games that every one hate's but you don't hate.

It's amazing! If you can, I strongly recommend playing the DS-only sequel, Happy Richie Oosouji, which has a great fan-translation. I think it's the best in the series.

I agree about Dragon Quarter, it's nice to see it's more appreciated than expected. I slowly restarted a playtrough and it's as brutal as I remember but strangely it didn't felt as unnerving, maybe because I finished it so much time back in the day and I remember how to solve some critical parts.
I've said this before and i'll say it again, dragon quarter is a good game, but not as a breath of fire game, i think the reason it's so disliked is because capcom decided to make it breath of fire 5, if they had made it it's own series or a gaiden game, it would have likely been more well regarded, but capcom decided to call it breath of fire 5 and when the game got so much blowback, capcom in their infinite lack of self awareness, took this as people hating the franchise now and ended the series, which only hurt dragon quarter in the eyes of breath of fire fans even more.

I think Xenosaga II is a dope game regardless of the development hell and tiring combat. People also diss Shinji Hosoe's portion of the soundtrack but I think it's refreshing and awesome. The game no doubt has flaws but it's still ambitious, weird, neurotic sci fi that one doesn't get often enough in that scene.

I'm looking forward to revisiting Dragon Quarter. I rented it when I was a dumb kid and didn't get it and had no patience lol. I'm playing the PS1 BoFs now and finally beating those first!

I personally prefer xenosaga ep II to ep I, though both are inferior to III, 2's biggest problem is a lack of a shop or trade system of any real regard, II feels rushed, even though imo it does far more with the story than 1 did.

Yeah there were no doubt frustrating things about it, but I think it was, in the grand scheme of RPGs in the ps1/ps2 era, on the higher end of the tier list. I'm basically at the very end of Xenosaga III at this very moment and I'm just blown away. It's a true gem. It's an absolute must play but it sucks that you can't just recommend it without the caveat of the first two classic but flawed titles being basically mandatory for any narrative payoff lol.

I love this game and I still play it from time to time and I don't care it's a mess I'm here to be edgy for no reason and this game satisfies my deep dark fantasies

1737360772591.png

this game is a broken mess and nothing works properly half of a time but if you learn to work over the random bs it will become on of the greatest action games ever, the ideas, and mechanics are amazing but the game is unfinished and unpolished with some questionable designs but I enjoy it

this game was a good game and DMC fandom were just a bunch of cry babies, yes the story is bad but you can't look me dead in the eyes and say DMC stories were master pieces, the gameplay is freaking awesome even in the original version, for the first time platforming wasn't garbage, I love every devil arm in this game, sound track was amazing and dynamic, and it has the best level design in the whole series
it's the 3rd best game in the series right after DMC3 and DMC5 in my opinion
people judged it way too harsh and way too fast

1737362066693.png

never understood the hate for the Z4 to be honest, yes it's not as good as the Z2 and Z# but it's still competent and enjoyable

1737362327932.png

people keep saying double agent was a bad game but the last gen version of the game was cool, at least it was an actual splinter cell game unlike what ever the next gen version was

1737362874385.png

it was fine for what it was, it gets boring but it's not absolute trash as people made it out to be and the idea of being able to beat bosses in any order was fun

D.M.C. was so hated because capcom decided to reboot a game that didn't need a reboot, capcom has a bad habit of doing this, i've said in this very thread that this is what killed breath of fire since they did the same thing with dragon quarter, while it has worked occasionally (megaman X/zero, Street Fighter 2) they've done it to more series that didn't need it or could have been a new series (D.M.C., Final Fight, Breath of Fire, like 10 resident evil games) and in a few cases destroyed franchises that way, D.M.C. should have been it's own game with it's own setting inspired by devil may cry and it would have gotten far less hate because your right it's not a bad game, as long as the asthetic doesn't put you off.

a lot of people absolutely hate cave story 3d, and i seriously don't get it. sure, it doesn't look perfect, but i think they did a pretty good job interpreting the original locations as 2.5d environments, and it gives a lot of extra context as to what those locations are actually supposed to be, and the redrawn face sprites actually look really good, at least to me. plus, i really like the extra areas they added, its always cool to see new areas in a game you've replayed to death. at the very least its inoffensive, but whenever i bring it up people act like wild dogs...

