Fighting Game Central

I forgot to say that I've bought Ultra Street Fighter IV because it was in sales.
Long story shorts I remember playing SFII a ton on a SNES emulator and while I've heard about the Alpha series and Third Strike I've never really followed the franchise up until I heard about Super Street Fighter IV and I ended up buying the 3D Edition for the 3DS because I really wanted to try it out.

I'm impressed how decent of a port that was despite being made for the Xbox 360 and PS3. Of course the game is less pretty and the backgrounds aren't animated but whatever, the foreground is what's the most important about a FTG (I'd even say that 3D backgrounds like in MvC2 and CvS2 are distracting imo).

It's funny how I've only recently got to play the Alpha series 5-6 years ago with the Collection and I didn't know that SFIII was also in 2D (I knew EX on the PSX was in 3D at least).

Honestly I'm not a big fan of the Street Fighter franchise and sadly as much as Alpha and III tried to have a more interesting story (like Ryu overcoming the Satsui no Hado) it's clear that Capcom reverted back to a simpler storyline in IV and I don't know what V and VI are even about.

I'm not asking for a deep and complex story but something more than just "big evil organisation does a tournament" kind of plot.

Aside from the added characters what's the big difference between Super SF IV and Ultra SF IV?

The hardcore FGC really needs to sit there, collective assess down and just shut up. Thank you Max for actually having a reasonable talk, and calling out the bullshit.

Inspired by Viviana Santo's post I decided to share an updated realistic ordered most-played fighting game topster. I omitted nostalgic favorites such as Virtua Fighter (Megamix), Fighting Vipers, Soul, Bloody Roar/Beastorizer, Power Stone, since honestly I don't replay them as often despite my affection to them. Other notable omissions are The King of Fighters '94, Street Fighter (1987), Fatal Fury (1991) which I dislike playing altogether. Haven't got much into Under Night In-Birth, BlazBlue, or Arcana Heart to include them.

That's a ton of games.

Since I don't have enough time in life to try playing them more than surface level gameplay I sadly cannot make a massive list like this one.

I just say that I liked Skullgirls Encore for making me appreciate fighting games and Melty Blood for being my favourite all around even if I do appreciate SF Alpha 1-3 and Guilty Gear X/XX.

To be fair a handful are updates of prior games (Super, Plus) with sometimes minor changes or other times (Ultra SFIV for example) big changes like adding new characters etc. SF Alpha 1-3 and GG X/XX are timeless.

I don't know if we can properly treat different versions as different games but The World Warriors and Super Turbo/2 X are like night and day.

I'm sorry towards SFII fans and while I agree it changed fighting games for good I find The World Warriors to feel very archaic and like you're playing underwater (or on the moon).

I read that it was an illegal hacked version, Rainbow Edition, that made Capcom think about improving upon their own game but I don't know if it's an urban legend or an actual thing that happened.

I'm a massive noob but what are the main differences between Super IV, IV Arcade Edition and Ultra IV? I always felt like Super was the biggest change from vanilla SF IV.

Also Guilty Gear XX recycled a ton of sprites from GGX but I cannot blame Arcsys because those sprites were already a massive improvement over Guilty Gear The Missing Link and if SNK recycled the same sprites from KoF 1995 to KoF XI then GG doing so for the many years between X and XX Accent Core isn't a big deal.

I've emulated the Switch (for the first time) with Ultra Street Fighter II and oh my GOD why are the sprites so weird looking?

The game isn't pretty AT ALL!

It looks like a Flash game recreation of SFII without the charm.

If they wanted to upscale the game they should've added more key frames like SF Alpha or SFIII. Seeing upscaled while keeping the same animations it looks uncanny.
I do like the post-Super releases of SFII though

I believe we can, especially if they received a physical release (and not a digital update). That's a good example. I'm with you on the original SFII, whereas ST (Super Turbo) still holds up well.

4rd Arrange Edition hack of SFIII 3S is worth trying since they no only unlocked Gill (final boss) having him a playable character, but gave everybody a balance change and entirely new special and super attacks.

I skipped the original/vanilla version of SF IV and bought SSFIV (Super) around launch. The next 'edition/version/update' was AE which added Yun, Yang of 3S and Evil Ryu, Oni. Personally I enjoy this version the best since I like how they improved my main (Vega/Claw) by tweaking some of his normal attack properties like making his Cosmic Heel more safe on block. Ver.2012 also exists which did minor balance changes. Then Ultra having the option to have both Ultras set but compromising the overall damage output. Added red focus that absorbs more attacks. New characters Elena and Decapre. Added red focus that absorbs more attacks and a few other changes.

That game reminds me of the HD update they released on PS3/360 back then. I thought it looked like a Flash game too indeed missing its charm.

Maybe when a version adds more stuff but I often assume that when people talk about Street Fighter III they are talking about Third Strike (I've rarely seen people preferring The New Generation and 2nd Impact/Giant Attack).

I just find Super Turbo versy strict compared to the leniency of Alpha, III and IV (and the rest of the series) but it's good.

Is this a MAME hack? I should try it.

I've discovered SF IV with the 3DS port so I couldn't know about the vanilla game until I could emulate the Xbox 360.

Arcade Edition is a weird name when SF IV started on arcades... Maybe it's just a fancy way to say it has been re-released? Kinda like Championship Edition and then Turbo before SF II got Super.

