This a dangerous conversation for Final Fantasy fans, lol. I'd throw some fuel into the fire and say Final Fantasy 6/3 US is the best. I do think FFIV is second best, as it is the first game I really loved in the series.
check out this video; it's the fanbase in a nutshell:

midgar is probably the best part of 7. i don't remember much of the game after that, and that is the part that squaresoft would have been able to put the most effort in during development.
I really liked 7 and its writing but now that I think about it, Midgar is the part of the game that I can envision most solidly in my head lol. Guess that happens when you move around a lot... Relatedly I just got Rebirth, hoping I enjoy it : P

I was just coming on to say the exact same thing, the move to action rpg has really depressed me lol
Agreed.... Been hard for me to get into XVI because of that and other things. Also read back a bit of pg.5 and totally agree with the XVI/Yoshi-P convo bahaha. I did like Strangers, though it feels distinctly different from XVI's battles.

VI is my favourite! I'd personally say IX is the best myself

Anyway hi all, nice to meet you! ^^ Anyone interested in telling about their favourite characters?

My favorite ff characters are Rydia, Lulu, Paine, Beatrix, Fairs, Quistis and Fran.

If FF VII was entirely set in Midgar I wouldn't have been upset at all.

Fav characters: Kain, Cecil, Rydia, Rosa, Faris, Terra, Locke, Shadow, Sabin, Celes, Cloud (OG version), Squall, Quistis, Vivi, Steiner, Auron, Baltier, Basch.

Awesome : D I also have a long list but my top favs are Sabin, Faris, Freya, Auron & Minwu

Quistis and Rydia are also great, Quistis is a sweetheart haha

Currently trying to finally finish Type 0 HD. Been slack. Need to finish Sleeping dog first, though.

Tetra Master is the greatest mini-game of all time and it should've gotten it's own console release.

If they remake FF9 they should also simultaneously release Tetra Master as a spinoff title if you just want to play that.

No way Tetra Master is better than Triple Triad. Triple Triad set the standard for card games in Final Fantasy.

Edit: Didn't mean to make anyone sad, lmao. But Triple Triad is the best!

Triple Triad set the standard but Tetra Master perfected it, I don't make the rules.

Fair. The rules are the rules. However, I do like how they integrated Triple Triad into the whole game. Reminds me of gwent in Witcher 3. In Final Fantasy IX, Tetra Master felt like an afterthought.

Really? You can't get though the tournament on disc 3 unless you've invest at least a bit of time playing it.

Trust me, my aunt speaks from experience. That tournament blindsided and stonewalled her since she never really played Tetra Master during her playthrough. She couldn't even finish the game because her cards weren't good enough to win the tournament and thus she couldn't progress since you NEED to win the tournament to advance the story.

At the same time, you don't get the same rewards from playing Tetra Master you'd get from Triple Triad. Basically you need to beat that one tournament and there's no point in playing Tetra anymore.

The tournament is nice though, they should've had something similar in FF8.

I think that would CLASH quite a lot with the major themes of the game???
One of the major theme of the game is ecology, if you stopped every Mako reactors that would've solved one.

It was mostly
after the assassination of the president that the antagonist shifted from Shinra to Sephiroth (especially with the Nibelheim flashback).

I feel that Square felt that no world map would make the game too linear (ironically FFX did that yet was liked) or not "RPG enough".

I really like Tetra Master too, always surprised at how many people dislike it. Triple Triad is alright but I like the rules in TM more : P

They did try that, but didn't succeed at "stopping" most of the Mako reactors in Midgar and it caused more destruction/death than it was worth (even if Barret begged to differ),

I would also argue that Shinra remains the main antagonist throughout the overall story being the driving force of economic oppression in all parts of the world. They were also responsible for Sephiroth's birth, war hero backstory, etc. who certainly is the main antagonist of Cloud's story haha

I'd like Tetra Master more if it felt intuitive. Having every number on a card denote a range of values rather than a strict value makes the game feel awkward and random, especially when trying to learn it. The fact there are layers of invisible lottery to every play spoils the entire system even if once you look up how it actually works and understand it you can become a slightly more consistent player. Triple Triad isn't exactly the highest skill ceiling game of all time, but it is at least consistent and you can hypothetically beat certain NPCs with budget options through clever exploitations of opponent deck weaknesses and AI oddities. With Tetra Master you can do everything right with a beefy deck and still use because layer 2 of the 3 layer dice roll just didn't roll your way and you have no idea that the dice rolls are even occurring until you look it up out of confusion.

Like @Strategist also mentioned later on, Triple Triad just has way more presence in the world and is actually useful mechanically which makes it feel far more substantial.

I don't hate Tetra Master but I do wish it was tightened up because a lot of what they tried with it is a wonderful expansion of Triad. I played a little bit of the PlayOnline version back in the day but can't really recall if it changed anything. Someday I'll track down that limited physical version of the game they released in Europe...

Not sure if any of you hace seen it, but people finally found a way to beat the original Final Fantasy 7 the game with Aerith! It involves the use of a ton of glitches to warp around the timeline and trick the game into doing all sort of things, but it is amazing that almost 30 years later one of the most infamous gaming myths has finally come true, even if through unofficial means.

Feels like such a landmark moment, the fact that it works on every version of FF7 from OG Japan, NA PS1, PC and even the PS4 remaster is absurd to me!

Still has me giddy when I think about it and I certainly intend to make my own save file that uses this glitch on my PS1 copy soon!

I've been beating the original FF7 with Aerith since Epsxe and ArtMoney was a thing (about ~20 years ago). So I wasn't sure on how this is a landmark moment. Thankfully the first minute of the vid explains that this is without Gameshark.
