller, sliding them in and out was kind of a pain, the screen scratched on me pretty darn easily, and using the entire handheld unit often felt clumsy and awkward. (The Wii U's big, chunky handheld controller didn't have this problem!) I only ever played on a base model, but it just didn't feel that good to play. AND THAT'S NOT EVEN GETTING INTO THE DRIFT
It was an OK console, I guess. I had way more fun with the Wii U, and several trillion billion gazillion times more fun with the 3DS. Given the choice today, I'd go with a Steam Deck (or, honestly, a New 3DS XL or an OLED Vita) no questions asked.
I think... I
think... the Switch 2 is going to go better. Obviously it's far too early to tell at this point, and I'm 100% not buying one within a full year of launch, but I do think that they've made some improvements to the hardware – the new joy-con "snap" system looks a lot better, and I'm glad there's a bigger screen. (Let's hope it's OLED!) We'll see about all the mouse bullshit, and the new control stick features. The lack of a proper D-pad is sad, but humanity seemed to forget how to make them in the late 2000s, so I guess I can't really blame Nintendo for that. I just kind of miss regular handheld gaming.