I saw that in Versus and Training Mode they have "SSFIV 2012" in the character options which I wasn't aware of (maybe similar to SFII Super Turbo being an update to The New Challengers).

It's crazy how SFIV almost had as many updated versions as SFII in the 90's.

And look how small the roster was at launch on arcade!

At least there's the entire World Warriors cast + the Shadaloo Generals but ony four newcommers and no Alpha nor SFIII era characters makes it feel empty...

Good thing they've decided to bring some of the New Challengers (F for T.Hawk, he'll have to wait his turn) and Alpha cast (well technically Gen is a SF1 character but it's clearly his Alpha incarnation in this entry)

Well, I still ended up downloading Hyper Street Fighter II The Anniversary Edition and HD Remix on the PS2 and XBLA Respectively because I wanna try every versions of SFII (including the three on the SNES and that one GBA port).

any1 have a modded tekken 6 with better textures & AI?

I may try doing every versions of SFII (including the SNES and Genesis ports) once again from the World Warriors to The Final Challengers (8 separate main versions in total or 9 with Turbo Revival on the GBA):
  • Street Fighter II: The World Warrior
    • Street Fighter II' Champion Edition
    • Street Fighter II': Hyper Fighting (aka Street Fighter II' Turbo in Japan)
  • Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers
  • Super Street Fighter II Turbo (aka Super Street Fighter II X — Grand Master Challenge in Japan)
    • Super Street Fighter II Turbo Revival
  • Hyper Street Fighter II: The Anniversary Edition
  • Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
  • Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers

On the SNES there were three versions:
  • Street Fighter II: The World Warrior
  • Street Fighter II Turbo (which apparently combines both CE and Turbo's features)
  • Super Street Fighter II
The Genesis only got Street Fighter II': Special Champion Edition which thankfully got a romhack fixing some of its issues. Also known as Street Fighter II' Plus in Japan.

Played a bit of Ultra Street Fighter IV with this one and it was decent, I liked using the heavy punch and heavy kick with face buttons because I'm not really fan of using shoulder buttons for these:

It has a firm grip and the joysticks are fine with the corners. The D-pad could be a bit better and the face buttons are maybe a tiny bit small for my thumbs.

PS: Should I download Super Street Fighter IV for Xbox 360 emulators or Ultra is just Super with extra characters?

I have PS2 copies of soul calibur II, SF2 anniversary edition, tekken 4, tekken tag tournament so far. gonna be adding to them.

It was the first time I tried E.Honda and it was tricky.

I forgot how much harder the Arcade version was compared to the SNES one.

I still firmly believe that the SNES port (which was very competent and very close to the original release) enhanced the popularity of this game (even if it was revolutionary for the genre).

I almost wonder if the SNES itself got even more popular thanks to this multiplayer focused game.

I've played all three versions (and Alpha 2 SNES because why not?)

If I remember right the US version of the arcade game has the difficulty jacked up. Maybe give the Japanese one a try.

Oh, maybe I should try the Japanese rom indeed.

I need to find if on Final Burn Neo there's an option to access the operator menu because I feel like I could tweak things up a bit.

The arcade version was apparently made harder the SNES version is perfect.
I'm curious if The World Warriors would've been as successful/popular if the difficulty was on the same level as the Arcade.

And I'd be wondering another thing: if SFII never got a SNES port (or at least not until Super) would the franchise have gone as far as it is right now?

PS: Am I the only one having troubles when the Heavy Punch and Heavy Kick buttons are being mapped to R1/RB and R2/RT respectively?

I'm not a fighting games fanatic, but there were games that were really enjoyable to me, mainly Beat down : fists of vengeance, and Urban reign.

but as of late, tekken 8 is the only game I play with my sister and younger brother, playing feing as my main character, one of the greatest characters I had the pleasure of playing with, give him a try if you play tekken 8, he is really amazing

I made this list since some others in the threads have done the same. I'm going to call it ragebait so i don't get ripped apart for liking Jump Force.
genuinely im interested in the why more than the what for this. jump force has gotten its fair share of ridicule so id actually like to hear the things jump force does right for once.

I haven't played it in a while so my knowledge has gotten a little foggy, but I like the roster and movesets for all my favorite characters. The moves feel pretty impactful and the game was pretty easy to pick up as a lamb who didn't know how to play arena fighters (or fighters in general). The art style is very strange but I kind of like it for what it is, the characters look goofy but the maps look pretty nice (Though I wish characters like Dio were playable in daytime maps). I didn't touch the story much so I can't speak on it, but I liked being able to make my own character and customize them to my heart's content. I may not be super big on shonen content in general but it's fun to revisit time to time, same with Jump Ultimate Stars.

Greetings. I have never posted in this thread before, but I must ask.
Anyone like Ingrid, originally from the canceled Capcom Fighting All-Stars and later debuting in Capcom Fighting Jam/Evolution?
I'm a fan of Ingrid 🙌 looking forward to playing her in SF6.

She got a pretty design but she was really out of place in Alpha 3 Max...

Was Fighting Jam that bad btw?

I'm a fan of Ingrid 🙌 looking forward to playing her in SF6.
One of my most wanted character in SF VI is him:

I know that The World Warriors (and The New Challengers) cast is still the most iconic but let's not forget about the franchise's (very) humble roots. At least we got Birdie, Gen and Adon in Alpha then IV/V afterwards but still...