Preach, it's a bit stiff but I had a lot of fun with it. I heard it goes really well with a mouse/keyboard combo.

Asterix and the Great Rescue on Megadrive has a bad reputation, especially in PAL region given that the time limit in levels is way too strict here, but I still like it a lot, it's fun when you get into it, levels are like puzzles where you have to take the least damage possible while going fast.

Even the janky hitboxes and general unfairness do not make me dislike it.
The Master System version is quite different, more fair and it could be called better but I just find it boring.

Less retro : I do like Left Alive.
Left-Alive-Character-Designs-Yoji-Shinkawa-3611825562.jpg

It's a bad game. The only way I managed to do stealth is "try to run faster that bullets" as, somehow, running behind guards seemed to yield better results than trying to avoid detection. I played on a computer barely above minimal specs on PC, Wanzer fights look like Powerpoint presentations. Combat situations tend to get disastrous, especially if you're forced to melee, which is completely janky.
I don't get why I like it and how I finished it. But I do and I did.

There are very very few games as hated as the original Batman Arkham origins on the PS3.
I genuinely enjoyed it substantially more than city, and was shocked at the level of criticism it got online for seemingly no reason.

Zero 4 was hated? that's news to me. It's the only one besides Zero 1 that doesn't have a stupid system getting in the way of the player actually playing the game.

Recently, Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The combat is solid, best among the series. The most problematic scene that everyone pointed out only happen 3 times, isn't tied to main story, and hey, optional. The "diversity" is quite forced, but it's something I can look over because of it's good gameplay. All sidequest involves either your party member or the faction they are in. No more random "Please collect 20 pristine bear's ass for me".

Character build is pretty significant. No more "here's a weapon with 1% damage boost that you are looking for", no. Elemental boost is at least 10%, but most boost is at 15% and 20%. You can focus on one type of damage, one type of weapon, one type of action (be it light attack, heavy attack, ranged attack, or skill), make yourself have unlimited power in cost of HP, etc. Character build is very satisfactory.

Your character can be pretty/handsome if you are adept at creation mode too.

You can play RPS with a skeleton.

The humor is too clean, but sometimes it's a hit.

The romance is good. I've only played 3 times, but so far, all of them are endearing and take a look of your partner's vulnerability and fear. Emmrich especially, I think has an alternate dialogue, depending on your ultimate choice on his personal quest.

And of course, at times, it can be quite epic

It's not retro I suppose but it was designed with mostly retro sensibilities in mind. I think a a good chunk of people disliked it and came away unsatisfied, but I adored and loved Yooka Laylee.

I didn't know it was hated either.I played the first three games and not Zero 4. I liked the ending to Zero 3 so much that I just never bothered to play Zero 4. For me Zero 4 just felt off to the side compared to the first 3. For some reason I've played the ZX series and still have not gotten around to playing Zero 4. Idk, If Zero 4 is decent maybe I'll play it sometime

arkham origins was amazing, it's my most played batman game right after arkham asylum, in my opinion arkham origins story is the most fun in the whole series, I love it, it deserve all the attention that was given to batman arkham tank...wait wait wait I mean batman arkham knight is an original character we swear

Devil May Cry 2 and Metroid Other M. Say what you want, but despite everything, Metroid Other M tried to detach itself from the usual Metroid like atmosphere and game to create something new. It's a bold approach, although it ended quite harshly... especially with ADAM NOT LETTING YOU DO SHIT. But the gameplay is very nice, and the suit design? Hell, it was so popular that Nintendo used it as the model for the super smash bros games. Not a fan of it, but I do appreciate it.

And lastly, DMC 2 tried to be more atmospheric, which worked pretty well, and tried to give more edge to Dante, although it wasn't needed tbh.

Agreed. Without Metroid - Other M, there is no Samus Returns, and then, Metroid Dread (in part).

Still one of my favorite RPGs of all time, I personally thought that Episode 2 was the weakest but mainly because of the combat system, they changed it to something too fiddly and "complicated", which they then ditched again for Episode 3.

I am surprised to here anyone liked this game never mind complete it 3 times. You must really have different tastes to most. I thought the series peaked on the first game and since then only got worse with each entry in pretty much every way...
I agree, each installation, story wise, cannot beat 1.

But 4 (Veilguard) wins in gameplay. I love the tactical combat of 1 (on combat, mostly play on top-down view like RTS), but character building in 4 trumps 1, especially since 4 is easier to get into, but still have a good skill ceiling (like aiming weakpoints with ranged attack) if you want to push for DPS. You think about how equipments (and party members!) boosts your favorite method of attack in 4, while in 1 you just aim for stuff that gives most stat.

Example: How do you play Mage 1 in DA1? Can you be shapeshifter and do well in combat? No right? You go for Arcane Warrior and equip weapons that was probably intended for poor Zevran, but screw him, you know your party's gonna be Alistair, Wynne, and our loyal mabari Barkspawn (When enemy is a mage, Overwhelm, bye Emissary!).

In 4, a mage can focus on their attack type (Light, Heavy, Ranged), and/or element. Let's say you're interested in Necromancy (it's sucks in term of imagination, no corpse raising), you can equip all parts that boosts Necromancy from 10 to 20% for starters.
  • Necromancy tree by design, focuses on Ranged attack, so ideally you focus on weapons that has Ranged boost, but if you don't want to be locked on a single attack, pick one that also boosts Necromancy.
  • There are enemies that resists Necromancy, like Darkspawns. One of your team member can force a Necromancy magic weakness, pick him.
  • The other member has additional Necromancy boost. also pick him.
  • Your mana too low? Get a weapon that converts HP to mana, cast from your hitpoints, UNLIMITED POWER (use the Necromancy drain spell when things get rough, tho)
  • The same can be said about, say Ice (focuses on Rod Heavy Attack), albeit Ice is a bit more complex by converting your party member attack to ice. Ice is awesome to be able to freeze almost all enemies for free damage, plus the Rod Heavy attack is a breath-shaped icy death that you can spam without worrying for mana.
I do have a weird taste, but I know I have high tolerance for bad-reputation games as long as they have a fun and flexible gameplay.

It's true though that hardly anybody mentions anything about that in Veilguard. For those heavy narrative RPG open world games the story and world can overshadow everything else.
If you ever want to give Veilguard a try, go for Elf-GreyWarden for the most extra dialogue involving the main story, and make the inquisitor a lover to Solas (must be female elf too). All the backstories in there are just a mentioned passing, but only Grey Warden makes you actually look competent. Elf because it's huge on elven lore, and a few extra dialogue. Your class is free, but Mage have a few minor dialogue choices not present in others (these minor dialogues will be spoken by your other mage if you aren't one).

Sometimes as well "bad games" can be fun even more so if you are really into a franchise. I watched a full playthrough of LOTR Gollum because I just found it so funny to see the bad writing lol
OMG, I played LOTR Gollum, brrrr. That game's promotional material somehow looks much better than the actual game. After so much delays all we get is a less interesting work simulator like Shen Mue.

I feel the same way with Final Fantasy 12 because even though the story wasn't the best I got hooked on the gameplay and didn't care about the rest
I've been meaning to play FFXII The Zodiac Age. It has been sitting long in my library, looking sad. I've seen my sibling play and I like the gambit system because it reminds me of Dragon Age 1.

I can't stomach Veilguard, the writing and vibe of the Dragon Age games since Inquisition is unbearable for me. Even in Origins I didn't think the writing was great but it was decent enough. Veilguard took it from dark fantasy setting to this weird leftist political fantasy land and it doesn't appeal to me.
I don't like using the term leftist/rightist, since it's too widely used that it's demoted to a blanket term and lost it's particular meaning. I don't like the forced diversity, but as a game, it works.

BTW, Veilguard has working main villains. basic, but they get the job done. Inquisition's main villain cannot even beat you in debate contest. here's his great quote:

For me, DAO was the end of BioWare. I don't think they made anything good after then.
I still like Dragon Age: Exodus of Sarcastic Hawke ::lol

...which ironically I never used in DAO
Dude, you can make your mabari a walking death with a proper setting.

I spent so many nights up till like 5AM
TBH I'll cheat instead of grinding this long. I can only play on weekends back then, time is precious.
